For a temporary interruption, restart the encoder’s output and restore the feed to the scheduled event; do not click End Stream unless the broadcast is actually finished. YouTube’s help explains how to start and end a scheduled encoder stream, but does not guarantee that an event explicitly ended in Live Control Room can be reopened on the same watch page.
Stop the feed without ending the scheduled event
A scheduled YouTube broadcast has two parts: the event managed in Live Control Room and the encoder that sends video and audio to it using the event’s stream URL and key. Stopping or restarting encoder output is not the same as explicitly ending the YouTube broadcast.
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live, open Manage, and select the scheduled stream. Confirm you have the correct event before changing or restarting anything. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions describe this workflow.
- In your encoder, use the stream URL and stream key associated with that event. If you are unsure which key is current, retrieve it in Live Control Room rather than relying on an old saved value.
- Start or restart the encoder’s output. For a scheduled stream, wait for the feed preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live if YouTube presents that control. Check the watch page and verify both picture and sound. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event and setting it up at least 2 hours in advance.
- If the feed is temporarily interrupted, restore encoder output and confirm YouTube is receiving it. Avoid End Stream if you intend to continue the same broadcast.
YouTube’s public instructions do not spell out every reconnect state or guarantee recovery after every interruption. If the controls or event status differ from these steps, follow the status shown in your current Live Control Room.
Check Auto-start and Auto-stop before reconnecting
Auto-start and Auto-stop change which actions can be initiated from the encoder. YouTube says that when both are enabled, a creator can start or stop streaming from the encoder; saved stream settings may also carry these toggles into another event. Check the scheduled stream’s actual settings instead of assuming they are enabled or disabled. YouTube’s help does not fully define reconnect behavior for every toggle combination. Review YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

End the broadcast only when it is finished
When you are done broadcasting, YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow says to click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. Its general tips say to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Follow YouTube’s end-of-event guidance.
If you have already clicked End Stream, check the stream’s status in YouTube Studio’s Live tab and Live Control Room. YouTube’s public help does not clearly guarantee that an explicitly ended event can be reopened on its original watch page. If the event is complete and you need another broadcast, create or schedule a new stream and share its appropriate link.

Fix an encoder that will not reconnect
- Verify the event and stream URL. Make sure the encoder is configured for the scheduled event you intend to resume, not a different stream.
- Check the stream key. Retrieve the key from Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder. If you reset the key, update the encoder’s saved value; the old key will no longer be the one to use. See YouTube’s stream-key settings help and encoder troubleshooting steps.
- Check the connection type. YouTube offers RTMPS, an encrypted option. If your encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room; a regular RTMP address and an RTMPS address are not interchangeable. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
- Wait for the preview. Once the encoder is sending again, confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed before using Go live where that control is required.
Protect the recording of a 24/7 stream
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete archive of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee for every stream. If the recording matters, test a local recording path, confirm the file keeps growing during a stream, and check available storage. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
