Leaving a laptop on to stream to YouTube all day uses electricity, but there is no reliable universal cost or wattage: it depends on the laptop, stream workload, connected equipment, and your electricity rate. Measure the setup’s average power draw at the wall, then calculate its energy use and cost. A laptop may become warm or hot during sustained streaming, but warmth alone does not mean it is overheating; keep vents clear and act on thermal warnings, shutdowns, or persistent performance problems.
How much electricity does 24/7 laptop streaming use?
The accurate answer comes from measuring your own setup while it is doing the work you intend to run. The sources do not establish a typical wattage for every laptop encoding a YouTube stream. A charger’s maximum rating, a laptop’s standby draw, or figures for video playback are not substitutes for measuring an active broadcast.
Measure average power at the wall
- Use a plug-in electricity usage meter rated for your outlet and the equipment you will connect. A wall measurement includes the laptop’s power supply and anything else plugged into the meter.
- Connect only the equipment you want to include in the estimate. If you want the laptop alone, isolate it; if a monitor or other device will remain on with the stream, include it.
- Run a representative stream and record energy use over a meaningful period. Because power fluctuates, divide the energy recorded by the elapsed time to get average power. The U.S. Department of Energy’s measurement guidance explains this averaging approach; it is general measurement guidance, not a laptop livestream test.
- Keep the workload consistent with your intended use while measuring: stream resolution and frame rate, screen brightness, power mode, peripherals, and networking conditions can affect the result.
A watt measures the rate of power use; a kilowatt-hour (kWh) measures energy over time, and is the unit commonly used on electricity bills.

Use your measured average watts and the electricity rate that applies to additional consumption:

kWh = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours streamed
electricity cost = kWh × your price per kWh
For a 24/7 run over exactly 30 days, use 720 hours. For other billing periods, multiply by the actual number of hours streamed. Use the variable rate or tariff relevant to extra usage; if your electricity price changes by time of day, account for the applicable time-of-use rates rather than assuming one flat rate.
Will a laptop overheat if it streams all day?
Sustained streaming can make a laptop warm or hot, depending on the machine, workload, ventilation, and surroundings. Dell says a laptop feeling warm after 10–15 minutes of continuous use can be normal, and notes that streaming video and blocked vents can contribute to heat. That observation is not a universal temperature limit, nor proof that any particular laptop is suitable for unattended 24/7 operation. Huawei also notes that demanding workloads and background activity can raise heat and fan noise.

Help the laptop shed heat
- Use a firm surface and keep air intakes and exhausts unobstructed.
- Do not run it on bedding or a cushion, or inside a closed cabinet.
- Keep the room and operating conditions within the laptop manufacturer’s guidance.
- Monitor the machine during initial long runs, especially if its behavior changes under sustained load.
There is no single temperature threshold established here for all laptop models. Consult the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific model rather than treating one temperature number as universal.
Warning signs that need attention
Investigate repeated thermal warnings, unexpected shutdowns, persistent abnormal fan behavior, or performance loss such as throttling. Check the model-specific troubleshooting guidance and ventilation requirements. A warm case by itself is not proof of damage, but repeated warnings or instability should not be ignored.

What does YouTube streaming require from the laptop and network?
YouTube’s computer live-streaming guidance describes webcam and encoder workflows. It recommends professional-grade encoders for higher-production events, while noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started. These are streaming setup recommendations, not specifications for laptop electricity use or safe operating temperatures.
For a more reliable broadcast, YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a reliable network, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring stream quality. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Prepare the encoder in advance and check stream integrity; a running laptop alone does not guarantee a stable stream.

Keep the laptop running, or move a prerecorded stream to the cloud?
