How to pin a membership message in YouTube Live chat
- Start or open a YouTube live stream or Premiere and find its live-chat window.
- Post a brief membership invitation. Keep it within YouTube’s 200-character live-chat limit and leave out URLs; YouTube says URLs are not allowed in Live Chat. YouTube Help: Live chat
- Find your message in the chat, open More, and choose Pin. You can pin a message you wrote yourself.
- To change the promotion, pin a different message; it replaces the existing pin. To remove the pin, open the pinned message’s More menu and select Unpin.
YouTube’s desktop instructions describe pinning from the chat window, and its mobile live-chat flow also uses More and Pin. Labels and placement can change, so look for the message’s menu in the chat view you are using. YouTube Help: Pin messages
What to write in the pinned message
Make the next step clear without relying on a link in chat. For example: “Want member-only perks? Visit my channel and tap Join to see the membership options.” This is suggested wording, not official YouTube copy.
To share a membership destination, YouTube recommends adding /join to the end of your channel URL and using that link in eligible placements such as video descriptions, cards, end screens, community posts, and other social channels. Live Chat is not listed as an allowed URL placement, and YouTube’s live-chat guidance says URLs are not allowed there. Why some viewers may not see Join
A pinned invitation cannot make memberships available where YouTube does not show the feature. YouTube says the Join button may be missing because memberships are not enabled, the viewer is in an unsupported country or region, the video is Made for Kids, or the button is unavailable on that platform or watch page. If Join is missing on a watch page, YouTube suggests trying the channel homepage or the channel’s /join link. YouTube Help: Promote your YouTube channel’s memberships program
Do not confuse a pinned promotion with members-only chat
A creator-pinned message is a manual promotion that viewers can see in the chat. Members-only live chat is a separate Studio setting: it limits who can send messages while the stream itself can remain public. You do not need to enable members-only chat to promote memberships; turning it on changes who may participate. YouTube Help: Use members-only chat

YouTube also automatically highlights a new member during a stream: a bright green new-member message appears, and the member’s profile picture is pinned at the top of chat for five minutes.
