First find out where the distortion begins: compare the source, your encoder’s output or local recording, and the stream viewers hear. If it is already present at the source or encoder, fix that input path; if the encoder output is clean but the viewer stream is not, check YouTube’s stream health and your upload connection. YouTube’s recommended stereo live-audio settings are AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, but matching them will not remove distortion already in the signal.
1. Locate the first point where the audio sounds distorted
Listen to the radio feed before it reaches the encoder, then listen to the encoder’s output and any local recording or archive. Finally, compare those with the audio heard in the YouTube stream. This comparison narrows down the stage to investigate; it does not, by itself, identify a failed device.
- Distortion is present in the source: investigate the audio being sent into the encoder and how it is routed. YouTube notes that poor sound can come from audio and video sources routed to the encoder. YouTube’s livestream troubleshooting guide recommends checking those sources.
- The source is clean, but the encoder output or local recording is distorted: focus on the encoder, its audio input and routing, and any encoder errors or high CPU load.
- The encoder output and local recording sound clean, but viewers hear distortion: check YouTube’s stream health and the outbound connection. Network trouble is one possibility at this stage, not a universal explanation.
If you cannot tell where the change happens, try another encoder as an isolation test—not as a guaranteed repair—and compare its output with the original. YouTube also recommends checking a local archive when investigating a stream that sounds bad.
2. Verify the audio settings YouTube recommends
For stereo live audio over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bitrate of 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not a cure for every kind of distortion. Confirm the encoder’s actual output settings and check whether YouTube reports a specific audio-setting error.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. YouTube’s guidance says 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC; that exception generally does not apply to a stereo radio feed.
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo. If YouTube reports an incorrect audio sample rate, its error guidance says to correct it to 44.1 kHz.
- Bitrate: 128 kbps for stereo audio.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its live streaming error messages. Do not assume that a setting mismatch is the cause unless the encoder output or YouTube’s messages point in that direction.
3. Check the encoder and source routing
Once you know whether the issue is already present before YouTube receives the stream, inspect the encoder path rather than replacing equipment on guesswork.

- Listen to the signal feeding the encoder and the encoder’s own output, if your setup lets you monitor both.
- Check which audio source is selected and routed to the stream. Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended radio feed.
- Look for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load while the stream is running.
- Make a local recording or check the encoder’s archive, then compare it with the live stream.
- If the cause remains unclear, test with another encoder and compare results. Treat this as a way to isolate the problem, not proof that the original encoder is faulty.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors, CPU load and a local archive.
4. Test before going live and monitor the broadcast
Test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to broadcast; a quiet test may not reveal a problem that appears during normal programming. Check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before going live, and continue monitoring audio, video and stream health during the broadcast. YouTube sets out these practices in its live streaming tips.

5. Check upload capacity if the encoder output is clean
If the encoder output and local recording sound clean but the viewer stream does not, check whether your connection can sustain the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving upload headroom and gives this planning calculation: primary stream bitrate + backup stream bitrate + 20% of those combined bitrates. The 20% is a recommended allowance, not a statistic about how often network issues cause distortion. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
If the connection cannot sustain the planned total, reduce the outgoing bitrate or improve the upload capacity, then test again. If it can, continue checking YouTube’s stream-health information and the encoder path rather than assuming bandwidth is the cause.

6. Avoid replacing hardware before you have located the fault
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance does not prescribe a universal microphone, mixer, interface, cable or other purchase for distorted livestream audio. A component may matter if comparisons show the distortion entering at that point, but identify the stage first. The source, encoder routing, encoder output and viewer stream are useful checkpoints; none alone proves a particular piece of hardware has failed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your radio livestream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist rather than a live camera or microphone, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud:
