Compare the two streams’ Estimated ad revenue in YouTube Studio Analytics over the same dates and with the same live-versus-replay scope. If they were available for different numbers of hours, report both their totals and your own calculation of ad revenue per stream-hour. Keep the figures labeled as estimates until YouTube’s adjustments have settled.
Use the metric that answers the question
For an ad-earnings comparison, use Estimated ad revenue, not the broader Estimated revenue. YouTube’s Estimated revenue can include YouTube Premium, memberships, and Super Chat as well as advertising. The distinction matters if one stream has more revenue from non-ad sources. YouTube’s metric definitions explain what each figure includes.
Do not estimate a creator’s take-home earnings by multiplying public views by CPM. CPM describes advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions; playback-based CPM describes advertiser cost per 1,000 playbacks that included an ad. Neither is the creator’s received revenue. RPM is a creator-facing revenue-per-1,000-views metric after revenue share, but it may include Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers, so it is not a substitute for Estimated ad revenue when you want ad earnings specifically.
Compare the streams in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio Analytics. Use the Revenue tab to view earnings at the channel or video level, or use Advanced Mode for a more controlled comparison. Advanced Mode supports comparisons across videos, groups, and periods, metric selection, and report export. See YouTube’s Advanced Mode guidance and its Analytics overview.
- Set the same date range. Select matching start and end dates for both streams. Record the dates and, if it affects how you interpret the boundary, the time zone. Do not compare one stream’s lifetime figure with another’s shorter period.
- Select the same content scope. Compare the two videos, or equivalent groups if you are comparing multiple streams. Decide whether your question concerns live broadcasts, replays, or both, and apply that scope consistently.
- Choose Estimated ad revenue. Add views, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions, and watch time where available. These help explain the result, but they are not interchangeable with ad revenue.
- Export and preserve the comparison. Export the report from Advanced Mode if you need to check calculations, share the comparison, or rerun it later. Keep the selected dates, scope, and estimate status with the exported figures.
Report both totals and a time-normalized figure
The total answers which stream generated more Estimated ad revenue in the chosen period. But if one stream was available for longer, the totals alone do not show how much each generated per hour it could be watched.

For each stream, calculate Estimated ad revenue ÷ hours available. Label the result “ad revenue per stream-hour.” This is an analytical normalization you calculate; it is not a standard metric YouTube names or publishes. Define “hours available” consistently—for example, count the hours each stream was live during the selected dates, and say whether replay availability is included. Keep the total beside the per-hour result: the rate gives context, while the total shows the actual revenue for that period.
- Absolute ad revenue: Which stream generated more Estimated ad revenue over the matched period?
- Ad revenue per stream-hour: How do the totals compare after accounting for different hours available?
- Ad delivery context: Do views, estimated monetized playbacks, and ad impressions help explain a difference?
- Scope and estimate status: Were live and replay activity treated the same way, and are both figures at a comparable stage of adjustment?
Interpret views and ad delivery carefully
A view does not necessarily mean an ad was shown. YouTube distinguishes views from estimated monetized playbacks—video playbacks with at least one ad impression—and from ad impressions, which count individual ads. A playback may have multiple ad impressions. Ads may not appear for many reasons, including ad settings, advertiser suitability, ad availability, audience, geography, and other ad-serving factors.

Live monetization can include pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads when enabled, but YouTube states that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Its live-stream guidance also documents a Live filter for breaking out ad revenue from live streams and live replays. Use that breakdown if the comparison needs to distinguish the live broadcast from replay viewing. YouTube says embedded live streams with autoplay on an external site have ads turned off, a relevant caveat if streams have been embedded elsewhere.
Account for estimates and later adjustments
Estimated revenue can change. YouTube says adjustments can result from invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, and certain ad campaign types. It describes adjustments after one week and in the middle of the following month, when earnings are finalized. For a fair comparison, state that recent figures are estimates and compare streams at a similar stage of adjustment. When a more settled result matters, rerun the same comparison after the adjustment period.

YouTube says finalized earnings appear in Analytics after payments are added to AdSense for YouTube, typically between the 7th and 12th day of the following month. The timing and possible adjustments are described in YouTube’s estimated revenue guidance; the Analytics overview also explains earnings reporting.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using CPM as creator earnings: CPM is an advertiser-cost measure, not the amount the creator receives. Use Estimated ad revenue for the ad-earnings comparison.
- Using RPM instead of ad revenue: RPM can include non-ad revenue sources. It can add context about overall creator revenue per view, but it does not isolate ads.
- Comparing unmatched dates or scopes: Different time windows, or live-only data against live-plus-replay data, can make a comparison misleading. Match both.
- Treating views as ad views: Views, monetized playbacks, and individual ad impressions count different things. Include the latter metrics as context rather than assuming every view carried an ad.
- Calling a recent estimate final: YouTube may adjust revenue after the initial estimate. Label it and compare periods with similar maturity.
- Inferring another creator’s earnings from public data: Public views and CPM do not establish a channel’s actual ad revenue. Use the owner’s YouTube Studio Analytics for a factual comparison.
