Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst identify what is restarting: if the YouTube watch page goes offline and returns, the broadcast or encoder connection is restarting; if the live page stays online but the same prerecorded clip begins again, the playout source is looping. Those are different problems, and YouTube does not provide a universal setting to stop every third-party player from repeating its video.
Tell a broadcast restart from a video replay
YouTube separates a live broadcast—the event and watch page—from the incoming stream of audio and video. A 24/7 feed can also exist independently of a particular broadcast. That distinction helps pinpoint where to look: a broadcast-level interruption involves the event or incoming feed, while a content-level replay usually involves the playlist or playout system feeding the encoder. See YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation.
- The watch page goes offline, then returns: check the encoder connection, stream destination and key, and the broadcast’s start/stop settings.
- The live indicator remains, but the clip starts over: check the playlist, repeat setting, or playout behavior in the software or service supplying the video.
- Only your playback position jumps or changes: distinguish viewer playback controls from what the encoder is sending. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind; when they resume, YouTube continues from where they paused. That is not, by itself, evidence that the broadcast or video source restarted.
Without knowing which symptom you see and what software or hosted service feeds the encoder, there is no single setting that can be identified as the cause.
If the YouTube broadcast is going offline
Check the encoder’s connection details
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream status while the encoder is running. Note whether YouTube is receiving the feed when the watch page ends or returns.
- Verify the Live server URL and current stream key in the encoder. YouTube Help says, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share it. If you reset the key, update the encoder to match. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube’s settings documentation says these options let creators start or stop streaming from the encoder. With auto-start enabled, YouTube starts a broadcast when video begins arriving on its bound stream; with auto-stop enabled, the broadcast ends about a minute after video transmission stops. Check whether those settings fit how your encoder behaves during a brief interruption. They affect broadcast lifecycle, but their presence does not prove they caused a particular restart. Details are in YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guide.
- Check the encoder’s own status and logs. If the encoder reports a disconnect or error, use its support documentation to investigate the cause. YouTube’s guidance cannot diagnose the behavior of every software or hardware encoder.
If the encoder cannot start
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for encoder start errors directs creators to get or copy the stream key in the Live Control Room and update the encoder. If you connect streaming software through an account login instead of a stream key, YouTube says to contact that software’s support. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

If the broadcast stays live but the video starts over
Inspect the source that is supplying video to the encoder: the active playlist, repeat or loop option, scheduled playout, and any transition between files. If one clip is supposed to play once, check whether the playlist contains it more than once or whether the player is configured to repeat. If several recordings are meant to rotate continuously, a clip restarting at the end may be expected playlist behavior rather than a YouTube interruption.
YouTube’s encoder and broadcast documentation covers how a feed reaches a broadcast and how that broadcast starts or stops; it does not establish a universal YouTube control for the repeat behavior of every third-party player. Look for the relevant playback setting in the software or hosted service that actually sends the video. If it is unclear, consult that product’s logs or support rather than changing YouTube’s auto-start setting as a substitute.

Do not mistake the 12-hour archive note for a restart rule
YouTube Help says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement concerns archiving; it does not establish that every stream is forced to restart when it reaches 12 hours. Check the encoder, broadcast status, and playout source for the actual failure rather than treating the archive note as a universal restart threshold. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose an operating setup that fits your feed
YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Its documentation identifies those categories, but does not rank them or establish that one category automatically reconnects better or prevents a prerecorded clip from repeating. Before changing equipment, assess whether the setup handles your input and unattended schedule, whether it recovers after interruptions, and whether you can inspect its status and logs.

If you want prerecorded video to play continuously without leaving a computer running at home, a hosted service is another implementation path. Check that a provider supports your intended YouTube workflow and the specific playlist and recovery behavior you need; claims about those features are provider-specific, not a YouTube guarantee. If your current encoder or playout software already does the job, a paid service may not be necessary.
