To keep a class timetable visible on a continuous YouTube livestream, add it as a graphic or display source in your encoder’s video scene. YouTube’s title, description, and scheduled start time are stream metadata; they do not put a timetable over the picture. Choose whether viewers need one always-on destination, separate watch pages for each class, or both, then plan how the schedule and stream will be maintained.
Choose how classes will appear on YouTube
The right format depends on where viewers should go and whether each class needs its own event page. A timetable can remain in the video in any of these models, provided the outgoing picture includes the schedule graphic.
| Model | Viewer destination | Useful when | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One continuous 24/7 broadcast | One always-available livestream | Viewers should find the channel in one place and see what is on now or next. | The operator must keep the program running and update the visible timetable as classes or times change. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a channel broadcasting a 24/7 feed. |
| Separate scheduled class streams | A distinct watch page for each class or event | Each class benefits from its own reminder, destination, or event-specific metadata. | Each broadcast must be scheduled and operated as its own event. YouTube Help explains how to schedule and share a stream. |
| Continuous feed plus separate event broadcasts | The ongoing feed plus a separate destination for a particular event | A class or interview needs its own event page while the general feed continues. | This adds operational or API complexity; do not assume every encoder has a one-button workflow for it. Google’s API documentation gives the example of a channel with a 24/7 feed creating a separate video for an interview during that broadcast. |
For a school or documentary education channel, decide first whether the timetable is an orientation aid for one continuous destination or whether viewers need a separate page and reminder for every class. Also settle how recordings and archives will be handled: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume a single longer continuous stream will produce a complete automatic archive. Check YouTube’s current guidance before relying on archive behavior.
Build the timetable viewers will see
Include the information needed to join at the right time
Put the day, local time zone, class name, and any break or “next class” information viewers need on the graphic. This is practical editorial guidance, not a YouTube-required timetable format. If viewers may be in different time zones, label the schedule’s time zone explicitly rather than leaving times ambiguous.

Add it to the encoder scene
Create the timetable as an image or use a browser or display source, then position that source within the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, this means composing the timetable with the other sources in the scene; the available source types and exact interface labels can vary by version and setup. An INFLIBNET education guide demonstrates adding and positioning OBS Display Capture and Video Capture Device sources, but it does not establish a built-in timetable template or a universal overlay feature.
- Keep the panel in a stable part of the frame where it does not cover the lesson or documentary material.
- Check legibility in the actual stream preview and at a small viewing size, including on a phone. Use clear contrast and avoid relying on tiny text.
- Make sure the graphic represents the current timetable. Decide who will update it and how viewers will be told about a changed class or interruption.
These are production recommendations, not measured design thresholds from YouTube. No particular timetable layout or overlay resolution is mandated by the platform guidance cited here.

Connect the encoder and go live
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it before the day of a planned class rather than relying on a last-minute first broadcast.
- Prepare the outgoing scene. In your encoder, select the scene that contains the lesson or program and the timetable graphic. If the class includes live classroom video or audio, add the required camera and microphone sources; these are optional if the program does not need them.
- Configure the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream. If you chose separate class events, schedule the relevant broadcast and share its watch page using YouTube’s current Live Control Room controls.
- Connect the encoder. Use the YouTube stream URL and stream key for the broadcast in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to the associated stream.
- Check the preview before starting. Confirm that the timetable is visible, readable, current, and not covering important content. Verify the selected broadcast and outgoing program before going live.
- Start the encoder and confirm the broadcast is live. Follow the current YouTube Live Control Room status and controls for that stream. Interface wording can change, so use YouTube’s current encoder help for exact screen-by-screen steps.
The available guides establish encoder-based streaming and scene composition, but not one universal “timetable overlay” control shared by encoders. Follow the instructions for the encoder you actually use.
Plan for a stream that is genuinely continuous
A timetable graphic solves the on-screen information problem; it does not by itself keep a broadcast running or keep the schedule accurate. Before calling a channel 24/7, decide who owns these ongoing tasks:

- Updating the timetable when class times, titles, or breaks change.
- Choosing what viewers see between classes, during breaks, or if a lesson is delayed.
- Monitoring the stream and deciding how to respond to an interruption.
- Managing recordings and archives, especially when a continuous broadcast runs 12 hours or longer.
- Confirming that the video and audio used in the program are authorized for streaming. YouTube’s scheduling or encoder setup does not grant rights to documentary footage, music, or other material.
The YouTube API’s 24/7-feed example describes a platform use case; it does not provide staffing, internet redundancy, rights clearance, or recovery procedures for a school. Those need to be planned by the channel operator.
