If a prerecorded video must keep playing, choose the lowest available quality that still works, use sensible TV picture settings, and measure the complete setup before assuming a change saves power. There is no universal wattage or guaranteed savings figure for YouTube playback: the result depends on the screen, playback device, settings and viewing conditions.
First decide whether playback needs to run continuously
A video playing around the clock keeps the display and playback device working. If continuous playback is not essential, stop the video or use the sleep timer or power-management settings on the TV or device. The exact menu varies by model; consult its manual for the right steps.
YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt may pause playback unless you respond, but its timing varies by client. It is not a dependable way to manage power. See YouTube’s explanation of the “Continue watching?” prompt.
Turn off autoplay to prevent the next video from starting
If you only need one video to play, disable autoplay so a related video does not start when the current one ends. YouTube documents separate controls for mobile and tablet, computer, TV or game console, and casting; steps and labels can differ by device. Follow the device-specific instructions in YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.

Autoplay off only prevents the next video from starting automatically. It does not turn off the screen or put the playback device to sleep.
Use the lowest quality that remains useful
When playback must continue, manually select a lower available resolution if it still makes the video clear enough for its purpose. On computer, TV and mobile, open the video’s settings and choose quality; YouTube’s guide is “Change the quality of your video”.

The available or selected quality can depend on connection speed, player or screen size, the uploaded video, and browser support. Not every resolution is available for every video or device. YouTube’s quality guidance does not quantify electricity savings, so do not assume that a particular resolution change will reduce power by a fixed percentage.
Adjust TV picture settings carefully
For a television, start with its default picture setting. The U.S. Department of Energy says the default picture setting is the one used for ENERGY STAR qualification; that U.S.-oriented guidance does not establish the best setting for every model, room or viewer. If you change brightness or picture mode, compare the energy use on your own TV rather than relying on a universal recommendation. ENERGY STAR television criteria measure power under defined picture settings and lighting conditions; those controlled criteria are not a personal estimate for your room or viewing setup. Turn off Ambient mode if you do not want the effect
YouTube Ambient mode casts colors from the video into the area around it on screen. You can switch it off using the control described in YouTube Help: Watch YouTube in ambient mode on a computer. The cited guidance does not quantify its electricity effect, so treat this as an optional display preference, not a proven major energy-saving measure.

Choose the playback device by measuring the whole setup
If you already have a lower-use streaming device, it may be preferable to keeping a full computer or game console running. ENERGY STAR’s digital media player page gives broad category comparisons: it says a computer uses 11 times the energy of a digital media player, a game console uses 15 times the energy, and a certified digital media player is 45% more efficient. These are category-level statements, not measurements of your particular devices or a YouTube 24/7 session; the page does not state a publication date. Read the ENERGY STAR Digital Media Player information in that context.
For a useful comparison, include every device that is powered for playback: the display, streaming box or computer, and any other equipment in the setup. Comparing only the player can miss the screen’s contribution. Also consider whether a device must remain awake and whether the lower-energy option gives you acceptable viewing quality.

Measure before claiming a saving
- Choose a meter suitable for your outlet and load. Check the plug type and load rating, and use a meter that records cumulative energy over time if you want to compare a long playback interval.
- Record the full setup. Measure the display and playback device together where practical, including other equipment that is actually powered for the session.
- Keep the comparison consistent. Use the same video and interval where practical. Record the baseline, then change one setting or device at a time.
- Compare the readings. Note power or accumulated energy for the same duration. A lower watt reading at one moment and cumulative energy over a long session answer different questions.
ENERGY STAR’s Version 4.0 computer monitor specification is a legacy technical testing document. It supports the general idea of defined power measurement, not a particular consumer meter or household procedure.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating autoplay as a power switch: it prevents the next related video from starting, but playback devices and screens may remain on.
- Assuming lower resolution guarantees a specific saving: YouTube describes quality selection and availability, not electricity reductions.
- Changing several settings at once: you will not know which change affected the measured result.
- Comparing only the streaming device: include the screen and the rest of the powered setup for a meaningful household comparison.
- Applying category ratios to your hardware: ENERGY STAR’s figures are broad comparisons, not current model-specific or YouTube-specific results.
