There is no YouTube-prescribed number of videos for a 24/7 playlist. Choose how many hours of unique programming you want before the playlist repeats, divide that runtime by the videos’ average length, and round up. For example, a six-hour cycle made from videos averaging eight minutes needs 45 videos. That is a planning calculation, not a YouTube recommendation.
Calculate the number from your target repeat interval
Start with the time you want viewers to watch before encountering the same material again. Then use:
Video count = desired unique-playlist runtime ÷ average video duration
Keep the units consistent. In minutes, the calculation is:

Video count = (target hours × 60) ÷ average video minutes
| Target unique runtime | Average video length | Calculation | Approximate count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 hours (360 minutes) | 8 minutes | 360 ÷ 8 | 45 videos |
| 24 hours (1,440 minutes) | 8 minutes | 1,440 ÷ 8 | 180 videos |
These are arithmetic examples based on the stated runtimes. They are not YouTube benchmarks or recommended counts.

For videos of mixed lengths
Use the actual runtime of the videos you plan to include. Add their durations to find the playlist’s real cycle length; an average is useful for estimating a count, but the sum gives the exact total for a fixed selection. If the target is six hours and the selected videos total five hours and 40 minutes, add enough distinct runtime to reach the interval you want.
Choose a repeat interval that fits the programming
A shorter cycle requires fewer videos but brings repeats around sooner. A longer cycle takes more unique runtime and may suit a channel where viewers are likely to tune in for extended periods. There is no source-backed universal interval: how much repetition is acceptable depends on the channel, its audience and the material.

For documentary programming, consider whether a repeat feels natural to someone who joins midway through a cycle, and whether adjacent or near-duplicate edits count as meaningfully different viewing. That is an editorial judgment, not a platform rule. Decide what should count as a meaningful repeat before treating every file as unique programming.
Set playlist repeat separately from a livestream
A playlist that repeats and a live broadcast are different setups. YouTube provides a playlist repeat control; its documented encoder setup is one method for sending a live broadcast. If you want prerecorded videos to appear as a continuous live feed, the broadcast setup—not simply the playlist’s video count—determines how that material is sent live. The number of videos does not by itself make a stream live. YouTube Help explains how to play a video or playlist on repeat, and its encoder guidance covers live-stream setup.

Choose based on what viewers need
- Repeating playlist: appropriate when continuous playlist playback is enough and a live broadcast experience is not required.
- Continuous livestream: relevant when you specifically want a live broadcast with its associated stream controls or viewer experience. Plan how it will be sent and monitored.
Neither approach is universally better. Consider whether live chat or stream controls matter, how you will monitor the output, and whether archive and rewind behavior are important.

YouTube Help says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are caveats about the broadcast’s duration, not playlist-size limits. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will provide a complete replay or full rewind. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and its DVR guidance.

If you need a dependable record of the programming, plan local recordings or another backup rather than relying only on the livestream archive. YouTube’s live-streaming operational checklist recommends monitoring audio and video, checking local archive files, confirming the event is accessible on channel and watch pages and mobile devices, and leaving bandwidth headroom.
