To run a 24/7 YouTube stream with videos separated by a still image, send YouTube a continuous feed from an encoder. In OBS, you can loop a VLC playlist and add an Image source above it—but the documented controls do not automatically insert that image between every playlist item. For unattended transitions, render each video and its still-image interval into one continuous sequence, or use a tested automation workflow. The local OBS method also requires the computer and internet connection to stay available.
What you need to decide first
- How the still will appear: OBS documents a looping playlist and a separate image source, but not a built-in setting to show the image for a set time between every playlist item. For unattended playback, prepare the intervals in your media or verify an automation workflow before going live.
- Where the encoder runs: With OBS on a local computer, that computer and its connection must remain available. A cloud service is an alternative if you do not want a host running at home.
- What happens to the archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single 24/7 broadcast will be saved in full as one video.
- Whether you have streaming rights: Use only videos and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast. Having a copy of a video does not establish permission to rebroadcast it.
Set up the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create an encoder stream, or choose Manage → Schedule stream if you want a scheduled watch page. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. The key is the connection credential: keep it private and do not show it in screenshots or on a public page. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the Live Control Room open for the test and monitor stream health after connecting.
Build a looping video playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and add the video files in the order you want them to play. OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Turn Shuffle Playlist off if order matters, then enable Loop Playlist so playback repeats when it reaches the end. See the OBS media sources guide.
- Check that each file plays with the intended audio and picture before relying on the playlist for a long broadcast. Confirm that the playlist order is correct and that the loop returns to the first item as expected.
Add the static image and handle transitions
- Add an Image source in OBS and select the still image. Common supported formats include PNG, JPEG/JPG, BMP, TGA and GIF. OBS describes image sources in its image source guide.
- Place the Image source above the VLC source in the Sources list if it should cover the video. Source order controls what appears on top. Resize and position the image to fit the output canvas; use the preview to check for unwanted borders or cropping.
- For a still between every video without operator input, render the desired still-image interval into the media sequence—for example, video 1, still, video 2, still—and add that resulting sequence to the playlist. Alternatively, use an automation method you have verified for your exact OBS setup. The documented image and playlist controls do not establish an automatic “insert a still after each playlist item” feature.
- If you plan to toggle the image source manually, test the timing and operation with a person present. Manual toggling is not an unattended transition method.
Choose settings for a stable YouTube feed
Use settings your upload connection can sustain, and test with representative motion and audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). For H.264, its current settings guidance lists these selected 30-fps recommendations:

These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer quality. Leave upload headroom beyond the selected video bitrate for other network use and variation, run an upload speed test, and monitor stream health. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for playback on different devices. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current recommendations.
Test before leaving it live
- Start the OBS output and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room.
- Run a private or unlisted test using media with similar motion and audio to the planned stream. Check video, sound, playlist order, loop behavior and the still-image transitions.
- Watch stream health and dropped frames. If the feed is unstable, reduce the output demands to settings your connection can sustain and test again.
- Only leave a local setup unattended after you have confirmed its operation and arranged for the computer and network connection to remain available.
Plan for copyright, monetization and archives
Rights and platform rules
Only broadcast material you own or are licensed to use for a live stream, including music, footage and images. Replaying a video already published on your channel does not, by itself, prove you have the necessary rights for this use. Copyright claims and YouTube’s repetitive-content or monetization rules depend on the content and channel; check the policies applicable to your specific material rather than assuming a loop is exempt.

Saving a long broadcast
YouTube Help states: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder. All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Because a continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, do not rely on YouTube to provide one complete archive. If a recording matters, plan to capture or segment it independently and check YouTube’s current behavior before the broadcast.
Local OBS or a cloud encoder?
OBS is a no-charge software route, but the computer running it and its internet connection have to stay available. YouTube’s verified encoders page lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuously streaming prerecorded video; YouTube notes that verified encoders are third-party products, not made by YouTube. A listing is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

When evaluating any cloud option, check whether it supports the playlist order and looping you need, how it handles reconnects, what quality and storage limits apply, whether it can create your still-image intervals, and what its current pricing and account-security arrangements are. Verify the transition behavior specifically; the ability to loop videos does not necessarily mean a service can insert your still automatically.
