Sometimes—but a Content ID claim is not a copyright strike. A claim can affect the archived livestream, including whether it can be viewed or monetized. During a live broadcast, YouTube may warn you, interrupt the stream or terminate it if it detects third-party content that remains in the broadcast. A valid copyright removal request is different: it can remove the video and give your channel a strike.
What can happen while a livestream is live?
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A stream can also be terminated if it receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
This live enforcement is separate from a Content ID claim on an archive. YouTube says it makes Content ID claims after a livestream ends if the creator chooses to archive it. A live interruption and a later claim can therefore happen at different stages.
If you have a license
Ask the rights holder to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube cautions that a livestream can still be interrupted if your channel is not allowlisted, even if you have a license or restrict the broadcast to territories where you hold the necessary rights.

Content ID claim versus copyright strike
| Outcome | What it means | Possible effect |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | YouTube’s matching system identifies material claimed by a rights holder. | Depending on the rights holder’s policy, the video may be blocked, monetized through ads (sometimes with revenue sharing), or tracked. Monetization or tracking generally leaves it viewable, but policies can vary by geography. |
| Copyright removal request and strike | A rights holder submits a legal request to remove content. If YouTube determines the request appears valid, it removes the video and applies a copyright strike to the uploader’s channel. | This is a channel-level consequence, unlike an ordinary Content ID claim. A strike may affect monetization or live-stream access. |
An ordinary claim does not mean your channel has received a strike. YouTube’s explanations of claims and removal requests are in its Content ID claim guidance and copyright strike guidance.
How a strike can affect the channel
YouTube says most features and programs remain available after a strike, but strikes may affect a channel’s ability to monetize. If a strike is received on an active or archived livestream, live-stream access may be disabled. Three strikes make a channel subject to termination. Deleting the video does not clear a strike. A claimed video can also be blocked or monetized by the claimant without a strike. Separately, YouTube says copyright issues—including strikes and videos with visuals matching third-party content—may contribute to channel monetization suspension. That does not mean every claim automatically removes a creator from monetization. YouTube channel monetization policies.
When and how to dispute a claim
YouTube identifies three possible grounds to dispute a Content ID claim: you have the necessary rights, your use qualifies for a copyright exception, or the match is mistaken. Giving credit, owning a copy of the material, or choosing not to monetize are not by themselves valid grounds. YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. If the claim is rejected, you may be eligible to appeal. Dispute only when you are confident you have the rights or another valid basis; YouTube suggests seeking legal advice if you are unsure. Understand the appeal risk
After an appeal, the claimant has seven days to respond. They may release the claim, let it expire, or submit a copyright removal request. A valid removal request can remove the video and apply a strike. If the request is scheduled after an appeal, YouTube gives the creator seven days to cancel the appeal before removal and a strike. An appeal is therefore not just another routine review step; it can bring the legal removal process into play. YouTube Help: Appeal a Content ID claim.
What happens to revenue during a dispute?
If both you and the claimant want to monetize the video, revenue may continue to accrue but is held separately during the dispute and paid to the appropriate party after resolution. If you dispute within five days of the claim, YouTube holds revenue from the claim date; if you dispute later, it holds revenue from the date of the dispute. While an active claim is disputed or appealed, the video’s revenue data will not appear in YouTube Analytics. YouTube Help: Monetization during Content ID disputes.

Keep a pre-recorded stream running without changing the copyright rules
For a channel that loops uploaded videos, cloud delivery can remove the need to keep a home computer running, but it does not grant rights to music, footage or other third-party material. You remain responsible for using material you have rights to stream and for responding appropriately to claims.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube, not from a live camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
