In OBS Studio, open Settings > Advanced, find Automatic Reconnect (also labeled Automatically Reconnect in some versions), and enable it. This makes OBS retry its connection after an interruption; it does not fix an unstable internet connection or guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast is still available.
Turn on Automatic Reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Select Advanced.
- Find the Automatic Reconnect or Automatically Reconnect section and enable it. The exact label can vary by OBS version.
- If your version shows retry delay or retry-count fields, avoid assuming a particular value is best. The available guidance confirms the setting’s location but does not establish current defaults or ideal values.
- Select Apply or OK if shown to save the change.
OBS’s official overview places the control in Advanced settings, while an OBS community response gives the path as Settings > Advanced > Automatically Reconnect > Enable (OBS overview; OBS community response).
Check the YouTube broadcast settings too
OBS reconnect and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle settings are separate. For a scheduled broadcast, open its settings in YouTube Studio and review Auto-start and Auto-stop. YouTube documents these as controls for starting and stopping a broadcast from the encoder (YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream).
An OBS integration guide warns that enabling YouTube Auto-stop can prevent reconnecting to the same broadcast later. That warning comes from a community resource guide, not the current YouTube Help explanation, so check the behavior in the current Live Control Room before relying on a scheduled broadcast for a long-running event (OBS YouTube Streaming Guide).

Test reconnection before an important stream
- Set up a temporary or private test broadcast and confirm OBS connects and the preview appears in YouTube Studio.
- Briefly interrupt the connection in a controlled test, then watch OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room to see whether OBS retries and whether the broadcast remains available.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health information and confirm video and audio return before using the setup for a documentary premiere, interview, or other event.
YouTube advises testing encoder setups, previewing the stream, and monitoring stream health (YouTube Help: Live streaming tips). A test is especially useful when the broadcast uses Auto-stop or the event depends on unattended recovery.
If OBS keeps disconnecting
Automatic Reconnect controls whether OBS retries; it cannot make an unreliable connection stable or increase available upload capacity. OBS explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

- Dropped frames or repeated retries: Try a different server, lower the video bitrate, and check network settings. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality, but it does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
- Streaming over Wi-Fi: OBS recommends trying a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. An Ethernet cable is a troubleshooting option, not a requirement for enabling reconnect, and it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream (OBS troubleshooting guidance).
- Connection problems continue: Check whether a VPN, security software, bundled network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, or router/modem connectivity is affecting the stream. Restarting modem/router equipment may help; if the cause remains unclear, contact your ISP rather than replacing network hardware as a first step.
- OBS reconnects but the broadcast does not resume: Confirm in YouTube Studio that the scheduled broadcast is still available to receive the encoder, and recheck its Auto-stop behavior in the current Live Control Room.
