There is no single YouTube setting that guarantees a 24/7 stream will recover from every failure. Build separate safeguards for a temporary network drop, an encoder crash, a computer losing power, and YouTube ending or archiving the broadcast. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls affect how an encoder starts or stops a stream; they are not a universal watchdog.
Understand what has to recover
A reliable setup is a chain, not one toggle. The encoder must reconnect after a brief connection loss. If its process exits, something must restart it. If the host loses power, it must come back when power returns. Separately, the YouTube broadcast itself must still be available to resume.
- Network interruption: The encoder may lose its connection while still running.
- Encoder failure: The streaming application may stop or crash, leaving nothing to reconnect.
- Host failure: The computer may shut down or restart, so the encoder cannot run until the host is back.
- YouTube event state: YouTube may stop, end, or archive the broadcast independently of the encoder.
Each layer needs its own configuration and test. A reconnect option cannot restart an application that has exited or a computer that is off.
Connect the encoder to a persistent YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. YouTube explains that the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in logs, screenshots, scripts, or public documentation.
- If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube and replace the saved key in the encoder. The encoder must use the new key to connect.
For a 24/7 workflow, use a persistent stream configuration where appropriate rather than assuming a key or event will remain valid under every setup. Confirm the selected stream and its state in Live Control Room before leaving the system unattended.

Set YouTube’s start and stop behavior deliberately
YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop as controls that let the encoder start or stop the stream. Review these settings for the selected stream in Live Control Room and test their effect before relying on unattended operation. They do not restart a stopped encoder process, restore a failed computer, or guarantee recovery from a network problem. See Manage your live stream settings.
Configure recovery at each failure point
Temporary network loss
Enable the encoder’s reconnect behavior and, if available in your environment, consider a separate recovery mechanism for the network path. YouTube’s setup guidance describes connecting an encoder, but it does not promise that every interruption will resume the same broadcast. Encoder controls vary by software and version; consult the current documentation for the exact encoder you use rather than relying on a generic setting name.

Encoder process exits
Reconnect behavior only helps while the encoder is running. A process supervisor or service manager can be configured to relaunch a failed application, but the right method depends on the operating system and how the encoder is installed. Check that relaunching does not require an interactive login, and verify that the application restores the intended stream settings without exposing the stream key.
Computer loses power or restarts
Configure the host’s firmware or operating system to start after power is restored where that option exists, and arrange for the encoder to launch automatically after boot. These are host-level measures, not YouTube features. A restart setting cannot help if power or internet service remains unavailable.

Network path fails
For a stream whose interruption matters, consider whether the connection has an independent recovery path, such as a separately available backup connection. Availability and behavior depend on the network equipment and service; do not assume an encoder reconnect setting supplies network failover.
Test the whole recovery chain
Test in a controlled window before leaving a channel unattended. Change one failure condition at a time so you can see which safeguard worked.

- Interrupt network access briefly, then restore it. Observe whether the encoder reconnects and whether viewers can see the broadcast again.
- Stop the encoder process. Confirm whether the configured supervisor relaunches it and whether it connects to the intended YouTube stream.
- Restart the host. Check that the computer returns, the encoder starts without manual intervention, and the stream reconnects.
- For each test, inspect Live Control Room and any available application or system logs. Confirm whether the same YouTube event resumed, whether it remained available to viewers, and whether a silent failure would be visible to you.
Record the expected result and the actual result for each test. If any layer requires manual action, the setup is not yet unattended through that failure case.

YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The page does not show a publication year, so verify current handling in Live Control Room before building a long-running broadcast around this threshold. Do not assume a single event can run indefinitely; plan event boundaries and archive needs separately from encoder recovery.

Software encoding or a hardware encoder?
YouTube describes encoders as software or standalone hardware that convert video for streaming. Its general guidance does not establish which devices reconnect after a network outage, restart after a crash, offer failover, or provide alerts. Compare specific products only after checking their current manufacturer documentation for those behaviors; a dedicated encoder by itself is not a complete recovery plan.
