Not necessarily. FFmpeg may use less electricity than OBS for a simple loop on some computers, but the app name alone cannot predict whole-system power use. The result depends on what each program is doing, the encoder and settings, and the hardware. There is no direct matched test establishing that FFmpeg draws less than OBS while looping the same video to YouTube.
If you want to know which is cheaper to run on your setup, compare both under equivalent conditions and measure power at the wall—not just CPU use.
Why the application alone does not determine power use
FFmpeg reads media, can process or filter it, and writes an output. OBS can also encode, but it may additionally render and composite scenes with sources, scaling, and filters. A minimal OBS scene and a complex scene are different workloads; likewise, a basic FFmpeg loop and a command that transcodes or filters video are not equivalent.
OBS Project’s Hardware Encoding guidance says hardware encoders move encoding from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and are generally recommended for performance. That describes encoder architecture and performance, not a guarantee that total electricity use will fall. CPU percentage is useful context, but it does not measure the power drawn by the entire computer.

What published wall-power measurements can—and cannot—tell you
A paper, “Towards Bridging Online Game Playing and Live Streaming”, measured wall power during a graphics benchmark capture on one system. Its setup used a 1920Ă—1080 benchmark, a 3,500 kb/s stream, and a two-second keyframe interval. The meter sampled every 500 ms and had stated precision of ±2.5%. The paper’s reported readings were:
| Condition in the study | Reported wall power |
|---|---|
| Game-only baseline | 157 W |
| OBS x264 software encoding, 30 fps | 250 W |
| OBS x264 software encoding, 60 fps | 244 W |
| OBS NVENC hardware encoding, 30 fps | 158 W |
| OBS NVENC hardware encoding, 60 fps | 183 W |
These are readings from that specific, older game-streaming experiment—not predictions for a current PC, and not a comparison of FFmpeg against OBS. The study streamed to Twitch rather than testing a YouTube loop. Its values are watts, not daily energy use.

A 2024 survey, “A Survey on Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact of Video Streaming”, treats encoding, storage, retrieval, decoding, and display as parts of the energy picture and notes the lack of comprehensive open measurement data across device types and coding parameters. Broad claims need clearly matched conditions.
How to compare FFmpeg and OBS fairly on your computer
Run both programs on the same machine and make their output and workload as alike as possible. A plug-in electricity usage monitor or another suitable wall meter can measure whole-system draw; the specific meter used in the paper is a measurement example, not a required product.

- Match the workload. Use the same looped file, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, network connection, and run duration. Make sure both applications actually loop the same source and deliver equivalent output.
- Keep the computer consistent. Use the same operating-system power mode, display state, and background applications. Avoid other workloads that could change power draw during one run but not the other.
- Measure idle and streaming draw. Record the computer’s background or idle wall power, then measure whole-system power while each stream runs. Compare the additional power above the same baseline rather than relying on CPU percentage.
- Alternate and repeat runs. Run FFmpeg and OBS in alternating order and repeat the comparison so that a change in room temperature, background activity, or run order does not decide the result.
- Check that the stream works. Record dropped frames and stream health, and verify the loop continues to play. Lower power is not a useful result if that configuration fails to deliver the intended stream.
CPU and GPU activity can help explain a difference, but the wall measurement answers the electricity question. Use a meter with sufficient resolution for your system and report its accuracy and measurement conditions if sharing results.
Settings that need to stay fixed
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for documented RTMP/RTMPS live input, provides bitrate ranges by codec and resolution, supports rates up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. For a fair app comparison, choose a codec and settings supported by both configurations, then keep them constant. Test with representative audio and motion and monitor stream health.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Scene complexity matters too. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance identifies resolution, frame rate, sources, and filters as factors affecting processing and GPU demands. A static loop with a simple scene avoids some compositing work, but it does not prove that OBS will draw more—or less—than a lean FFmpeg setup on your hardware.
