FFmpeg Dropped Frames Streaming to YouTube: What to Check

FFmpeg’s dropped-frame counter does not automatically mean a bad internet connection. Check synchronization, encoding speed, upload bitrate, and YouTube stream health in order.

If FFmpeg reports dropped frames while streaming to YouTube, do not assume your internet connection is at fault. The counter can reflect FFmpeg’s frame-rate synchronization, timestamps, or encoding performance; a separate problem may affect delivery to YouTube or playback for viewers. Check the local output and FFmpeg log first, then test upload capacity and YouTube’s stream health.

First, identify which part of the stream is dropping frames

A live stream passes through several stages: the source, FFmpeg’s frame handling and encoding, the outbound connection, YouTube ingestion, and the viewer’s player. A warning at one stage is not proof of a fault at another. In particular, FFmpeg’s drop counter is not the same thing as YouTube’s stream-health warnings or viewer-side buffering.

Use these checks to locate the problem before changing settings:

  • Local recording or encoder preview is also bad: investigate the source, timestamps, frame-rate conversion, encoder errors, and machine load.
  • Local output looks and sounds good, but YouTube reports problems: investigate outbound upload stability, bitrate, and YouTube ingest messages.
  • YouTube reports a healthy stream but viewers see buffering: consider viewer-side playback conditions and latency; buffering is not necessarily an FFmpeg encoding drop.

FFmpeg documents that constant-frame-rate output may duplicate or drop frames to reach the requested rate. YouTube likewise advises checking encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive before treating a problem as a connection fault. See the FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guide.

Read the FFmpeg log before editing the command

Watch the progress line over time

Note fps, speed, dup, drop, output bitrate, and any input or timestamp warnings. A single snapshot may not show whether performance is deteriorating; compare values across the period when the stream is misbehaving.

  • speed persistently below real time: FFmpeg may not be processing quickly enough for a live output.
  • fps falling or drop rising: inspect frame-rate conversion, timestamps, input cadence, and encoding load. The counter alone does not identify the cause.
  • Timestamp or input warnings: check the source and how its timestamps and frame rate are being interpreted before forcing a new output rate.
  • Output bitrate below target or fluctuating: examine encoder settings and load; then compare the target with stable upload capacity.

Interpret those fields alongside the complete log and the command you actually ran. FFmpeg’s synchronization options have different behavior, and the documentation should be checked against the installed build’s version.

Understand what frame-rate options do

FFmpeg’s output -r can duplicate or drop frames before encoding to reach a constant output rate. The -fps_mode option also affects synchronization: cfr targets a constant rate and may duplicate or drop frames, passthrough passes frames with their timestamps, and vfr may drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. The manual also documents a frame-drop threshold. These choices are not interchangeable fixes; first compare the source’s timestamps and frame rate with the output settings, then change only what the evidence supports. See FFmpeg’s option documentation.

Use -re only for the right input

When reading a file to simulate a live source, -re reads input at its native frame rate and can pace file input in real time. Do not add it blindly to every command. FFmpeg warns that using a low read rate on an actual capture device or live input can cause packet loss.

Check whether the encoder can keep up

If FFmpeg cannot sustain real-time processing, lowering the upload bitrate alone may not solve the issue. Check for sustained speed below real time, falling frame rate, rising CPU load, encoder errors, and defects in a local recording or encoder preview. YouTube specifically recommends checking CPU load and the local archive when the encoder output looks or sounds wrong.

  1. Inspect the local recording or archive for the same stutter, missing frames, audio problems, or image defects reported on YouTube.
  2. Check the machine’s CPU load and FFmpeg’s encoder errors during the affected interval.
  3. Update the encoder software, as YouTube advises, and repeat a controlled test.
  4. If the evidence points to encoding capacity, reduce workload or output complexity for the test, changing one factor at a time.

If the local archive is healthy while YouTube’s received stream is not, shift attention to outbound delivery rather than assuming the computer needs an upgrade. YouTube’s guidance is at its troubleshooting page.

Match bitrate and pacing to a stable upload connection

YouTube recommends choosing settings the connection can reliably sustain, running a speed test, and testing before the event. Its published H.264 ingestion recommendations include the following figures; they are targets for the listed modes, not a guarantee that a particular connection can maintain them:

Output mode YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p30 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current listed H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026. The official table can change, so consult YouTube’s encoder settings for current guidance. Compare your stream’s target with stable upload performance, not just a best-case speed-test result; leave practical room for variation and other network traffic. That headroom is a troubleshooting precaution, not a numeric YouTube rule.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe every 2 seconds, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings support up to 60 fps. Verify the output’s actual rate control and keyframe interval, but do not treat any of these settings as a universal remedy for frame drops. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are at its settings page.

If local output is clean but the stream has delivery problems, test outbound connectivity. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if connection testing identifies a problem. A network change cannot fix incorrect FFmpeg synchronization, a struggling encoder, or an ISP-side fault that it does not address.

Verify YouTube ingest and test under realistic conditions

  1. For a stream that will not start, confirm that FFmpeg is sending to the intended destination with the current YouTube stream key.
  2. Read the messages in YouTube Live Control Room rather than inferring YouTube health from FFmpeg’s drop count.
  3. Run a test with audio and motion similar to the actual stream; a static or silent test may not reveal issues that appear with the real material.
  4. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. During the test, monitor stream health and audio/video quality.
  5. Check that the local archive is intact and continues to grow while streaming.

YouTube recommends these preflight and monitoring practices in its live streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance. Its encoder settings page also says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Keep latency separate from frame-drop diagnosis

Latency is the delay between capture and display, not an FFmpeg drop counter. Lower latency means less read-ahead buffer in the player, which can make viewers more likely to experience buffering; network congestion can also affect a live stream. YouTube positions low latency for limited interaction and ultra-low latency for real-time interaction. Those modes do not support 4K, so choosing lower latency is a trade-off, not a general cure for frame drops. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe Likely area to inspect first Next check
Local recording and YouTube both stutter Input, timestamps, frame-rate conversion, or encoding load Review FFmpeg’s log and synchronization options; check CPU load and encoder errors.
Local recording is clean, but YouTube shows stream-health issues Outbound connection, bitrate, or ingest Compare target bitrate with stable upload capacity and read Live Control Room messages.
FFmpeg reports drops after forcing an output frame rate Frame synchronization behavior Compare source and output rates; confirm what -r or -fps_mode is doing before changing it.
File-based input is not paced like a live source Input pacing Consider whether -re is appropriate for that file input; do not apply it blindly to a live capture.
Viewers buffer while the encoder and ingest appear healthy Player buffering, latency, or network conditions Assess latency trade-offs separately from FFmpeg’s frame synchronization.
Stream fails to start Destination or stream key Verify the current key and destination, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room messages.

Or let it run in the cloud
