To broadcast a podcast season as a continuous YouTube live stream, schedule a YouTube Live event, connect an encoder such as OBS with the event’s stream URL and key, and feed the encoder a prepared sequence of episodes. YouTube provides the live-stream connection and encoder settings; the episode playlist, transitions, and recovery plan are your production choices. Test the complete sequence before promoting it.
1. Confirm your channel can go live
Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. You must be at least 16 years old to stream. If this is your channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
2. Prepare the season feed
YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a program feed; it does not establish a built-in podcast-season playlist workflow. Arrange the episodes in your encoder or chosen streaming automation workflow, then decide how the season should play.
- Choose whether each episode plays once or the season loops.
- Decide whether to include a short introduction, interstitial, or break between episodes.
- Determine what the feed should do if the encoder, computer, or network disconnects, and who will monitor or restart it.
- Run a full test of episode changes and transitions. Check that audio levels and any on-screen titles or artwork remain appropriate throughout.
Confirm you have the necessary rights to stream the episodes, music, artwork, and any trailers. A live broadcast is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules; having a podcast available elsewhere does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast every element on YouTube.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room.
- Choose Manage, then schedule a stream.
- Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details. Scheduling gives you an event watch page to share in advance.
- Review the event’s options for DVR, latency, auto-start, and auto-stop. Confirm how those choices behave in your test before relying on them during a long broadcast.
YouTube documents these controls in its Live Control Room settings.
4. Connect the encoder and choose stream settings
Connect with the stream URL and key
Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room into your encoder. The key allows the encoder to send video to your channel, so treat it like a password. If it is exposed or compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder. Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as the encrypted form of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and recommended encoder settings.

Match resolution and bitrate to the production
A podcast feed with static artwork may not need 1080p, but choose a resolution and frame rate that your graphics, encoder, and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations list the following for 1080p at 30 frames per second:
| Setting | YouTube recommendation |
|---|---|
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a requirement that every podcast use 1080p. For another resolution or frame rate, consult YouTube’s encoder settings table instead of extrapolating from these figures.

Check upload capacity
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate. Check upload speed, not just download speed, and test while the network is under realistic conditions. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate with headroom, reduce the output settings or improve the connection before starting the season.
5. Test and launch the broadcast
- Set up the event in advance. YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours before an event.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, as YouTube recommends.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm audio, video, event access, and the episode sequence.
- Verify any local recording you intend to use as a backup, and check that it captures the expected audio and video.
- Start the event and keep an eye on stream health and the episode transitions during transmission.

6. Choose between one long event and shorter sessions
A single event keeps the season on one watch page, but YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a longer season broadcast will produce a complete automatic replay. If a complete archive matters, split the broadcast into sessions under 12 hours or make and verify a separate local recording. Shorter events also provide natural points to recover from a production interruption, though they require scheduling and communicating session boundaries.
YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

7. Set viewer controls for a prerecorded feed
- DVR: Viewers can pause and rewind when DVR is enabled. Decide whether that experience suits the season presentation.
- Latency: Lower latency is useful when responding to viewers in real time. For a prerecorded feed with little interaction, normal latency may be simpler.
- Auto-start and auto-stop: These are configurable stream choices. Confirm the selected behavior in a test rather than assuming the event will start or end the way you expect.
YouTube explains these options in its Live Control Room settings.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The channel cannot start a live stream | Verification, restrictions, or first-time activation is incomplete | Check channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| The encoder will not connect | Incorrect stream URL or key, or a stale key | Copy the current URL and key from the scheduled event. Reset a compromised key and replace it in the encoder. |
| Stream health is poor or playback stalls | Insufficient upload capacity or settings the connection cannot sustain | Check upload speed, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| The live replay is missing or incomplete | The session ran 12 hours or longer | Plan sessions under 12 hours or record locally and verify the recording. |
| An episode transition fails or the feed stops | The sequence or recovery behavior was not tested | Test the full episode order and interruption recovery before the public broadcast; monitor stream health while live. |
