Set up channel memberships in YouTube Studio on a computer: go to Earn > Memberships, edit the levels and perks, then submit them for review. You can create up to six levels, with one to five perks per level; higher-priced levels include the perks from lower levels. For a 24/7 channel, decide whether a perk means members can chat on a public stream or can watch a separate members-only stream—those are different benefits.

Check that your channel is eligible
Membership availability depends on the channel’s account and location, as well as YouTube’s current eligibility requirements and policies. Check the current requirements in YouTube Studio and YouTube Help’s membership instructions before planning a launch; a 24/7 stream by itself does not establish eligibility.
Design perks around a sustainable workload
Start with what your documentary audience values, then consider how much time and effort each perk will take to deliver. YouTube’s channel memberships tips recommend planning around viewer motivations and the work involved. A perk attached to a continuously running stream should be clear and manageable: avoid promising unlimited personal replies or attention unless you can reliably provide them.
How to add levels and perks in YouTube Studio
- Open the membership editor. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio, select Earn in the left menu, then choose Memberships.
- Edit the levels and perks. In the membership setup card, select Edit for adding levels and perks. Follow the editor to create each level and set its price.
- Build a tier ladder. YouTube allows up to six levels, each with one to five perks. Higher-priced levels inherit all perks from lower levels, so make the additional benefit at each step explicit. YouTube does not prescribe a universal number of levels or a standard price; choose an arrangement your audience understands and you can sustain.
- Add the perks for each level. Possible benefits include badges, emoji, members-only posts or videos, early access, members-only chat on a public live stream, and members-only live streams. Use the available options shown for your channel and region.
- Review every promise and submit. Check that each perk is accurate, permitted, and deliverable, then publish or submit the levels in Studio. YouTube reviews levels and perks against its policies before they go live; its current help instructions say review takes about a day, though timing can change. YouTube says creators are responsible for delivering offered perks to members’ satisfaction and that YouTube does not take responsibility for creator perks.
Choose the right live-stream benefit

These settings are not interchangeable. If your goal is to keep a public documentary stream available to everyone while reserving chat for members, choose members-only chat. If the video itself should be restricted, configure a members-only stream and confirm which levels are eligible.

Perk ideas for documentary channels with continuous streams
- Entry level: consider badges, emoji, or members-only posts that recognize supporters without adding a substantial recurring production task.
- Middle level: consider members-only chat on the public stream or early access to a planned video, provided you can manage the access and communicate when content becomes public.
- Higher level: consider an occasional members-only stream or event as an additional benefit, not as a replacement for lower-tier perks. Set a cadence you can keep.
These are examples, not YouTube requirements. YouTube lists the available perk types, but the right mix depends on your audience and delivery capacity. For early-access videos, YouTube reports that videos first offered to members and later made public performed the same on average as public-only videos in its comparison of channels that published at least one of each between January and February 2023. That result applies to the compared channels and video format; it does not establish the same outcome for every channel or for 24/7 streams.
Review levels after launch—and before removing one
Use the membership information in Studio to monitor which levels have the most members, along with acquisition and retention data. YouTube recommends using these indicators to assess how the program is working. If you change a live tier, first review the current instructions: removing a level immediately removes access for its existing members and refunds their last month’s payment.
