They solve different jobs, and none guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: the computer, power, network, encoder, media, and YouTube connection still have to keep working.
Which OBS plugin or feature should you use?
| Need | Best-supported fit | What it does | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automate scheduled or conditional scene and media actions | Advanced Scene Switcher | Build macros from conditions and actions, including date/time, media, file, streaming, and scene controls. | The OBS forum listing states a minimum OBS version of 31.1.1 for version 1.36.1. Check the installer and compatibility for your operating system before installing; a plugin automates OBS but does not establish 24/7 reliability. OBS forum resource listing |
| Loop or shuffle a set of video files | OBS VLC Video source | Use multiple media items in a playlist and enable loop or shuffle. | Install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This is an OBS source, not a separate automation plugin. OBS media sources guide |
| Control scenes and sources remotely | OBS WebSocket | Lets compatible external tools control OBS scenes and sources. | WebSocket is built into OBS 28 and later. Protect access with a password; remote control does not itself schedule a stream or keep the host computer online. OBS Remote Control Guide |
| Send the broadcast to YouTube | OBS encoder setup and YouTube Live Control Room | Connect OBS using YouTube’s stream URL and key, or use YouTube integration if offered; schedule the broadcast in YouTube when you want to promote it in advance. | Scheduling and OBS automation are separate tasks. YouTube’s setup guidance does not promise unattended continuity. YouTube encoder setup |
Set up a looping OBS broadcast
1. Check YouTube Live access
Enable live streaming for the channel before configuring an event. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day the broadcast is meant to begin. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then use its stream settings to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection flow.
2. Add and test the playlist
- Install VLC and make sure it matches OBS’s architecture.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the media files to its playlist, then set loop and, if wanted, shuffle. Check the source in the preview and confirm that the files play with their intended audio.
- Test the full playlist, transitions, and audio before relying on it unattended. Confirm that the files remain available at their configured locations.
For a single file or a manually controlled source, other OBS media sources may be more suitable; the VLC source is the documented fit for a multi-item playlist.
3. Add scene automation only where needed
Install Advanced Scene Switcher only after confirming its current OBS minimum version, operating-system installer, and compatibility. In the plugin, create macros by pairing the condition that should trigger an event—such as a time, media, file, or streaming condition—with an action such as changing a scene. Test each macro in a controlled session. Back up OBS and plugin settings before upgrading; the plugin’s update notes advise doing so. Check the current listing and release notes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume a macro that changes scenes will restart a failed broadcast or recover a disconnected encoder. The reviewed documentation supports automation of OBS actions, not a validated unattended recovery configuration.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube and test the encoder
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube if the integration is available, or select a custom service and enter the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube.
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the stream you plan to deliver. There is no one bitrate or resolution that is right for every stream: follow YouTube’s current settings guidance and confirm that your upload connection can sustain the chosen output.
- Prefer RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast and check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not a static screen alone. Monitor the stream for dropped frames, audio problems, and connection warnings before leaving it unattended.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream health guidance for current recommendations. Those settings can change; use the guidance applicable to your encoder and connection rather than copying a universal preset.

What each automation option cannot do
Advanced Scene Switcher
It is the clearest choice here for condition-and-action workflows inside OBS, such as switching scenes on a schedule or when a media condition changes. Its forum listing showed version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, with OBS 31.1.1 as the minimum supported version. Treat those as listing details checked October 3, 2026, not a guarantee that the same version or compatibility will remain current. The OBS developer guidance also cautions that plugins may need recompilation for later OBS versions. Plugin listing · OBS developer guide
VLC Video source
It handles playlist playback, loop, and shuffle. It does not provide a cloud host: OBS still has to run on a computer with access to the files and an active connection.

WebSocket
OBS has included WebSocket since version 28, so most current users do not need a separate download. Older versions may require a legacy installation. Since it allows remote control, use authentication and a password, and do not expose an unprotected control interface.
Plan for interruptions, copyright, and archives
Reliability requires more than a plugin
A 24/7 OBS setup depends on the computer staying on, power and internet remaining available, the media continuing to play, OBS continuing to encode, and YouTube continuing to receive the stream. The cited official plugin and platform pages do not publish comparative 24/7 uptime results for OBS plugins. Plan to monitor stream health and decide how you will respond to a stopped source, software crash, power cut, or network outage; a scene macro alone is not evidence of automatic recovery.

Use material you have rights to stream
Automation does not change YouTube’s copyright rules. Before looping documentaries, music, or other recordings, make sure you have permission to broadcast and reuse every video and audio element. A public stream is not made safe by crediting the owner or by using a short excerpt. Review YouTube’s current policies and the rights attached to your material before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
Do not assume a long broadcast will be archived
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its stated guidance does not establish archive behavior for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or more, so do not rely on a multi-day stream as your only recording. Keep a separate recording or other backup if preserving the full program matters. YouTube encoder setup and archive guidance

Troubleshooting common OBS 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC source is missing or will not load | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install the VLC build matching OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and test the source. |
| The playlist stops after one file | Loop is disabled or the source playlist is not configured as intended. | Check the VLC Video source playlist and enable loop; test the end of one item and transition into the next. |
| Advanced Scene Switcher does not install or behave as expected | OBS version, operating system, or plugin build may not match. | Verify the current resource listing’s minimum OBS version and OS installer. Back up settings before an update and retest macros after changing OBS or the plugin. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Live access may not be enabled, or the URL/key or encoder connection may be wrong. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement; check the current event’s stream settings, OBS service configuration, and YouTube Live Control Room messages. |
| Stream health warnings or dropped frames | The output settings may exceed the available upload connection, or the connection may be unstable. | Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance, verify upload capacity, test representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health. |
| Broadcast stops while the scene automation still runs | A macro can control OBS actions, but the host, power, network, encoder, or ingest may have failed. | Check OBS and YouTube status, the machine and connection, then restart or recover according to a plan you have tested. Do not assume a plugin provides guaranteed 24/7 recovery. |
