Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most YouTube Live streams, set bitrate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s live recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube does not specify one required H.264 profile or a universal encoder preset; its live guidance instead lists advanced properties such as progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
Quick settings for YouTube Live
| Setting | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| H.264 profile | YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a required profile |
| Encoder preset | YouTube does not specify a universal encoder preset; choose one that meets the listed requirements and test it |
| Transport | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
These are live-ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder labels its controls the same way. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance is the reference for supported formats and settings.
Choose a bitrate for H.264
The values below are YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrates for H.264. The minimum is a lower bound in YouTube’s recommendation table; the recommended value is the suggested target. Pick a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably, and run a speed test before going live.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, use the corresponding codec rows in YouTube’s current official bitrate table. H.264 values should not be assumed to apply to those codecs. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video, with frame rates up to 60 fps; the source material, connection, HDR needs, and encoder controls all affect the sensible choice. The official guidance does not establish a universal quality ranking among the codecs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
CBR: choose the mode, then the bitrate
CBR means constant bitrate: the encoder aims to keep the stream’s video bitrate near the selected target. It is the bitrate mode YouTube lists for live encoding. CBR does not tell you what numeric bitrate to enter; select that separately using the codec, resolution, and frame rate table.
Keyframes: set a 2-second interval
Set the keyframe frequency or interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends this interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Encoder interfaces may express the setting in seconds or as a GOP/keyframe value; use the option that produces a two-second interval for your frame rate.

H.264 profile: do not confuse live with uploads
YouTube’s live encoder requirements do not name a required H.264 profile. They list other recommended advanced properties: progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Where your encoder exposes those controls, configure them to match YouTube’s live guidance.
YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings page specifies High Profile for uploaded files and includes upload-specific guidance such as variable bitrate. Those are upload recommendations, not evidence that High Profile or VBR is a YouTube Live requirement.

Encoder preset: there is no universal YouTube choice
A preset name generally belongs to a particular software or hardware encoder, and its meaning can vary by implementation. YouTube’s live guidance does not prescribe a universal preset or software-encoder speed setting. Choose an available preset that your system can run while meeting the stream requirements, then test the actual output rather than treating a preset label as a YouTube standard.
Other live settings that matter
Transport and video
- YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for transport.
- Use progressive scan and square pixels.
- For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709.
- For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265. AV1 is not supported for HDR.
Audio
- YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio codecs. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, only AAC is supported.
- Recommended audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Recommended audio bitrate: 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1.
Test before the event and monitor stream health
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, with audio and movement similar to the planned program. Check that the encoder connects, audio is present and in sync, the picture is stable, and YouTube reports healthy stream status. Keep an eye on stream health during the event so you can respond to dropped frames, connection problems, or configuration errors.

YouTube describes an encoder as computer software or a standalone hardware device. A hardware encoder is optional: software encoders are also supported. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the encoder-based setup and typical equipment.

- Connection or stream-health warnings: bitrate may be too high for the available upload connection, or the connection may be unstable. Run a speed test, select a sustainable bitrate from the table, and test again.
- Keyframe warning: change the interval to 2 seconds and make sure it does not exceed 4 seconds.
- Unclear profile or preset requirement: YouTube does not set a universal live profile or preset. Match the documented live properties, then validate the encoder output in a test.
- Following upload instructions for a live stream: keep High Profile and VBR guidance from the upload page in its upload context; configure live ingest using YouTube’s live settings instead.
- HDR with AV1: AV1 is not supported for HDR in YouTube’s RTMP(S) guidance. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265.
- No audio or incompatible surround sound: verify the encoder’s audio codec and sample rate. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder setup on a computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
