Choose the format before going live—YouTube says you cannot add vertical output after the stream has started.
What a vertical YouTube Live stream does
A vertical live video gives mobile viewers a full-screen portrait experience and can be discovered in YouTube’s Shorts feed. If you run horizontal and vertical versions together, viewers share the same live chat. YouTube also uses one stream URL and one subscriber go-live notification for a dual-format stream; separate vertical metrics become available 24 hours after the stream.
Vertical has trade-offs. YouTube says vertical streams lack some horizontal-stream features, including clickable links in chat or the channel description, live ad midrolls and pre-rolls, and 4K bitrate streaming on the YouTube app. Decide whether the mobile viewing experience outweighs those limitations for your channel.
Before you set up the stream
- Check eligibility: Your channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Initial live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Choose vertical-only or dual format: Vertical-only suits portrait footage. Dual format provides a conventional 16:9 stream as well as a 9:16 version for mobile discovery.
- Prepare portrait assets: Decide how horizontal footage, titles, captions, and other graphics will appear in a vertical frame. A crop can cut off important details; preview the actual composition.
- Choose how the prerecorded feed will run: An encoder sends video to YouTube, while a cloud playout service can keep uploaded material playing without a computer at home. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies both encoder workflows and cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming tools.
- Plan operations: Decide who or what will detect a frozen feed, missing audio, encoder disconnection, or a YouTube interruption—and how the stream will be restarted.
Set up vertical output in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming and confirm eligibility. Verify the channel and check that live streaming is available. If you are enabling it for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Scheduling can give viewers time to find a planned broadcast; it does not itself keep prerecorded video playing continuously.
- Choose the format before starting. For a Live Control Room stream, select the vertical layout you want. YouTube describes center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked layouts. Check that essential picture content and overlays remain visible in portrait orientation.
- For a separate encoder-fed vertical feed, select RTMP(S) and use the corresponding vertical stream key. If sending both formats, route each feed to its intended key. Do not start the stream until both formats and their destinations are correct: vertical output cannot be added after the broadcast begins.
- Configure your encoder or playout service with YouTube’s server URL and the correct stream key. Treat the key like a password. Reset it if it is exposed or otherwise compromised.
- Preview before going live. Confirm the portrait framing, image, audio, and intended stream format in YouTube’s preview, then start the broadcast.
Keep prerecorded video playing around the clock
A 24/7 broadcast needs a source that continues supplying video after the initial setup. A local encoder can send a playlist from a computer, but that computer, its software, and its internet connection then become part of the broadcast chain. A cloud playout service instead plays uploaded recordings from its infrastructure. Whichever route you choose, confirm that it supports the portrait output you need and has a way to monitor or recover the feed.

Bandwidth and monitoring
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. That is operational guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Preview the feed and monitor both audio and video continuously; a stream can remain technically connected while its picture freezes or audio fails.
Plan for long streams and archives
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted broadcast longer than 12 hours will produce an automatic archive. If you need recordings, plan how to split or restart the broadcast and verify current YouTube behavior before relying on a particular archive workflow.

Protect the channel’s rights and eligibility
Use recordings, music, footage, and graphics that you own or have permission to stream. A 24/7 schedule does not change copyright obligations or YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules. Make sure any third-party material is licensed for the use you intend, and review YouTube’s current policies before putting a long-running channel on air.

Troubleshooting a vertical 24/7 stream
- Vertical output is missing: Confirm that you selected a vertical layout in Live Control Room or sent the encoder feed to the vertical stream key. You cannot add the format once the stream has begun.
- The picture is cropped badly: Review the selected layout and the portrait preview. Reposition important content and graphics within the visible 9:16 area before restarting.
- The stream disconnects or buffers: Check the outbound connection and keep the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom above total bitrate. Review the encoder or playout connection, then restart or recover the feed using your operating plan.
- Video plays but audio is absent or poor: Check the source file, encoder audio input, and the live preview. Include audio checks in ongoing monitoring rather than relying on a successful initial connection.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or playout configuration with the new key.
- No automatic archive appears: Check whether the broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive scope. For longer continuous channels, use a deliberate split or restart plan and confirm current platform behavior.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Recheck channel verification, age requirements, live-stream restrictions, and whether first-time activation has completed.
