You can livestream a podcast WAV file on YouTube with OBS Studio: add the WAV as a Media Source, place cover art or another visual in the scene, and connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Enable looping only if you want the episode to repeat; otherwise it plays once.
Before you start
You need a finished WAV file, OBS Studio, a visual such as podcast cover art, and a YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. Check your channel before preparing the event: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
You do not need special capture hardware just to play a finished audio file with a visual. YouTube says creators can start with the equipment they have. Decide first whether the episode should play once or repeat, whether static cover art is enough, and whether the event should be public, private, unlisted, or scheduled.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live, and choose the Stream tab.
- Set the stream title, description, visibility, and other event details. Choose public if anyone should be able to watch, private for restricted access, or unlisted if viewers should access it through the link. You can also schedule the stream. YouTube says scheduling provides a shareable URL and lets viewers set reminders.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. You will enter these in OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a stream to your event.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Studio workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build the episode scene in OBS
- Create a scene in OBS and give it a recognizable name, such as “Podcast episode.”
- Add a Media Source, select the local WAV file, and confirm it appears in the preview. OBS documents WAV support for Media Sources. Enable Loop if you want the file to restart automatically at the end; leave it off for a one-time play. See OBS Media Sources.
- Add an Image Source and choose your local cover-art image. Resize and position it in the scene so it fills the canvas or sits alongside any text you add. OBS documents local image files as a supported Image Source input: OBS Image Sources.
- Arrange the sources in the preview. If you want a moving visualizer, captions, or animation, set those up as additional sources; a still image is the simpler option. OBS’s Sources guide explains how sources layer in a scene.
If you have several episode files and want a playlist rather than one WAV, OBS documents a VLC Video source for playlists; VLC is required. For a single file, a Media Source is sufficient.
Connect OBS and set streaming output
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service, or use a custom server option if appropriate for your installed OBS version.
- Enter the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Keep the key private.
- Open OBS Settings, then Output and Video, and set the encoder, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval. Menu wording can vary by OBS version.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For stereo audio, it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use a codec supported by your chosen OBS encoder and YouTube ingest settings. The official guidance does not prescribe a podcast-specific preset.

| H.264 video output | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |

| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | Not stated for this row in the cited table |
These are YouTube Help’s video-ingest recommendations; the settings page does not show a publication year. A podcast cover image may not need a high frame rate, but the page does not provide a special preset for static-art audio streams. Choose output your computer and connection can sustain, and consult YouTube’s encoder settings.
Run an upload speed test before the event. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom, and notes that network conditions can vary. A bitrate that is too high for the available connection can cause buffering or stream-health warnings. See YouTube’s network guidance.

Test, start, and end the livestream
- Start OBS streaming and wait for the incoming signal and preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that the cover image is visible and the WAV is audible. Listen through the beginning and confirm that the audio is not clipped, too quiet, or unexpectedly silent. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to what the live stream will contain: encoder settings and testing guidance.
- When the preview and stream health look right, click Go live in YouTube if the event has not already started automatically. Monitor the stream during playback for audio, picture, and health alerts.
- When finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a guarantee for a longer stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Choose the right playback and event setup
- One episode, played once: Use one Media Source with Loop disabled. This is the simplest choice when viewers should hear the complete recording once.
- One episode, repeated: Enable Loop if it should restart when it reaches the end. Make clear in the event description if the audio repeats.
- Several files: Use an OBS VLC Video playlist source if you want files to advance in sequence; it requires VLC. Confirm playback order and transitions before going live.
- Static cover art or richer visuals: A still Image Source is quick to set up. Text, a visualizer, or motion graphics require additional scene sources and their own testing.
- Immediate event or scheduled event: Go live when ready for an immediate broadcast. Schedule in advance if a shareable event URL and viewer reminders will help you promote it.
Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and current stream key from the correct Live Control Room event. Confirm the channel is eligible and that OBS is actively streaming.
- The preview has no audio: Confirm the Media Source points to the correct WAV, that playback has started, and that the OBS audio meter responds. Check the audio encoder settings and listen to the YouTube preview before starting the event.
- The image is missing or cropped: Check that the Image Source references the correct local file and resize or reposition it in the scene preview.
- The episode stops at the end: That is expected with Loop disabled. Enable Loop only if repeating the file is intended.
- The stream buffers or health is poor: Lower the video bitrate or output resolution, verify the connection’s upload capacity, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- The audio is too quiet, clipped, or out of sync: Check the WAV playback level and OBS audio meters, then retest the full scene and preview before the event. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend monitoring audio and video quality.
Copyright and channel considerations
Having a finished WAV does not by itself establish that you have the right to broadcast every element in it. Check the rights to the episode, music, clips, and other material before streaming, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules for your channel and location. The cited encoder and OBS documentation explains setup, not whether a particular podcast recording is cleared or eligible for monetization.
