First choose between one continuous broadcast and a sequence of daily events. Then plan the full-day rotation, clear music rights, test the broadcast, and assign someone to monitor interruptions and handoffs.
How do I schedule a 24/7 music stream on YouTube?
- Choose the broadcast pattern. Decide whether listeners will see one continuous feed or separate scheduled broadcasts. A continuous feed behaves more like a radio channel; separate events provide individual watch pages and reminders. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents a pattern in which a persistent 24/7 feed and a simultaneous event broadcast use the same incoming feed. - Build a 24-hour programming grid outside Studio. Set the time zone, then map every block to a playlist or track order, estimated duration, transition behavior, rights status, fallback content, and monitoring owner. YouTube Studio does not generate this rotation.
- Clear the music for the intended uses. Confirm rights for live transmission and any planned archive or replay. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with the label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream. Attribution, a consumer subscription, or owning a recording does not by itself establish livestream rights. YouTube for Artists
- Enable and test live streaming early. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Its music-channel guidance recommends enabling at least 24 hours before the event and testing an unlisted stream. Verify audio, visuals, metadata, stream key, and schedule before the public broadcast.
- Schedule the event in Studio if using scheduled broadcasts. Open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Reuse settings from a prior stream or create new ones, then set the title, description, thumbnail, privacy, and other applicable options. - Connect a playout system or encoder. Put YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the selected software or hardware encoder. Keep the key private and reset it if compromised. At broadcast time, start the encoder, check the preview in Live Control Room, and use Go live when the scheduled workflow prompts you.
- Monitor continuity and review interruptions. Check the audio, encoder connection, Live Control Room, chat if enabled, and the fallback or operator handoff. After any restart, confirm how the broadcast appears in Studio and whether a new event or watch page is needed.
How do I make a daily playlist schedule?
Use a planning sheet as the source of truth, not a list of vague dayparts. Assign a time zone and define exactly when each block begins and ends. For a documentary or music channel, blocks might be organized around mood, genre, decade, artist, or listening context; there is no universally best set of clock times in the available platform guidance.

Estimate durations from the actual playlist runtime, then check that every block fits its assigned window. Decide whether transitions should finish a track, fade at a fixed time, or start the next selection immediately. Specify the behavior in the playout workflow and test it in the unlisted rehearsal; a schedule document alone cannot enforce a transition.

Continuous feed or separate daily events?

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single 24-hour feed will appear as one complete archived video. Confirm the expected archive and restart behavior for the setup you choose. The help page also states limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; these limits matter if you intend to run simultaneous feeds. What encoder and presentation should I choose?
Software or hardware encoding
YouTube describes encoders as either software or hardware. Software is a valid choice; dedicated hardware is optional, not a prerequisite. Compare the cost and maintenance of the setup with how it will recover from power or network interruptions, and whether a separate device is justified for your operation. Either way, the encoder must receive the planned playlist output and send a stable feed to YouTube.

Horizontal or vertical video
Choose presentation based on where viewers are likely to watch and which YouTube features matter to the channel. YouTube’s current help guidance says vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed, while horizontal streams support features including live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls and clickable links. Check the current feature documentation and your account’s access before choosing a format: YouTube Help: vertical live streams.
Automated or staffed operation
Playlist automation can reduce routine track changes, but it does not transfer responsibility for rights, monitoring, failure recovery, or reviewing the daily grid. Name an operator or handoff owner even when playback is automated. YouTube’s scheduling feature is not a guarantee of unattended playout.

What should I test before going public?
- Confirm the account can go live early enough for first-time enablement; YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Run an unlisted rehearsal at least 24 hours ahead where practical, as recommended by YouTube for Artists.
- Listen for gaps, clipping, unexpected silence, and abrupt playlist transitions; verify the intended visual and metadata.
- Confirm the correct stream key and destination, and keep the key out of public documents or chat.
- Simulate a missing playlist item or interrupted connection so the operator knows what happens and which fallback to use.
- Verify who checks the feed and who takes over during overnight hours or a handoff.
- Confirm archive expectations separately from the live schedule, especially for a feed intended to run longer than 12 hours.
