For YouTube Live at 1080p, set your video bitrate according to both frame rate and codec: H.264 calls for 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps; AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) calls for 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. YouTube does not publish a separate 1080p live bitrate for India. What matters locally is whether your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate reliably, with spare capacity.
Recommended 1080p live bitrates
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists the following recommended video bitrates. These are encoder-to-YouTube ingestion settings, not recommendations for encoding a video file to upload later.
| Frame rate | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), recommended | H.264, recommended | AV1 or H.265, minimum | H.264, minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (undated guidance checked in 2026). Minimums are lower-end ingestion settings, not equivalent to the recommended targets. Select the row for your actual frame rate and the column for the codec your encoder is sending.
What changes for creators in India?
YouTube’s published live bitrate table does not give India-specific values. The same codec-and-frame-rate recommendations apply; the practical difference is the quality and consistency of the connection from your encoder to YouTube. A speed-test result for download speed does not establish that your upload can sustain a live stream.

Plan upload capacity with headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room in available upload bandwidth. As a practical minimum for planning, multiply the video bitrate by 1.2, then make additional allowance for audio and other traffic. For example, a 14 Mbps video stream needs at least 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity under that headroom rule, before accounting for audio or any backup stream. This is planning guidance, not a guarantee that a connection with that measured speed will remain stable.
If you enable a primary and backup stream, account for both streams’ bitrate in the total upload requirement. A shared home, office, or venue network can also leave less capacity for your encoder than a speed test suggests. YouTube’s streaming tips advise leaving room for upload bandwidth and note the effect of shared networks.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Use the codec supported by your encoder and workflow, then match the bitrate to the table above.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube allows a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Choose 30 or 60 according to the content and production, then use the matching bitrate recommendation.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced settings list 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Treat audio bitrate separately from video bitrate when estimating total network use.
For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream should use 14 Mbps video, with audio and network overhead considered separately. Do not set a 60 fps bitrate simply because the video canvas is 1080p; the actual frame rate is what determines the row.

Test before going live and monitor stream health
Before the broadcast
- Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in your encoder.
- Run a speed test that measures upload performance, and check that available upload capacity has YouTube’s recommended headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Run a test stream with movement and audio representative of the real program. Static slides alone may not expose issues that appear during motion.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages during the test; correct dropped-frame or connection warnings before the event.
During the broadcast
Keep monitoring stream health and the connection rather than assuming that a successful speed test guarantees an uninterrupted event. If the available upload rate fluctuates, reduce the outgoing bitrate or frame rate and test again; a bitrate your connection cannot sustain can cause instability.
Do not use upload-video settings for a live stream
YouTube’s separate upload encoding recommendations list 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates. Those numbers apply to uploaded video files, not live-stream ingestion. For a live broadcast, use the live encoder table above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the distinct upload guidance.

Latency is a separate choice
Bitrate controls how much encoded data the stream sends; latency describes the delay from capture to playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Choose the latency behavior for the interaction needs of the broadcast and check its effect in a test; it does not replace selecting the right encoder bitrate. YouTube explains the setting in Manage live stream settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common bitrate and connection problems
- Stream health warns about insufficient bitrate or dropped frames: Check whether the encoder’s video bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. Include audio, competing network use, and any backup stream in the total; lower the bitrate or frame rate if needed, then test again.
- The connection speed test looks adequate but the stream is unstable: Confirm that you tested upload rather than download, test close to broadcast time, and account for other devices using the same connection. YouTube recommends upload headroom because shared-network capacity can vary.
- The video looks poor despite a stable stream: Verify the encoder is sending the intended resolution, codec, frame rate, and recommended bitrate. Ensure the stream is not inadvertently using a minimum bitrate or a setting intended for uploaded files.
- The stream fails after enabling a backup: Recalculate capacity for the primary and backup bitrate together, then retest with the backup enabled.
- Viewers report buffering after lowering latency: Revisit the latency choice in YouTube’s stream settings; lower latency can increase playback buffering for viewers.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from configuring a live camera or encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo sends videos as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasting. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
