Check your upload speed, then compare it with the live bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and encoder. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of your upload capacity spare. A speed test is a useful snapshot; a test stream with the equipment and network you plan to use is the practical confirmation.
How to check your upload speed for YouTube Live
- Choose the stream settings first. Decide on a resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec. “1080p” alone is not enough to identify a bitrate because the recommendation also depends on frame rate and codec.
- Find the live bitrate recommendation. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table for your combination. Do not use YouTube’s separate recommendations for encoding ordinary video uploads; they are not the live-streaming table.
- Measure upload on the connection you will stream from. Run a speed test at the computer and on the router or Wi-Fi arrangement intended for the broadcast. Use the upload result, not download. YouTube notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed, and a fast home or office connection may be shared with other users.
- Compare the result with the stream bitrate and leave capacity spare. YouTube recommends 20% headroom. As a calculation based on that recommendation, minimum target upload capacity is approximately total stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. For one 10 Mbps stream, that is about 12.5 Mbps available upload.
- Test the actual stream. Send a test with representative movement and audio, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status. If it is unstable, lower the bitrate or quality, pause competing network traffic, try Ethernet for a computer, and test again.
A speed-test result is a momentary measurement, not a promise that the same capacity will remain available throughout a broadcast. Congestion and network interruptions can still affect a stream.
What upload speed do YouTube’s bitrate recommendations imply?
The examples below are YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds or guarantees of continuous capacity. The upload figures apply the 20% headroom calculation above and are approximate.
| Live setting | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Approximate upload capacity with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommended values for live ingestion, in the English encoder guidance accessed in 2026. The capacity column is arithmetic from YouTube’s 20% headroom advice, not a separate YouTube-published speed threshold. Your actual encoder should use settings supported by your equipment and YouTube’s current guidance.

Why upload speed alone does not settle the question
Shared capacity and congestion
Your measured upload rate can be reduced when other people or devices use the same connection. A plan’s advertised speed is not proof of the upload capacity available to your streaming device at broadcast time. Test under realistic network use, and avoid large uploads or other heavy traffic during the stream where possible.
Wi-Fi versus Ethernet
For streaming from a computer, YouTube recommends an Ethernet cable connection. A cable can remove instability in the local wireless link, but it does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider. If you test on Wi-Fi because that is how you intend to stream, make the test from the same location and setup.

More than one destination
If you simulstream to multiple platforms, add the target bitrate for every destination. YouTube advises aiming for upload speed 1.5 to 2 times that combined bitrate and recommends a realistic test with moving video and audio. This multi-destination guidance is distinct from the 20% headroom recommendation for a single stream. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.
Settings that matter during the test
Keep the upload check focused on the bitrate for your chosen live configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. These encoder settings do not replace the need for spare upload capacity.

Troubleshoot an unstable test stream
- The test result is below the calculated capacity: lower the stream bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and check the corresponding live recommendation again.
- The speed test looks adequate but the stream health is poor: run another test stream with representative motion and audio, check whether other users or devices are consuming upload capacity, and repeat on Ethernet if streaming from a computer.
- Results vary between tests: treat the connection as variable rather than relying on the best result. Test at the time and from the location you expect to broadcast.
- You send to multiple destinations: calculate the sum of destination bitrates and apply YouTube’s 1.5–2-times upload guidance for simulstreaming.
- Repeated tests remain inadequate: reduce the target quality or investigate local internet plans and their upload-specific terms and availability. An Ethernet cable can address a weak Wi-Fi link, but it cannot upgrade the provider’s service capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a different option from a live encoder running on your own computer: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
