If your YouTube Live stream has video but no sound, first check whether the encoder itself is receiving and outputting audio. If its preview or local recording is silent, fix the source, mute state, or routing. If the encoder output has sound, inspect YouTube Live Control Room for ingestion errors and compare its preview with the local output. For a simple stereo baseline, send one AAC audio stream at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
Find where the audio disappears
Compare the audio at each stage rather than changing settings at random. Check the source and encoder output first, then a local archive if available, YouTube Live Control Room, and the public watch-page playback. The first point where sound is missing narrows the likely cause.
- Encoder source and mix: Listen to the encoder’s preview or output. Confirm the intended microphone, application audio, mixer, or other source is selected, active, unmuted, and routed into the stream mix. If this output is silent, correct the source or routing before changing YouTube settings. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide notes that poor sound can originate in the audio and video sources routed to the encoder.
- Local archive: If the encoder records a local copy, play it and check for sound. A silent archive points to a problem before YouTube ingestion, though it does not identify which source or routing control is responsible. YouTube also recommends verifying the archive file and that its size is growing. See its streaming tips.
- Live Control Room: Check the stream health indicator and read any ingestion errors. Look for messages about no audio, multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, incorrect sample rate or bitrate, or too many channels. Correct the named issue and check whether the message clears. YouTube’s live-stream error guide flags missing and multiple audio streams as problems.
- Preview and watch page: Compare YouTube’s preview with the encoder output, then check playback on the watch page. If the encoder is audible but YouTube is not, focus on the outgoing track configuration and ingestion messages. If only one viewer reports silence, their device or internet connection may be the issue; reports from viewers on different networks can point to the encoder. YouTube discusses both possibilities in its troubleshooting guidance.
Use a supported audio configuration
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio codecs. For a straightforward stereo stream, use one AAC audio stream at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Sending no audio track is an ingestion problem, and sending multiple audio streams can also cause problems.
| Configuration | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Stereo | One audio stream; AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 surround | AAC only; 48 kHz; 384 Kbps |
| Channels | The relevant ingestion guidance supports mono or stereo (one or two channels) and flags more than two channels. Follow any specific Live Control Room error for your setup. |
These settings come from YouTube’s encoder recommendations and ingestion error guidance. Encoder labels differ by version; look for controls named audio track, source, mixer, channel, sample rate, or bitrate.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check delivery and system health
If the encoder output contains sound and its audio configuration is supported, check CPU load, encoder errors, and the outbound connection. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you send both primary and backup streams, include both in that total before adding headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Retest before the event
- Run a private or unlisted test when appropriate, using audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Confirm the encoder output is audible and that the local archive plays with sound.
- Check Live Control Room preview and health messages, then verify watch-page playback.
- Monitor stream health and audio during the event. YouTube advises testing before going live in its encoder settings guidance.
- If the encoder’s output and settings appear correct but the issue persists, consider testing with a different encoder or report the problem to YouTube support.
Common symptoms and fixes
- Encoder preview and local archive are both silent: Check source selection, mute state, and routing into the stream mix.
- Encoder preview has sound, but the archive is silent: Check the encoder’s recording or output-track configuration as well as the stream mix.
- Local output has sound, but Live Control Room reports no audio: Confirm an audio track is actually being sent, then inspect its codec, sample rate, bitrate, and channel count against the dashboard message.
- Dashboard reports multiple audio streams or too many channels: Simplify the outgoing configuration to one audio stream and mono or stereo unless your specific setup’s YouTube guidance says otherwise.
- Only one viewer hears no sound: Ask them to check their playback device, volume, and connection. If viewers on different networks report the same problem, investigate the encoder and stream health.
- Audio is intermittent or the stream is unhealthy: Check CPU load and upload capacity; leave the recommended bandwidth headroom and monitor the health indicator.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded documentaries or other uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, so it is an alternative for scheduled, looping video—not a fix for a live encoder’s missing microphone or mixer audio. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
