A player being publicly available is not permission. Once rights are cleared, choose desktop or application audio capture, test the mix in an unlisted stream, and keep monitoring it.
Get permission before capturing the audio
Ask the station and any relevant rights holders for permission that specifically covers livestreaming the programming to YouTube and the territories where it will be available. Ask separately whether the permission covers an archived replay, if you plan to leave the stream recording available. A station’s website player being open to listeners does not grant these rights.
YouTube requires stream providers to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Its livestream terms and conditions describe that responsibility. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches and can interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects protected content. If you have a license, ask the rights holder to allowlist your YouTube channel; a license alone may not prevent an interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Choose how OBS will capture the player
Open the station’s player on the computer running OBS, start playback, and choose the capture route that fits your system. Capturing all desktop output is straightforward, but it can also send notifications and other computer sounds to the stream. Capturing only the browser or application can keep unrelated audio out.

| System and route | What to know |
|---|---|
| macOS 13 (Ventura) or later with OBS 30 or later | OBS’s macOS Audio Capture source can capture all desktop audio or a single application. See the OBS macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide. |
| Older macOS setups | Additional audio-routing software may be needed. Check OBS’s current guide for the applicable setup rather than assuming the newer native source is available. |
| Windows | OBS can capture selected input or output devices. Its Audio Sources guide explains device capture and source configuration. |
| Linux | The cited OBS guidance does not establish a complete current Linux procedure. Consult current OBS and distribution guidance for your audio system. |
Set up and test the audio in OBS
- Open the station player. Use a stable browser session on the streaming computer and start the station’s audio. If you capture all desktop output, silence notifications and close anything likely to play unrelated sounds.
- Check OBS’s existing audio sources. The OBS Quick Start Guide says desktop audio and microphone capture are enabled by default in the initial setup, and you can select devices manually. Confirm which source is picking up the player before adding another.
- Add or select the appropriate capture source. On supported macOS versions, use macOS Audio Capture for desktop output or the specific browser application. On Windows or macOS, OBS’s Audio Sources guidance covers adding a chosen device to a scene.
- Prevent duplicate capture. If you add a device capture source directly to a scene, disable that same device as a global source. Capturing the same device both ways can create echo.
- Run an unlisted test. Confirm that the OBS audio meter moves when the station plays, the source is not muted, and the mix sounds right. Check the YouTube preview and verify that the test stream is accessible before going public. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality in its live streaming tips.
- Monitor the live stream. Keep checking the audio and YouTube preview once live. If YouTube shows a copyright warning or replaces the video with a placeholder, treat it as a rights issue rather than trying to bypass the notice.
Will YouTube flag the radio audio?
It may. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. A detected match can trigger a warning and placeholder image; if the protected audio continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Licensed audio can still be interrupted if the owner has not allowlisted the channel.
“Free” or publicly accessible does not establish that music is safe to rebroadcast. YouTube describes copyright-safe music as public-domain material or material used with permission from the copyright owner; claims can still arise. Read its tips for finding safe music.

Creator Music is not a livestream workaround
YouTube’s Creator Music guidance says its tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams. YouTube’s rights-holder guidance says paid Creator Music licenses were deprecated starting August 10, 2026, with gratis-license offerings as the focus. The page describes availability for U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Check current terms and availability in YouTube Studio before relying on Creator Music; it does not clear radio audio for a livestream. See YouTube’s Creator Music licensing guidance.
Troubleshoot common audio problems
- The OBS meter does not move: Confirm the station is playing, the intended desktop, application, or device source is selected, and the source is not muted. Recheck the source and device selection in OBS.
- The stream has echo: Check whether the same output device is captured as both a global source and a scene source. Disable one capture route.
- Notifications or other sounds reach the stream: You are likely capturing all desktop output. Use application capture where supported, or silence notifications and other applications during the broadcast.
- You can hear the station locally, but it is missing from the stream: Local playback does not confirm that OBS is capturing it. Check the OBS meter and the YouTube preview during an unlisted test.
- YouTube displays a copyright warning or interrupts the stream: Stop retransmitting the material unless you have the necessary rights. If you do have permission, contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel; do not assume a license will prevent automated interruption by itself.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you have permission to stream the audio, StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live radio website player, and it streams to YouTube only.
