Cloud Streaming vs. a Spare PC for a 24/7 YouTube Channel

A spare PC offers direct control but needs continuous power, connectivity and maintenance. Cloud hosting moves the workload elsewhere; compare actual plan terms, costs and YouTube’s archive limit before choosing.

Short answer: a spare PC can run a 24/7 YouTube stream if you are willing to keep the computer, encoder and internet connection operating and maintain them. Cloud hosting moves that workload off your local machine, but the provider’s plan terms and recovery behavior matter. Neither approach is automatically cheaper or more reliable: the right choice depends on your existing hardware, electricity and internet costs, need for control, and tolerance for maintenance.

What changes when the stream runs on a PC or in the cloud?

Decision point Spare or dedicated PC Cloud-hosted service
Where the stream runs Streaming software runs on your computer, or you use a hardware encoder. YouTube supports both encoder types. YouTube’s encoder setup guide The provider runs the stream workload on its infrastructure; you depend on its supported workflow and current plan terms.
Control You control the machine, software and configuration. You use the provider’s workflow and are subject to its current features and plan conditions.
Ongoing cost Depends on whether you already own suitable hardware, its power use, and your local electricity and internet rates. No universal cost estimate is established. A recurring service fee may apply. Check the provider’s current price and any relevant limits or additional charges before committing.
Maintenance and interruptions You are responsible for keeping the PC, encoder and connection running. Recovery depends on how you configure your system. The workload is off your local PC, but that alone does not establish provider uptime or recovery behavior. Check the service’s current terms.
YouTube archives and replays YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Longer broadcasts need a deliberate archive and replay plan. Cloud hosting does not change YouTube’s archive guidance; plan the broadcast and replay workflow around the same platform behavior. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

When a spare PC makes sense

Choose a local setup when you have a suitable computer available, want direct control over the encoder and playback, and can keep the equipment powered and connected. YouTube recognizes software encoders running on computers as a valid way to stream, so a separate hardware encoder is not required by the setup guidance.

A dedicated machine, including a mini PC for live streaming, is an option if you do not want your everyday computer doing the work. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify minimum hardware requirements, so match any purchase to the encoder and video format you actually plan to use rather than assuming one particular specification is necessary.

Plan for the work a local 24/7 stream creates

  • Keep the computer, playback software and network connection running for as long as the broadcast is meant to continue.
  • Maintain the machine and encoder, and decide how you will respond if either the local system or internet connection stops working.
  • Test the complete setup before launch and monitor YouTube’s stream health while live.
  • Decide how to handle the archive and replay: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not a continuous broadcast longer than that.

When cloud hosting makes sense

Cloud hosting is a better fit when keeping a computer running at home is inconvenient, you need remote access to a provider’s workflow, or you prefer not to manage a local playback machine. It shifts the stream workload away from your PC; it does not eliminate the need to check the service’s supported stream type, current plan, price, limits and interruption-recovery details.

For example, OneStream Live documents a 24-hour YouTube streaming feature and says it requires its Enterprise plan. That is the provider’s stated plan condition, not evidence that every cloud service offers the same feature or that cloud hosting is inherently more reliable. Verify OneStream’s current eligibility, pricing and limits directly before choosing it. OneStream Live Help Center: How to Start 24/7 Live Streaming?

Set up and test the YouTube stream whichever route you choose

  1. Enable live streaming and choose an encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; the guide describes this as an initial setup delay, not a delay that repeats for every broadcast.
  2. Configure the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder or service where its workflow requires them. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in public or share it unnecessarily.
  3. Choose a quality your connection can sustain. YouTube advises selecting a reliable quality for your internet connection rather than assuming the highest setting will work. For one specific example, YouTube lists 1080p at 60 fps with a recommended bitrate range of 4–10 Mbps and a maximum of 12 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee about your PC or network. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
  4. Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted connection to Google’s servers. Confirm that your encoder or provider supports the recommended connection.
  5. Run a representative test before going live. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. Check that playback, sound, stream health and the network path hold up under those conditions.
  6. Monitor stream health during the broadcast. Keep a plan for responding to a problem, whether the encoder runs on a local computer or through a hosted workflow.

Plan archives for a broadcast longer than 12 hours

YouTube’s encoder guide says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” It does not promise automatic archiving for a continuous broadcast that exceeds 12 hours. Decide before launch whether to break the broadcast into sessions or use a separate recording and replay workflow, and check the resulting archive rather than assuming a 24/7 live session will leave a complete replay. Compare costs using your actual setup

A useful comparison starts with the costs you will actually incur, not a generic claim that a PC or cloud service is cheaper.

  • For a PC: account for whether you already own a suitable machine, its power use, your electricity tariff, internet costs and the time you are willing to spend maintaining it.
  • For cloud hosting: check the current subscription price, the plan that includes the needed 24/7 workflow, and any applicable storage, bandwidth or other charges.
  • For either choice: include the practical cost of interruptions and the amount of oversight you want to provide. The cited information does not establish a universal cost or reliability winner.

Common decision mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a cloud service is automatically reliable: cloud hosting moves the workload, but verify the provider’s current recovery and uptime terms rather than inferring them.
  • Assuming a spare PC costs nothing: existing hardware may avoid a purchase, but electricity, connectivity and maintenance still matter.
  • Setting quality beyond the available connection: test at the intended resolution and frame rate, and use YouTube’s stream-health guidance.
  • Expecting a 24/7 broadcast to archive as one complete replay: YouTube’s automatic archive statement is limited to streams under 12 hours.
  • Choosing a provider based only on a feature label: confirm that the current plan includes the duration and workflow you need. OneStream Live, for instance, states that its documented 24-hour YouTube feature requires Enterprise.
