OBS can loop one file or cycle through a VLC playlist, but the computer running OBS and its internet connection must remain available. What “YouTube Live playlist vs. OBS” really means
They are not two interchangeable ways to play a playlist. YouTube Live is the destination, and an encoder supplies the live video feed. OBS can act as that encoder, taking media files from your computer and sending them to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
A YouTube playlist of ordinary uploaded videos is different: it does not independently feed those files into an encoder and turn them into a continuous live broadcast. If the requirement is a YouTube Live stream made from promotional videos, you need an active encoder such as OBS or a cloud playout service.

Check YouTube access before setting up
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the moment the store needs the display. See Get started with live streaming and YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Set up a looping promo stream with OBS
- Prepare the channel. Verify the channel, confirm it has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Add a single repeating video. In OBS, add a Media Source to a scene, select the local promo file, and enable its Loop control. OBS documents media-source behavior in Media Sources.
- Or add multiple videos. Install VLC, then add a VLC Video source and select the playlist files. Enable Loop Playlist; choose shuffle only if you do not need a fixed order. VLC must be installed for this source.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm the video is framed correctly and that its audio is appropriate for the intended display. OBS documentation explains adding media to a scene, but it does not prescribe a store layout or audio level.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder settings in OBS. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start and monitor the feed. Start streaming in OBS and check YouTube’s stream health. The computer, power, and network are part of this setup; plan who will notice an interruption and how they will restore the feed.
- Use media you have the rights to show. Include music, footage, logos, and other material only when you have the necessary rights for this use.
Copyright, archiving, and store-display considerations
Copyright checks can interrupt a live feed
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, a placeholder may replace the stream; if the content remains, the broadcast can be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A licence alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder must add the channel to its Content ID allowlist for licensed third-party content to avoid this issue. Do not assume every continuous broadcast will be archived
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited encoder guidance does not establish the same archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Confirm that a public live stream is suitable for in-store playback
The platform guidance cited here explains encoder setup and live-stream rules; it does not establish whether your specific public YouTube Live stream and in-store playback arrangement are permitted or suitable as a commercial display. Check current YouTube terms and the requirements that apply to your store and playback setup before relying on it.

Cost and operational trade-offs
OBS avoids a separate cloud playout subscription, but it makes the local computer, power, and internet connection operational dependencies. The available OBS and YouTube documentation does not specify a computer configuration guaranteed to handle a particular resolution, media format, or continuous uptime. Choose hardware for your actual workload and test the full setup; do not assume an arbitrary low-cost computer will run it reliably.
