Open the video on its YouTube watch page and check its current live status, whether Live Chat is available, and whether playback is at the live edge. Treat these as clues together: a playable video may be an archive, chat may be replayed, and DVR can leave you watching behind an active broadcast.
Check the YouTube watch page
- Open the video directly on YouTube. A repost or embedded player may not show the same context as the original watch page.
- Look for a current live status. YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time, while a channel may keep highlights or a replay as a video after the stream ends. Being able to play the video does not prove that the broadcast is still live. YouTube’s explanation of live streams covers the distinction.
- Check for current Live Chat. Live chat is an interaction during a live stream or Premiere, but its presence alone is not proof that the stream is live now.
- Check whether playback is at the live edge. If the player indicates that you are behind, use its live-edge control if available. YouTube DVR can let viewers pause and rewind during an active stream; resuming from a paused point continues from that point rather than jumping straight to the present. YouTube’s DVR guidance says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, with limits also varying on some devices and older app versions.

Why chat can be misleading
YouTube says Live Chat replay is available on all stream archives by default, though creators can turn it off. The same page distinguishes Live Chat, which is unavailable after a stream ends, from comments below the video. An edited stream may also have no chat replay. So an archive with messages beside it may be showing a replay of the original chat, not a live conversation. See YouTube’s guidance on moderating live chat and its explanation of Live Chat.
If the status is still unclear
YouTube’s help guidance explains these signals but does not promise one universal status label or identical controls on every interface. If the watch page, chat, and playback position do not give a consistent answer, do not treat any one icon or panel as conclusive. Check the channel’s current live listing, or describe the result as inconclusive rather than claiming that the stream is definitely live or ended.
