How Often Should FFmpeg Send Keyframes to YouTube Live?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set FFmpeg to send a keyframe about every two seconds when streaming live to YouTube. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. In FFmpeg, -g sets the maximum distance between keyframes, but confirm that your chosen encoder actually emits them on schedule.

Recommended keyframe interval for YouTube Live

YouTube Help recommends a two-second keyframe frequency for live streams and says not to exceed four seconds. Its live troubleshooting guidance likewise asks for keyframes every two seconds and says they should be four seconds or less apart. YouTube’s live encoder settings and live-stream troubleshooting guidance provide these recommendations; the pages reviewed do not state a publication year.

The two-second interval is the target, not the maximum. Use the actual output frame rate to convert the interval to frames:

Output frame rate Two-second target Four-second maximum
30 fps 60 frames 120 frames
60 fps 120 frames 240 frames

YouTube explicitly gives 60 frames at 30 fps. The other entries are the corresponding arithmetic at the stated frame rates. If your output frame rate changes, recalculate the frame count rather than reusing the old GOP value.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set the GOP size in FFmpeg

For an encoder that interprets -g as its maximum GOP size, use the frame count for a two-second interval. FFmpeg documentation defines GOP size as the maximum distance between keyframes. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes encoder options, including libx264 keyframe interval settings.

  • At 30 fps, start with -g 60.
  • At 60 fps, start with -g 120.

These are starting points, not a guarantee that the outgoing stream has the desired cadence. Encoder-specific options and behavior can vary by encoder and FFmpeg build. Check the settings for the encoder you selected, and verify the actual emitted stream rather than assuming that the command-line value proves compliance.

Use a closed GOP when supported

YouTube says its live-stream pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. If your selected encoder supports a closed-GOP setting, enable it and verify that the encoder is applying it. The exact option is encoder-specific, so there is no single safe flag to prescribe for every FFmpeg build.

Check the rest of the live encoding setup

Keyframe timing is one part of ingest configuration. YouTube’s live encoder settings list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, support frame rates up to 60 fps, recommend CBR for live encoder bitrate, and give bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate. Use the bitrate guidance for your chosen output rather than treating GOP size as a substitute for a compatible encoder configuration. See YouTube’s current live encoder settings.

Test with footage that has representative movement and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators. A stream can have the intended -g value yet still trigger a keyframe warning if the actual output cadence differs.

Do not mix up live and upload settings

The two-second recommendation is for live ingest. YouTube’s separate upload-encoding guidance says “GOP of half the frame rate”; that upload recommendation is not a replacement for the live-stream interval. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance covers the separate upload context.

Troubleshoot a keyframe warning

  • YouTube says keyframes are too far apart: Set the interval to two seconds using the actual output frame rate. For example, target 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps; do not exceed four seconds.
  • The warning persists despite the expected -g value: Check the selected encoder’s documentation and configuration. -g sets a maximum distance, and encoder-specific behavior can affect the actual cadence. Inspect or otherwise verify the outgoing stream.
  • The warning appears after a frame-rate change: Recalculate the GOP size from the new output rate. A frame count that matched two seconds before may no longer do so.
  • Transcoding quality is not optimal: Confirm that the encoder supports a closed GOP and that it is enabled; YouTube says its live pipeline requires closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
  • Other ingest problems occur: Check codec, frame rate, bitrate, and YouTube’s stream health guidance as well as keyframe timing.
