Use a spare PC as a dedicated streaming computer: install OBS Studio, add your gameplay and audio sources, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, choose a quality the PC and internet connection can sustain, then test and monitor the broadcast. This works best for live gameplay or another live source. If you want prerecorded gameplay to loop continuously instead, that is a different workflow and may be easier to run from the cloud.
Before you set up the spare PC
“Always-on” does not mean a stream can keep showing live gameplay after the game or video source stops. A live gameplay feed depends on the game and capture setup continuing to produce video, and OBS and the PC continuing to run.
- Live gameplay: OBS captures a game running on the PC, or receives a feed from another device, and sends it to YouTube.
- Continuous prerecorded playback: a video or playlist plays as a live stream. This is not live gameplay, and you need to consider whether you have the rights to use the footage and how YouTube will handle the archive.
YouTube describes encoder-based streaming as a way to send gameplay and overlays, and also identifies cloud services as an option for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide explains the distinction.
Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming
- Verify your YouTube channel if it is not already verified.
- Check that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days.
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start time.
These are YouTube’s stated eligibility conditions; check YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions for the current account workflow.

Set up OBS on the spare PC
- Install OBS Studio from the official OBS site and open it on the computer that will run the stream.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for streaming and follow its prompts. OBS says the wizard takes intended use, hardware, and network conditions into account; its suggested settings are a starting point, not a guarantee that the PC can hold that quality indefinitely.
- Add the video source. For a game running on the same PC, add a game capture source and select the game. If that is not suitable, try window capture or display capture. For gameplay from a separate console or computer, you need a way to bring that device’s video into OBS; a capture card is relevant only in that case.
- Add audio sources. Select the intended desktop or game audio and microphone sources. Speak or play a short sample and confirm the right meters move in OBS. Check for muted sources and avoid sending duplicate audio through more than one route.
- Arrange and inspect the scene. Confirm the game fills the canvas as intended, overlays are visible, and no private desktop notifications or unrelated windows will appear.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream you want to run.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream connection details. Depending on the OBS workflow available to you, you may connect an account or use the stream key.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as the password and address used by the encoder to send the stream. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Use RTMPS when available. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers stream keys and connection settings.

Choose an output your PC and connection can sustain
There is no single safe bitrate or resolution for every spare PC. The practical limit depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and upload connection. A machine that can run a game smoothly may still lack headroom to render and encode it at the same time. OBS notes that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee a particular streaming quality.
- Start with the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard recommendation. Then select an output resolution and frame rate appropriate to the game and hardware rather than assuming the highest available setting will work.
- Check YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and video codec, then test the connection’s upload capacity. Set the bitrate below what the connection can reliably sustain, leaving headroom for normal variation.
- Set the keyframe interval and encoder options to match YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec. YouTube’s settings can change; consult its current live encoder settings instead of copying an old preset.
- Watch PC load during a real test. If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, reduce the game’s graphics load or frame rate, simplify scenes, or lower the stream resolution or frame rate. A suitable hardware encoder can reduce CPU work, though older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality.
OBS’s streaming guidance and performance information explain why results depend on the actual encoder and workload. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start a short test stream and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators.
- Watch the stream’s public or unlisted watch page from another device or browser. Confirm viewers can access it and that the video and audio are correct.
- Check motion, sync, volume, overlays, and whether the game remains smooth while OBS encodes.
- If you need a local copy, start a separate OBS recording and confirm the file is being created and growing. Do not rely on YouTube as the only archive for a long broadcast.
- Test your response to a brief network interruption or encoder stop when practical, and decide how you will notice a failure. A spare PC and OBS do not establish automatic recovery from every crash, power loss, restart, or internet interruption.

Keeping the local setup running
A dedicated PC makes it easier to keep the streaming workload separate from everyday use, but continuity still depends on the whole chain: power, internet, operating system, OBS, the game or source, and YouTube’s ingest connection. Plan who or what will detect a stopped stream and how it will be restarted. Operating-system sleep, update, restart, and automatic-relaunch settings vary, so verify them for your particular OS rather than assuming OBS alone will keep the computer awake.

A desktop UPS is an optional consideration if brief power interruptions are a concern. It may keep the PC powered through a short outage, but it does not solve an internet or software failure; choose capacity for your equipment and runtime needs.

- OBS cannot connect: check that live streaming is enabled, confirm you selected the right YouTube stream and key, and replace a key that may have been exposed. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream activation.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: OBS says these symptoms generally point to the connection between the PC and ingest server. Check whether the configured bitrate is sustainable, use a stable network path, and retest at a lower bitrate if necessary.
- Encoding or rendering lag: reduce game load, frame rate, scene complexity, or output resolution; consider a suitable hardware encoder if available.
- Game video is black or missing: confirm the selected game or window is running and that the capture source targets the correct application. Try another capture method if the current one does not capture that game.
- No sound or doubled sound: verify the selected audio devices and OBS meters, then remove duplicate routes and check mute states.
- The stream stops while you are away: identify whether the source, OBS, PC, power, connection, or YouTube ingest failed before restarting. Add an alerting or monitoring plan; do not assume a local setup will recover by itself.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be saved in full. If preserving the gameplay matters, use a separate local recording plan and verify that the recording file continues to grow.
