You can turn videos stored on a NAS into a scheduled, always-available TV-style channel by pairing the library with a virtual-channel application and a compatible TV player. The NAS supplies the files; channel software builds the schedule; a media-server client or IPTV app plays the resulting channel. You do not need an antenna for this setup.
How the setup fits together
A NAS is storage, not usually the channel generator. A typical arrangement has three parts: the NAS or media server holding the videos, software that arranges them into a channel and schedule, and a player that receives the channel on a TV or other device. Each connection must work end to end, so test with the actual files and playback client you plan to use.
Virtual channels can make a personal library feel like a “24/7 live cable TV thing,” with programs grouped or scheduled like channels. That is informal shorthand, not a formal product category. The channel is generated from stored media; it is distinct from receiving over-the-air broadcasts.
Choose channel software and a playback route
| Option | Media sources and workflow | Delivery and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Tunarr | Creates channels from Plex or Jellyfin media, with channel configuration and scheduling. Offers Docker and standalone binary installation. | Can present channels as a virtual HDHomeRun tuner for Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, or generate M3U playlists for compatible IPTV apps. |
| ErsatzTV Legacy | Supports local libraries and integrations with Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby. Its documented workflow includes adding media, creating collections and channels, and setting schedules. | Its documentation and product are labeled “ErsatzTV Legacy.” Check current project status and installation notes before adopting it. Supported stream modes and their tradeoffs are covered below. |
| Jellyfin | A media server with clients on multiple platforms. Its Live TV feature accepts tuner and guide-data setups; it is not itself the virtual-channel generator for a stored collection. | Jellyfin documents M3U and HDHomeRun tuners for Live TV. Use a channel generator such as Tunarr or ErsatzTV to turn stored videos into scheduled output, then confirm the integration. |
| Plex | Can act as a client for a virtual tuner. A NAS-file channel does not inherently require an antenna or broadcast tuner. | Plex distinguishes virtual channels from broadcast TV and DVR. Broadcast reception needs an antenna and compatible tuner; DVR recording requires an active Plex Pass. Those are optional broadcast features, not prerequisites for a NAS-file channel. |
Choose based on where your videos live, which integrations the software supports, how you want to deliver the channel, and what your TV can play. Jellyfin also lists Amazon among its client platforms, making a Fire TV device a possible playback option, not a requirement. Verify the specific device model, app version, codecs, and channel-software combination before buying anything.

Set up the channel from your NAS library
- Make the media reachable. Confirm the channel generator can read the NAS folder or the library exposed by Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby. ErsatzTV documents both local libraries and media-server imports; for media-server imports it supports movies and shows, while local libraries support additional media kinds.
- Create a reviewed kids’ collection. Use a dedicated folder or collection containing only titles a parent or guardian has checked. Do not assume that restrictions on a movie or TV library automatically apply to a generated Live TV channel.
- Create channels and schedules. Configure the channel in Tunarr or ErsatzTV, then arrange the selected media into the desired programming. ErsatzTV’s documented quick-start sequence is install, add media, create collections, create channels, create schedules, and configure clients.
- Select how the player will receive it. Use the virtual tuner route if the chosen media server or client supports it, or use an M3U playlist with an IPTV app that accepts one. Jellyfin documents M3U and HDHomeRun tuners for Live TV; Tunarr documents both delivery approaches.
- Test on the real TV and child account. Check channel changes, program transitions, subtitles, audio tracks, and the beginning and end of playback. Test using the actual child profile and device, and keep an adult-controlled account available to fix the library or channel if an unsuitable item slips in.
Pick a stream mode your host and client can handle
The stream format affects both compatibility and the work done by the host. ErsatzTV documents HLS Segmenter, MPEG-TS, and HLS Direct; there is no universal CPU or NAS requirement established for every combination of files, host, and client.
| Mode | What it does | Tradeoffs to test |
|---|---|---|
| HLS Segmenter | Transcodes and supports watermarks. | Described by ErsatzTV as performing best at program boundaries. Transcoding adds work for the host. |
| MPEG-TS | A light wrapper around the HLS Segmenter mode for clients requiring an HDHomeRun tuner. | Use when that tuner-style client path is needed, then test channel and program transitions. |
| HLS Direct | Does not transcode and can work better on lower-powered systems. | It lacks watermarks, and some clients may have issues at program boundaries. Confirm that the specific files play correctly in the target app. |
Plex separately warns that some apps may not play recorded content when Plex runs on a low-power NAS without transcoding support. That is a reason to test your particular file, server, and client—not proof that every virtual-channel setup needs transcoding.

Make the channel safe for children
Do not rely on a playback platform’s parental profile as the only safeguard. Plex’s Parental Controls documentation, last modified June 23, 2023, says its restriction profiles for managed users apply to movie and TV libraries and video-on-demand, but do not apply to Live TV content or channels.
- Review titles before adding them to the channel’s source collection.
- Test what the child account can actually access on the intended TV or app.
- Where the software permits it, limit the child’s account to the intended channel or channels.
- Keep adult access available for correcting the schedule and library.
The software documentation does not determine whether you have the rights to stream a particular program or share it. Use content you are authorized to access and stream, and check applicable licenses and local law before sharing beyond your household or distributing a channel. The answer depends on the titles, territory, and audience.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The channel is empty or missing programs: Check that the generator can access the NAS path or media-server library, then confirm the imported items are included in the collection and schedule.
- The playlist or tuner will not open: Verify that the player supports the selected M3U or virtual HDHomeRun route and that the server and client can reach each other on your network. Try the other documented delivery route if the client supports it.
- Playback stutters or fails on particular files: Test those files directly in the same client. Check whether the chosen mode transcodes, whether the host can handle that work, and whether a direct-play mode is compatible with the client.
- A program transition breaks playback: Test the boundary between programs. ErsatzTV notes that HLS Direct can have issues at program boundaries for some clients; compare with HLS Segmenter where suitable.
- A child can see more than the intended channel: Recheck the actual child profile in the player. Plex’s managed-user restrictions do not apply to Live TV channels, so curate the channel and use any channel-access controls the chosen software provides.
- The NAS seems to be the bottleneck: Separate file access from transcoding load. Test a specific file/client combination and the selected stream mode before concluding that new NAS or transcoding hardware is necessary.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for playing uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream; it does not read a NAS library directly, generate a household TV channel, or stream from a camera. For the NAS-based TV-style setup above, use the virtual-channel workflow. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded recordings live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
