To create a seamless loop for YouTube Live, edit and export a video whose final picture and sound transition naturally into its opening, then play it on repeat in an encoder such as OBS Studio. In OBS, add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop. That setting restarts playback; it cannot fix a visible jump, flash, silence, or audio click in the edit.
1. Edit the end-to-start seam
Choose an ending that can flow back into the opening. For continuous music or ambience, check that the movement, timing, and audio level at the end connect naturally to the beginning. The goal is to make the restart unobtrusive; a loop checkbox does not blend two mismatched ends.
Review the exported file
Watch the actual exported file across its final-to-first transition before setting up the broadcast. Do not rely only on the editor timeline: the export’s encoding and frame timing can affect how the boundary plays.
2. Set up looping in OBS Studio
- Open the OBS scene that will carry the video.
- In the Sources dock, add a Media Source.
- Select the exported local video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Play the source and watch and listen through at least one restart. If the transition is jarring, revise the edit and export again.
OBS documents common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. For a sequence of files rather than one repeating file, use a VLC Video source and its playlist looping option; VLC must be installed. The OBS guide explains the Media Source settings at OBS Project: Media Sources.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service, and enter the connection details. Treat the stream key as a password; do not share it or show it in a recording.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest when configuring a custom server connection, if that option is available in your workflow.
- Start the encoder connection, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check current eligibility and setup details in YouTube’s guide to going live.
4. Choose encoder settings for your connection
Bitrate depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and reliable upload bandwidth available. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its example H.264 bitrates are:

| Output format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s technical recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality. Pick a profile the connection can sustain, and consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for other codecs and resolutions. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity with about 20% headroom. A higher setting is not automatically better if the connection cannot carry it reliably; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
5. Test and monitor the broadcast
- Test with audio and movement similar to what the intended stream will contain.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, then monitor audio, video, and stream health while broadcasting.
- Confirm that the stream is reachable on the channel’s watch page and on mobile devices.
- If you need a backup, verify that any local recording is being created and growing as expected.
A successful local loop does not prove that the internet connection or encoder stream is healthy. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and streaming tips cover setup and monitoring considerations.

6. Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube may automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends recording a local backup rather than relying on the automatic archive. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream archiving information and YouTube’s DVR guidance.
7. Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A jump, flash, silence, or click at the restart | The file’s ending and opening do not connect cleanly. | Review the exported file across the boundary, adjust the edit, and export again. OBS repeats playback but does not repair the seam. |
| The video stops instead of repeating | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source, or the wrong source is playing. | Open that source’s properties and confirm Loop is enabled. |
| A playlist source is unavailable | The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. | Install VLC or use a single-file Media Source if one repeating video is all you need. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Connection details may be wrong, the stream key may have changed, or the channel may not be eligible to live stream. | Recheck the Live Control Room URL and key, and verify channel eligibility and restrictions. |
| The stream buffers or loses health | The total bitrate may be too high for reliable upload bandwidth, or the network may be disrupted. | Check stream health and available upload capacity, reduce the output profile or bitrate if needed, and preserve the recommended headroom. |
| No archive appears after a very long stream | A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured automatically. | Use and verify a local recording backup; do not rely on unlimited automatic archiving or rewind. |
