OBS vs. FFmpeg for a Nonstop YouTube Event Replay Stream

Choose OBS if your replay stream needs scenes, graphics, or hands-on control; choose FFmpeg if you want to send a fixed video or known sequence from a command line. Neither is inherently more reliable: the result depends on the media, computer, network, process supervision, and recovery plan. If you do not want a computer running at your location, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that loops uploaded videos to YouTube.

Which option fits your replay stream?

Need Better fit Why
Multiple scenes, graphics, or changes made by an operator during the broadcast OBS Its interface is designed around configuring scenes and sources, with operator controls such as hotkeys.
A fixed prerecorded file or known sequence sent continuously FFmpeg It can read media from files and write to a configured streaming output; the workflow can be scripted, but requires command-line setup and supervision.
Run the replay without leaving a computer on at home or work StreamNeo It loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, so your computer does not need to stay on.

This is a workflow recommendation, not a reliability ranking. There is no matched long-duration test establishing that OBS or FFmpeg runs longer or uses fewer resources for equivalent media, settings, and hardware.

What OBS and FFmpeg do—and do not do

OBS: a visual production workflow

OBS lets an operator assemble a broadcast from scenes and sources, configure output resolution and bitrate, use hotkeys, and manage recording and reconnect behavior. It suits a replay event when the production may change while live—for example, switching between a title card, a video, and an operator-managed scene.

Do not confuse OBS Replay Buffer with a nonstop replay loop. Replay Buffer saves recent captured footage; it is not the feature for continuously playing a prerecorded program. OBS’s project interface also indicates that Replay Buffer cannot be used with Custom Output (FFmpeg).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg: a command-line media workflow

FFmpeg reads inputs such as files, devices, or network streams and writes to configured outputs. For a fixed replay, it can send a file to YouTube without building a visual scene layout. The trade-off is that you must construct and supervise the command, understand its options, and decide how the process should recover after a failure.

FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so their order matters. Check the documentation and capabilities of the exact FFmpeg build you will run; protocol and recovery options can vary by build.

Set up the shared YouTube side first

  1. Enable and configure the live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select the event and use the encoder connection details shown for it. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes recurring scheduled events and a 24/7 broadcast scenario, but that does not guarantee that every channel or event configuration can keep one event open indefinitely. Verify the settings for your channel and event.
  2. Use the stream URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen share, publish it in a command, or send it to someone who should not control the broadcast. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  3. Prefer YouTube’s secure ingest endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over SSL; confirm that the deployed build supports the protocol and validates certificates as expected.
  4. Match the output to the source and connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. It lists H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suited to the original media and available upload capacity, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
  5. Test and monitor. Run a representative rehearsal with the intended duration, media, resolution, frame rate, audio, network path, recording settings, and restart behavior. Watch YouTube’s stream health while live; a process that appears to be running does not by itself prove that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Run the replay with OBS

  1. Build the scene. In OBS, add a scene and add the replay media as a source. Add any title cards, graphics, or other sources the event actually needs. Preview the full loop, including transitions or the point where playback restarts.
  2. Set output and video. In Settings → Output, configure the streaming encoder, bitrate, and keyframe interval. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to match the program you intend to send. Apply YouTube’s current recommendations and ensure your connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
  3. Connect the event. In Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service and connect the event using the stream key or account workflow presented by OBS. Keep the key private.
  4. Decide whether to record locally. If you need a complete replay independent of YouTube’s archive, configure a separate local recording and confirm there is enough disk space for the planned duration.
  5. Start a rehearsal, then go live. Check picture, audio, loop behavior, YouTube stream health, and OBS status. Confirm your reconnect behavior and who will respond if the source or connection fails.

OBS’s settings labels can vary by version and operating system. Check the installed version’s interface and current YouTube instructions rather than assuming every control is in exactly the same place.

Run the replay with FFmpeg

  1. Install and verify the actual build. Use an FFmpeg build with the required input, encoder, and RTMPS protocol support. Check the installed build’s help and test its TLS/RTMPS behavior before the event.
  2. Prepare the source and output settings. Choose a media file and decide whether you will loop it, how the video and audio will be encoded, and which resolution and frame rate to send. Set bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval in line with YouTube’s current recommendations and the available upload capacity.
  3. Use a command with deliberate option order. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output. For a file intended to play in real time, -re (equivalent to -readrate 1) can pace input reading. Apply input options before the relevant input and output options before the relevant output. Consult the installed build’s documentation for the exact looping, encoding, and RTMPS syntax; do not paste an unverified command into a live event.
  4. Protect the stream key. Avoid leaving a key in a shared script, public repository, or log. Restrict access to the command and its environment, and rotate the key if it is exposed.
  5. Supervise and rehearse recovery. Decide how the process is monitored and restarted. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation discusses RTMP output recovery options for temporary failures, but availability and behavior depend on the build and configuration. Validate the chosen recovery method by testing it before going live.

Reconnection is not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing or preservation of the YouTube event. A restart can interrupt playback, and YouTube’s event state may need attention even after the encoder reconnects.

Plan for archives, DVR, and long runtimes

  • YouTube archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a nonstop event exceeding 12 hours will produce a complete archive. If the full replay matters, plan and test a separate local recording, check storage capacity, and verify current YouTube guidance.
  • Viewer DVR: YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. Disabling DVR prevents seeking back during the live broadcast; it does not necessarily prevent a recording from being available later.
  • Long-running event: A 24/7 broadcast scenario appears in YouTube’s documented API workflows, but there is no universal duration guarantee established here for every account, event setup, or encoder. Verify the configuration you will use.

Troubleshoot before and during the broadcast

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube does not receive the encoder signal Confirm the event’s stream URL and key, that the correct event is selected, and that the encoder can reach the RTMPS endpoint. If the key may have been exposed, rotate it and update the encoder.
Stream health is poor or playback stutters Check upload capacity and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable. Confirm the output resolution and frame rate suit the source and connection, then rehearse with representative movement and audio.
FFmpeg exits or fails to reconnect Inspect the process output and confirm the installed build supports the selected protocol and recovery options. Test the recovery configuration under a temporary connection failure; add a process supervisor if the deployment requires restart management.
OBS reconnects, but the event is still interrupted Check YouTube stream health and event state, not only OBS’s connection indicator. Reconnect does not guarantee viewers saw an uninterrupted stream or that the event remained in the intended state.
The video loops but audio or transitions are wrong Review the source file and the loop boundary during rehearsal. Test the exact media sequence and output path planned for the live event.
The full long event is missing from the YouTube archive Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream of 12 hours or more. Use a tested separate recording when a complete replay is essential and confirm available storage.
