What Video Formats Work Best for a YouTube 24/7 Stream?

For a reliable 24/7 YouTube stream, match a supported codec and live bitrate to what your encoder and internet connection can sustain.

For a YouTube 24/7 live stream, choose a supported video codec your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a resolution and bitrate matched to your stable upload capacity. The best preset is the reliable one—not automatically the highest resolution or frame rate.

Recommended YouTube live-stream settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingest. These are encoder-to-YouTube settings; they are not the same as settings for a video file you upload.

Setting Recommendation
Ingest protocol Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; RTMPS encrypts transport into and through Google’s servers.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. Choose a codec supported by your encoder and workflow; YouTube does not designate one as universally best.
Bitrate mode Constant bitrate (CBR).
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps. Use a rate your source and encoder can sustain; for a mostly static scene, higher frame rates may add little visible benefit.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit.
HDR color H.265/HEVC, 10-bit. YouTube’s guidance does not support AV1 for HDR ingest.

Choose resolution and bitrate together

The following are YouTube’s recommended live ingest video bitrates in Mbps, not upload-file recommendations. The rates vary by codec and resolution.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or uninterrupted streaming. Pick the highest setting that your encoder and connection can sustain with room to spare. YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom; a connection that only barely reaches the target leaves little margin for fluctuations. See YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance for current details.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. If you need to choose a resolution manually, its guidance says to use custom stream-key settings.

Set audio for the stream

  • Stereo: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for live ingest and recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate at 128 Kbps.
  • 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS: AAC is required; YouTube recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.

Check that audio is present and balanced in a test stream; a technically valid video preset does not prevent a muted, distorted, or mismatched audio feed.

Plan for continuous operation

A 24/7 stream has to withstand long periods of encoder and network operation. YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a live stream. Test sustained upstream capacity rather than relying on a brief speed test, and avoid choosing a bitrate that consumes all available upload bandwidth.

  • Test before going live with audio and motion similar to the real program, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs.
  • Use a wired Ethernet connection if both the encoder and router support it. A Cat6 cable may suit compatible equipment, but a cable cannot guarantee uptime.
  • Decide on latency based on the viewing experience you need. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering; if viewers do not need real-time interaction, low latency may be less important.
  • Enable DVR if you want viewers to be able to pause and rewind the live stream.

Latency and DVR are playback choices, not video-format settings. YouTube’s separate latency guidance explains the trade-offs.

Live ingest is not the same as uploading a video file

For uploaded files, YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, and variable bitrate among other file settings. Those recommendations are for videos sent to YouTube as uploads. Do not copy them into a live encoder preset: YouTube’s live guidance specifies CBR and separate live bitrate targets. Compare the upload encoding recommendations with the live encoder recommendations for the workflow you are setting up.

Let YouTube handle viewer playback formats

You do not need to prepare a separate live ingest for every screen or connection your viewers use. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for playback across devices and networks. Your job is to send a stable, supported feed; YouTube creates the different playback versions.

Troubleshoot common live-stream problems

Symptom What to check Practical fix
Stream drops or loses connection Available upload bandwidth, network interruptions, and whether the encoder remains running. Lower resolution or bitrate to a stable level, preserve the recommended bandwidth headroom, and test the connection over time.
Unstable playback or buffering Whether the total stream bitrate exceeds what the connection can reliably upload; whether very low latency is necessary. Reduce the ingest bitrate if needed and reconsider low-latency delivery when live audience interaction is not required.
Resolution does not match the preset Whether YouTube is automatically detecting encoder settings or a custom stream key is configured. Use custom stream-key settings if you need to select resolution manually; otherwise verify the encoder output.
Video looks poor despite a high resolution Whether the selected codec, bitrate, and frame rate are sustainable together. Choose a lower stable setting rather than pushing a bitrate the connection cannot maintain; check stream health and test representative motion.
Video works but audio is absent or wrong Encoder audio output, selected codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate. Confirm audio is enabled and use YouTube’s stereo or 5.1 recommendations as appropriate; test before the full stream.
HDR ingest is not behaving as expected Whether the feed uses H.265/HEVC and 10-bit output. For HDR, follow YouTube’s H.265/HEVC and 10-bit guidance; AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest in that guidance.

Run a 24/7 YouTube stream without keeping a computer on

If you want to operate the encoder and network yourself, use the settings and reliability checks above. For a cloud-hosted alternative, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, rather than broadcasting from a camera:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. One slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage pooled across your active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. Plans offer the same product; only the billing length changes. Read more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
