For a typical 24/7 YouTube Live stream, use RTMPS with constant bitrate (CBR), a supported video codec, and a quality level your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends two-second keyframes. For a 1080p30 stream, its recommended video bitrate is 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps with H.264. Those are standard live-encoder recommendations, not a special 24/7 preset.
Recommended settings for a 24/7 YouTube stream
YouTube ingests one live signal and automatically transcodes it into multiple playback formats for viewers, so you do not need to send a separate video format for each device. The settings below follow YouTube Help’s general live-encoder guidance; YouTube does not publish a separate codec or encoder profile specifically for streams running 24 hours or longer. Choose a quality your connection can maintain reliably.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Ingestion protocol | RTMP and RTMPS are listed; RTMPS is the encrypted extension YouTube recommends. | Use RTMPS for a typical non-HDR stream. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. | Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support reliably. H.264 is a conservative compatibility choice; H.265 or AV1 can work when supported. |
| Rate control | CBR. | Set constant bitrate rather than allowing bitrate to vary. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. | Set two seconds. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. | For ordinary low-motion documentary footage or ambient visuals, 30 fps is a sensible starting point. Use 60 fps only when the motion and detail justify the higher bitrate. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; stereo recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. | AAC stereo is a conventional choice unless your workflow requires otherwise. |
| Network headroom | YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth beyond stream bandwidth. | Test sustained upload under representative conditions, account for backup bitrate if applicable, and avoid saturating a shared connection. |
Choose resolution and bitrate together
YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These values are YouTube Help recommendations, not independently measured benchmarks. For a long-running feed, a lower setting that remains stable is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops.
| Input resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, 1080p30 is a practical starting point if your encoder and sustained upload can support it. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264 at that setting. To apply its 20% headroom guidance, the available upload capacity should exceed the stream’s bitrate by that margin, with allowance for other network traffic. The same calculation matters more at higher resolutions and frame rates, whose recommended bitrates are higher.

YouTube’s bitrate table also provides minimum rates for 720p and below; consult the official table for the minimum that corresponds to your selected codec and setting rather than treating the recommended rates above as minimums.
RTMPS or HLS?
Use RTMPS for a standard non-HDR stream
RTMPS is the straightforward default for most 24/7 feeds: YouTube recommends it for secure transport, and its normal live settings support the listed RTMP/RTMPS codecs. Use the protocol and codec combination your encoder can maintain consistently.

Use HLS only when the workflow calls for it
YouTube identifies HLS for HDR workflows or codecs RTMP does not support. HLS sends video in segments rather than as one continuous feed, so it has higher latency than RTMP. Its setup also has specific requirements: TS segments must last 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments, uploads use HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not supported. HLS also disables YouTube’s “Ultra low-latency” option. It is not an automatic quality upgrade for an ordinary always-on stream.
Make the stream reliable over time
Video settings are only one part of a 24/7 setup. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream and recommends a reliable connection with upload headroom. Build around the equipment, power, and internet connection you actually have, then test before relying on the feed.

- Test with representative footage, motion, and audio; check that the selected encoder settings remain stable for an extended run.
- Monitor stream health and confirm that viewers can open the event on the channel or watch page and on mobile.
- If you have a backup encoder or failover arrangement, test the handoff rather than assuming it will work.
- Check any local archive recordings to confirm they contain the expected audio and video.
- A UPS can keep dedicated streaming and network equipment powered through brief interruptions, but it does not prevent internet outages and is not a YouTube requirement.
Copyright and documentary footage
Before streaming a documentary or a loop of recorded footage, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, narration, and any other included material. A technical format recommendation does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted content. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from encoder settings; repeated or reused material can also raise channel-policy questions. Review the copyright safety checklist before putting a recording on a continuous loop.

Troubleshooting common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream drops or disconnects | Upload instability, insufficient headroom, or a disruption on a shared connection. | Check sustained upload under real operating conditions, reduce resolution or bitrate if needed, and avoid saturating the connection. |
| Encoder settings are rejected or the feed does not start | Unsupported protocol, codec, or encoder configuration for the chosen workflow. | Use RTMPS with a codec supported by both YouTube and your encoder; verify keyframe interval and CBR settings. |
| Playback is delayed more than expected | HLS has higher latency than RTMP; latency mode and delivery setup affect the viewing experience. | For a standard non-HDR feed, prefer RTMPS when low delay is important. Check YouTube’s latency controls for the event. |
| Video looks less detailed than expected or buffers | The chosen resolution/bitrate may exceed what the encoder or connection can sustain, or the viewer may be receiving a transcoded rendition appropriate to their network. | Confirm the incoming stream health and compare settings with YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendations; test playback on a representative device and network. |
| Audio is absent or poor | Audio encoding, input routing, or an incorrect source setting. | Confirm that the encoder is sending an AAC or MP3 audio stream and that its selected input is present; monitor the stream and local archive. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube have a special format preset for 24/7 streams?
No separate 24/7 codec or encoder profile is published; use the general live settings and choose quality the connection can sustain.
Do viewers need the same codec and bitrate I send to YouTube?
No. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live signal into multiple outputs for viewers and devices.
