Use OBS Studio to stream a prerecorded video from a spare PC: add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop, or use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist. Connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast, set a reliable output, and test it before leaving the computer to run. The PC must stay powered on and connected to the internet for the local stream to continue.
Before you set up the stream
- Enable YouTube Live early. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day you intend to go live. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to set up or schedule a broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Choose your video or playlist. Check that each file plays correctly and that its audio and picture are suitable for continuous playback. OBS supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; supported audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Format support does not guarantee that every file will play correctly in every installation.
- Check rights and YouTube rules. Use video, music, images, and other material you have permission to stream. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules. If you hope to monetize, eligibility and monetization decisions are separate from the technical ability to stream; do not assume that looping a video makes it original or eligible.
- Plan for continuous operation. A local setup depends on the PC, its power, OBS, and the internet connection remaining available. Test the full arrangement rather than assuming a spare computer is ready for 24/7 use.
Set up OBS for one video or a playlist
Option 1: Loop one video with Media Source
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you intend to use, or create a new scene.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, give it a clear name, and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. Confirm the video appears in the preview, then adjust its fit in the canvas if necessary.
- Check playback from beginning to end, including the transition when the file reaches its end and starts again. Listen for unexpected silence or audio that cuts off.
OBS documents Media Source support for multiple video and audio formats in its Media Sources guide. The file is played from the computer, so keep it available at the same location while streaming.
Option 2: Play a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and use its media playlist controls to add the files in the intended order.
- Choose whether the playlist should loop or shuffle, according to how you want the stream to run.
- Test the playlist through multiple transitions. Verify the files play, the order is right, and the audio levels are consistent.
OBS describes the VLC Video source and its playlist controls in the same Media Sources guide. A single Media Source is simpler for one looping file; VLC Video is useful when you need a playlist, loop, or shuffle behavior.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Set up a new broadcast or select a scheduled broadcast, following the current YouTube workflow.
- In the broadcast’s stream setup, locate the stream key and server information. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream information provided by YouTube. The exact options can vary with OBS and YouTube interface updates; follow the values shown for your broadcast.
- Treat the stream key as sensitive access information. Do not share it, publish it, or show it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings.
- Start streaming from OBS, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the feed. Start the public broadcast from YouTube when the preview and stream status are ready.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the encoder workflow. A stream key connects your encoder to the broadcast; it does not grant permission to use the content in your video.

Set output quality and test the stream
Choose settings that the spare PC can encode and the internet connection can upload consistently. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate encoding. Its encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for supported codecs and the recommended settings applicable to your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the encoder and bitrate for the selected streaming output. Use constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube recommends, and avoid choosing a bitrate beyond what your sustained upload connection can support.
- In Settings > Video, choose an output resolution and frame rate that are appropriate for the source and your computer. Higher settings require more encoding and upload capacity; a stable stream matters more than selecting the highest available setting.
- In the encoder’s keyframe setting, use 2 seconds and do not exceed 4 seconds, in line with YouTube’s guidance. Select RTMPS where available in the stream connection settings.
- Run an upload speed test and test the stream at the intended settings. Watch OBS’s status and YouTube’s preview for dropped frames, buffering, or connection interruptions before relying on the setup.
YouTube lists HLS as a separate ingestion option for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP, with additional transport and segment requirements. It is not necessary for a basic SDR prerecorded loop; use the standard encoder workflow unless your format or YouTube’s guidance calls for HLS. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Keep the spare PC and connection ready
- Prefer Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired network connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. OBS does not prescribe a cable category or brand. See its network connection stability guide.
- Prevent interruptions. The computer must remain on, OBS must keep running, and the local media files must stay accessible. Check your operating system’s power settings so the PC does not sleep during the stream. Exact settings differ by operating system, and power-loss or crash recovery is not guaranteed by OBS or YouTube.
- Watch for heat and resource problems. A long test can help reveal whether the particular computer remains stable under encoding load. No general 24/7 suitability is established for an unspecified spare PC, so monitor its temperature and OBS performance during testing.
- Have a recovery plan. If OBS stops, the PC loses power, or the internet disconnects, the local feed may end. Know how to restart OBS and reconnect it to the active broadcast. Neither YouTube nor OBS promises uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Confirm OBS is connected to the correct YouTube broadcast and that its stream key and server information match the current Live Control Room setup. Verify the network connection, then restart the encoder connection if needed. |
| Dropped frames or repeated disconnects | Check network stability first; use Ethernet if possible. Reduce the configured bitrate if the sustained upload connection cannot support it, and check drivers and the network path to the ingest server. OBS discusses these checks in its network stability guidance. |
| The video does not loop or a playlist stops | For a single file, confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, confirm the VLC Video source is being used, VLC is installed in the matching 64-bit or 32-bit version, and playlist loop settings are enabled. |
| A file is missing, black, or silent | Check that the source points to the correct local file and that the file plays in the installed software. Re-select the file if it was moved, test audio output, and verify the format in OBS’s Media Sources guide. |
| The stream stops after the PC is unattended | Check whether the computer slept, restarted, lost power, or OBS closed. Review power settings and system stability, and test the intended unattended configuration. Local streaming depends on the PC continuing to run. |
Local PC or cloud streaming?
OBS on a spare PC gives you local control over files and settings, but the computer and its internet connection must stay in operation. YouTube also identifies cloud-based tools as an option for 24/7 prerecorded streams; suitability depends on the provider and service, and no approach guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded prerecorded videos live: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
