Yes—but not by pointing YouTube directly at an Icecast mountpoint. YouTube Live accepts AAC audio when it arrives through a compatible encoder using YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS or HLS ingest workflow. Icecast’s FAQ says AAC may work but is not officially supported, so the exact mountpoint format and bridge encoder must be tested before you rely on them.
Why an Icecast AAC URL is not a YouTube ingest URL
Icecast and YouTube fill different roles. An audio source sends a stream to an Icecast server at a mountpoint, and listeners connect to that mountpoint. YouTube’s documented live workflows instead have an encoder send a stream to YouTube over RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. YouTube accepting AAC as an audio codec does not make an Icecast listener URL a valid YouTube ingest endpoint. Icecast’s Basic Setup documentation describes the source, server, and listener roles; YouTube’s encoder settings describe its live ingest path.
The practical arrangement is a bridge: it consumes the Icecast mount and outputs a complete stream in a format and protocol YouTube accepts. This is a workflow inference from the two systems’ documented roles, not a documented direct Icecast-to-YouTube connection or a guaranteed recipe for every AAC mount.
What YouTube and Icecast document about AAC
RTMP/RTMPS ingest
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; those are recommendations, not universal requirements. Its guidance also recommends testing with similar audio and video before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HLS ingest
YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as HLS audio codecs. HLS output must use TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a stream key configured for HLS. Because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream, it has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube’s HLS guidance also recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 kbps. See Set up an HLS stream.
Icecast AAC support
Icecast’s FAQ treats AAC as a format that might work, but is not officially supported. Compatibility can depend on the Icecast version, source client, AAC framing, and the receiving encoder. Do not treat an arbitrary AAC mountpoint as guaranteed to play correctly through a bridge. See the Icecast project FAQ.

How to bridge an Icecast mountpoint to YouTube Live
- Confirm the source stream. Play the Icecast mountpoint in a client and identify its actual stream type, content type, and AAC framing. A mount that plays in a browser or media player is not necessarily ingestible by your encoder.
- Choose a compatible bridge. Configure an encoder or transcoding bridge to consume that particular mount and produce a YouTube-facing stream. If the encoder cannot ingest it, add a compatible audio capture or transcoding step. Do not assume that a plain Icecast URL is accepted just because it is playable elsewhere.
- Set the YouTube ingest path. In YouTube Live Control Room, choose the protocol the encoder will use, then copy the provided stream URL and key into that encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains this URL-and-key setup at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Match audio settings to the selected output. For a conventional stereo RTMP/RTMPS stream, YouTube recommends AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use the corresponding HLS audio recommendation if you choose HLS, and ensure the encoder also meets HLS packaging requirements.
- Test the full chain before broadcasting. Start the bridge, inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health, and check audio continuity, sync, and metadata behavior using the exact source and encoder configuration. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its guidance does not provide an Icecast-specific validation procedure.
Choosing RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
| Path | Audio codecs documented by YouTube | Output requirements | Latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | Encoder sends to YouTube using the configured stream URL and key; YouTube recommends stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. | Continuous-stream path; lower latency than HLS. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | TS segments 1–4 seconds; rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; HTTPS POST/PUT; stream key configured for HLS. YouTube recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. | Higher than RTMP because HLS sends segments. |
Neither path removes the need for a bridge between the listener-facing Icecast mount and YouTube’s encoder-facing ingest. Icecast’s relay feature mirrors streams between Icecast servers; its documentation does not define a relay that turns an Icecast stream into YouTube ingest. See Icecast relaying.
What to check if the stream fails
- The bridge cannot open the mount: verify the mountpoint URL and access details, then confirm that the encoder can ingest the actual stream type and AAC framing. Add a compatible capture or transcoding step if necessary.
- YouTube does not receive a valid stream: check that the encoder is sending to the YouTube stream URL with the matching key and selected protocol, rather than sending to the Icecast server.
- HLS output is rejected or delayed: verify TS segment duration, playlist size, HTTPS POST/PUT, and that the key is configured for HLS. Expect more latency than RTMP.
- Audio is silent, broken, or intermittent: test the same mount and bridge together, checking codec handling and AAC framing. Icecast does not officially support AAC, so playback in one client does not establish compatibility in another.
- Audio is out of sync or metadata behaves unexpectedly: verify those properties in YouTube’s preview during an end-to-end test; the reviewed setup guidance does not specify Icecast-specific sync or metadata behavior.
Keep a YouTube radio stream running without a home computer
If the aim is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings rather than relay a live Icecast mount, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not take a live camera feed or replace the Icecast-to-YouTube bridge described above.
