Short answer: OBS is the better fit for an operator-run show with scenes, graphics, microphones, cameras, or other live inputs. FFmpeg is often the more direct tool for sending a sequence of prerecorded files, especially when compatible files can be joined without re-encoding. Neither one schedules and manages a YouTube broadcast by itself: YouTube Studio (or the Live Streaming API) handles the broadcast event, while OBS or FFmpeg sends the audio and video.
What “scheduling a playlist” involves
There are two separate jobs: creating and scheduling the YouTube broadcast, and transmitting media to it. In YouTube Studio, schedule the event in the Live Control Room, then connect an encoder using the stream URL and stream key YouTube provides. A scheduled stream can be promoted, and viewers can set reminders. YouTube’s encoder instructions say that starting the encoder sends content and stopping it ends the transmission; they do not guarantee that every encoder start or disconnect automatically produces the exact scheduled-event transition you expect. Check the event’s current settings and test the complete workflow before relying on it unattended. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the Studio and encoder steps.
The same division appears in YouTube’s Live Streaming API: a liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream represents its audio-video feed and streaming settings. A channel can reuse stream settings for scheduled events or create distinct stream resources for separate broadcasts. If your automation must create or manage events as well as send media, that is additional work beyond running an encoder command. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
OBS vs FFmpeg at a glance
| Question | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Operator-controlled shows that combine scenes, graphics, microphones, cameras, or other live sources. | Repeatable media pipelines, including transmitting a sequence of prerecorded files. |
| How you operate it | Graphical production and encoder environment. | Command-line media framework; you define inputs, processing, and output. |
| Playlist handling | Can be used in an encoder workflow, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a robust native unattended playlist scheduler. | Offers multiple ways to concatenate media; compatible inputs can be joined without re-encoding, while the concat filter supports more flexible processing with re-encoding. |
| Does it schedule YouTube events? | No. Schedule and manage the broadcast separately in YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API. | No. Schedule and manage the broadcast separately in YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API. |
| What unattended operation also needs | A tested start procedure, a reliable host, process supervision, monitoring, and recovery planning. | A scheduler, a reliable host, logging, process supervision, monitoring, and recovery planning. |
YouTube lists OBS among its verified encoder software, while noting that listed products are not made by YouTube. That makes OBS a documented encoder option; it does not establish that it offers every feature needed to schedule and run a playlist unattended. See YouTube’s verified encoder listing.

Choose based on how the show is made
Choose OBS for an interactive production
Use OBS when a person needs to switch scenes, manage sources, adjust audio, or combine prerecorded material with live camera, desktop, microphone, and graphic elements. Its graphical production environment suits a show where an operator makes decisions while it is on air. YouTube documents OBS as an encoder, but confirm the current OBS version and your specific workflow before assuming it can automatically schedule and sequence files without supervision.
Choose FFmpeg for a repeatable file sequence
FFmpeg is a stronger candidate when the source is a known set of media files and the task is to prepare or transmit them predictably. It can concatenate compatible inputs without re-encoding, or use a concat filter when the files need transformation. The command-line approach is easier to automate as a process, but it does not supply the scheduler, reliable host, monitoring, or YouTube event management that unattended operation requires.

Use both only when each has a clear job
A workflow may use FFmpeg to prepare or sequence media and OBS for an operator-controlled production, but every extra stage adds configuration and another possible failure point. For a simple unattended file playlist, avoid adding a graphical encoder unless you need its production controls. For a show built around interactive scenes and live sources, avoid treating a media-concatenation command as a substitute for an operator interface.
Build a playlist with FFmpeg
First inspect the source files. A copy-based concat workflow depends on compatible streams; check codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps. Matching file extensions do not establish compatibility, and stream-copy concatenation should not be promised to produce seamless transitions for arbitrary inputs.

When compatible files can be joined without re-encoding
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. Prepare a concat input list using the format and syntax documented by FFmpeg, then use that list as the input to the output pipeline. Consult the project’s FAQ on concatenating media for the concat demuxer’s requirements and the alternatives. Do not assume unrelated files can be copied together unchanged: if their streams or timestamps do not match, the result may fail or behave incorrectly.
When files need conversion or more flexible handling
Use the concat filter when the inputs need re-encoding or when you need the greater flexibility it provides. Choose output encoding and stream settings to suit the files and YouTube ingestion workflow; re-encoding adds processing and can affect quality. FFmpeg’s concatenation guidance distinguishes the demuxer from the filter, and its formats documentation covers input and output formats. The right filter graph and command depend on the actual media, so validate the playlist with representative files before scheduling a long run.

Connect the media pipeline to YouTube
- Create the event: Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio and obtain the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room. If a script must create or manage broadcasts programmatically, account for the separate Live Streaming API resources.
- Prepare the playlist: Select the concat method that fits the files, verify compatibility, and test the output locally or with a private test event before a public scheduled broadcast.
- Configure the output: Set FFmpeg’s output to the YouTube-provided ingest destination and use the event’s stream key. Keep the key private; do not put it in a public script, repository, or log.
- Start it at the intended time: Use an external scheduler or process manager to launch the command. FFmpeg can process real-time inputs and write to streaming outputs, but it does not itself schedule the YouTube event or supervise its own continued operation.
- Monitor and stop deliberately: Capture logs, watch for process and ingest errors, and decide how a failure should be detected and restarted. Confirm how the scheduled event behaves when the encoder connects or disconnects, then end the event using the intended Studio or API workflow.
Run the playlist with OBS
OBS is appropriate when the playlist is part of a show that also needs scenes, graphics, audio controls, or live sources. YouTube identifies OBS as verified encoder software and lists it as HLS-capable. That does not make OBS a YouTube scheduler, nor does the available documentation establish a robust built-in unattended scheduler for playlists. For unattended use, verify the behavior of the specific OBS version and any scheduling method you choose rather than assuming that opening OBS at the event time starts the scheduled broadcast correctly.
- Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio: Create the event in the Live Control Room and retrieve its stream URL and key.
- Set up the production in OBS: Configure the scenes and media sources the show requires, then set the encoder output to the destination and key for the scheduled event. Check the current YouTube and OBS settings rather than relying on a preset from another event.
- Test the complete sequence: Verify that the sources play as intended, that audio is present, and that the scheduled event reaches the expected state when OBS connects. Test what happens if OBS disconnects; do not infer auto-start or auto-stop behavior from the fact that the broadcast is scheduled.
- Provide operation and recovery: For a human-run show, have the operator monitor the program and reconnect if needed. For unattended operation, arrange a reliable host, a verified start method, monitoring, and a recovery procedure outside the assumption that OBS will manage everything automatically.
Keep HLS requirements separate from file playlists
A local playlist of prerecorded videos is not the same thing as an HLS transport playlist. YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions apply when sending an HLS stream: segments must be MPEG-TS and between 1 and 4 seconds long; byte ranges are unsupported; the playlist must roll with no more than five outstanding segments; and uploads use HTTPS POST or PUT. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are transport-ingestion requirements, not requirements for how your source-video playlist is organized. OBS is listed as an HLS-capable encoder. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Plan for unattended operation and YouTube rules
Schedule, transmit, and supervise as separate responsibilities
An unattended stream needs more than a playlist command or an open OBS project. Decide who creates each YouTube broadcast, what starts the encoder at the scheduled time, where the process runs, how errors are detected, and who or what responds to a disconnect. YouTube’s encoder instructions and API documentation describe event setup separately from the media feed; FFmpeg’s format documentation describes media processing and output, not process supervision. Treat the complete chain as something to test, not as a guarantee supplied by either encoder.
Protect rights and comply with YouTube’s live policies
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use, including music, documentary footage, and any embedded material. Scheduling or looping a recording does not make it exempt from copyright or YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for the channel and content, and check that a long-running playlist does not include material you are not authorized to broadcast.
Understand the archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on the archive as the only copy of a long broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The scheduled event exists but the channel is not live: The event and the encoder transmission are separate. Confirm the encoder is connected to the correct event’s stream URL and key, then check the current event state in Studio.
- The playlist stops or fails at a file boundary: The inputs may not meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements or may have inconsistent timestamps. Inspect the streams and use the concat filter with re-encoding when transformation is needed.
- The process starts but does not restart after an error: Running FFmpeg or OBS is not the same as supervising it. Check scheduler and process-manager behavior, logs, host availability, and the recovery procedure.
- OBS opens, but the scheduled event does not transition as expected: Do not assume process launch guarantees YouTube auto-start or that disconnect guarantees auto-stop. Test the actual event settings and connection sequence.
- An HLS ingest is rejected: Check the HLS-specific transport requirements—segment format and duration, rolling playlist behavior, HTTPS upload method, and unsupported byte ranges. These do not describe the format of a local source playlist.
