The playlist is only a pointer to the station’s audio stream—not the audio itself—and it does not give you permission to rebroadcast it.
Before you start: confirm you can rebroadcast the station
Get authorization from the station or other relevant rights holders before transmitting third-party audio. A stream URL only enables playback; it grants no rebroadcast rights. Permissions can depend on the station, music, territory, and applicable agreements, so do not assume that a publicly accessible stream is cleared for YouTube. YouTube may also apply its copyright policies to the broadcast.
You will need the station’s direct stream address or playlist, OBS Studio, VLC installed on the same computer, a visual you have permission to use, and access to YouTube Live. OBS’s VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Find and inspect the station playlist
Get the direct stream address
Start at the station’s official “Listen,” “Streams,” or equivalent page. The page address is not necessarily the stream address: the direct URL points to the audio stream, while an M3U or PLS file usually contains that URL as a playlist entry. A station’s published stream details are preferable to an address copied from an unrelated directory. Background on locating and using a radio stream URL is available from 72FM’s guide.

Check what the playlist contains
A basic M3U file is text. It commonly begins with #EXTM3U, may include an #EXTINF line with a display name, and then lists the stream URL. PLS uses a different text layout. If you open a playlist in a text editor, look for the actual URL rather than treating the playlist filename or download link as the stream itself.
“M3U8” can refer to UTF-8 text in the M3U family, but it is also the extension used for HLS media playlists. Do not assume that every M3U8 file is a simple radio-station playlist or that an HLS media playlist can be handled like a single direct audio URL.

Load the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Install the VLC version matching your OBS architecture; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS if it was open during installation.
- Create a scene. In OBS, create a scene for the radio broadcast so its audio and visual elements are managed together.
- Add the radio source. In the scene’s Sources panel, select + > VLC Video Source. Create a new source, then add the playlist file to its playlist. OBS documents that the VLC Video source can use playlists and provides playlist-looping and network-caching controls.
- Set playback behavior. Enable playlist looping if you want OBS to repeat a list of items. For a single live station stream, looping a file list is not a substitute for a reconnect strategy: the station’s server or connection can still stop responding. Adjust network caching only if needed to address buffering; more buffering can make playback less immediate.
- Verify the audio path. Start playback and check the OBS audio mixer for activity. Listen to the output, confirm the intended source is audible, and ensure no unintended desktop audio or microphone source is being sent.
If the playlist does not load, open it as text and try the station’s direct stream URL in the VLC source instead. A playlist or stream address can fail if it contains a temporary token, has changed after a server migration, is region-restricted, or uses a format the player does not support.
Add a visual and prepare YouTube Live
Build a broadcast scene
YouTube’s live broadcast needs video as well as the radio audio. Add a still image or looping visual to the OBS scene, such as a title card identifying the station, programme, and any relevant schedule information. Use an image or video you own or have permission to use; the fact that the audio is licensed does not clear the visual, and the reverse is also true.

Connect OBS to the broadcast
Connect OBS to YouTube using the available YouTube account connection or the stream-key workflow, then select or create the broadcast and check YouTube’s preview and stream status before you go live. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Account eligibility and initial live-stream activation timing can change, so check current YouTube Help for live-stream setup rather than relying on an older tutorial.

Choose the right YouTube ingest protocol
For a conventional OBS setup, use the ingest protocol and settings presented for your YouTube broadcast. Do not paste HLS-specific requirements into an RTMP setup. If you deliberately configure HLS ingestion, follow YouTube’s current HLS setup instructions: they specify 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and supported codecs. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Its HLS advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz audio sampling and 128 Kbps stereo audio. These figures are for HLS instructions, not universal settings for every OBS broadcast.

OBS on a desktop
OBS is the graphical option for an operator who can monitor the computer and respond if the station feed or broadcast stops. The desktop must remain powered, connected, and running OBS for the broadcast to continue. Playlist looping helps repeat playlist items; it does not guarantee that OBS or the station connection will recover from every failure.

FFmpeg on a Linux VPS
For an unattended setup, a Linux VPS running FFmpeg can combine a radio stream with a still image or video and send the result to YouTube. This replaces a desktop GUI workflow with command-line configuration and server administration. It also introduces hosting expense and maintenance; choose it only if you are prepared to manage the server and troubleshoot the stream. Troubleshoot common failures
- The playlist downloads but does not play: Open it in a text editor and locate the underlying stream URL. Try that URL directly in the VLC Video source. The playlist may be a pointer rather than playable audio.
- The station plays in a browser but not in OBS: The browser page may conceal a different direct stream address, or the stream may use an unsupported format or a restricted/temporary URL. Return to the station’s official stream page and check its current direct-stream details.
- Playback stops or buffers: Check whether the station stream remains reachable and whether its address contains an expired token. Network caching is available in OBS’s VLC source, but increasing it trades responsiveness for buffering headroom and cannot fix a dead or inaccessible station feed.
- OBS shows no audio: Confirm that the VLC source is playing and producing mixer activity, then check that the broadcast scene includes the intended audio source and that it is not muted.
- YouTube receives no video: Add a visible image or video source to the scene and verify the preview before starting the broadcast. Radio audio alone is not a complete YouTube video scene.
- YouTube does not accept the broadcast: Check the selected broadcast, stream key, ingest protocol, and current account eligibility in YouTube Live. If using HLS, confirm that the HLS-specific segment, playlist, transport, and codec requirements are followed.
- The stream drops while unattended: A desktop workflow requires the computer and OBS to stay running and may need operator intervention. A server-based FFmpeg setup can remove the home computer from the path, but requires server administration; neither approach makes a station’s upstream feed immune to failure.
