At 1440p60, start at 34 Mbps with H.264 or 24 Mbps with AV1/H.265. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a stable upload connection that can sustain the selected rate. These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not its separate video-upload recommendations. The bigger VOD issue: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a single 24-hour broadcast is not a reliable way to create a complete replay.
Choose bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate
There is no single best YouTube gaming bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations depend on the video codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose the row that matches the signal your encoder will actually send, then test whether your connection can hold that rate without instability.

These are YouTube live-ingest recommendations published in its live encoder settings guidance, current guidance retrieved in 2026. For comparison, YouTube’s separate SDR upload guidance lists 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate video and 24 Mbps for 1440p high-frame-rate video. Those are upload-video recommendations; do not substitute them for the live-ingest targets above.
Recommended target versus minimum
YouTube also lists minimum live bitrates. At 1080p60, the minimum is 6 Mbps for H.264 or 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 1440p60, it is 8 Mbps or 6 Mbps, respectively. A minimum is not the recommended target. If you use less than the recommended figure, expect to make a quality trade-off rather than assume the minimum will look equivalent.

Let connection stability guide the format
The encoder’s selected bitrate must be sustainable over time, not merely achievable in a brief speed test. If your upload connection cannot reliably support the recommended bitrate, choose a lower resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding row, rather than setting a high target that your connection repeatedly fails to deliver. Fast gameplay with frequent motion is a useful stress case when assessing the picture.
Set the encoder for YouTube live ingest
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends RTMPS. For the settings that most directly affect a stable ingest, use CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency; YouTube recommends two seconds and sets four seconds as the maximum. Its advanced guidance also specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR.

Configuration checklist
- Video codec: Select a codec supported by YouTube’s live guidance and your encoder. Use the matching codec column in the bitrate table.
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the intended output, such as 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps, and select its matching bitrate recommendation.
- Rate control: Choose constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set the interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS where available.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3, as listed in YouTube’s guidance.
- Advanced video settings: For the applicable YouTube ingest configuration, use square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR.
Encoder interfaces differ, so menu names and locations vary. Match the values above to the corresponding output or streaming settings in your software, and verify the actual outgoing resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in the encoder rather than relying only on a saved profile name.
Test before committing to a 24/7 broadcast
A correct configuration still needs a real-world check. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. For a long-running channel, repeat those operational checks: a stream that works at launch can still be affected by network, power, encoder, or audio/video problems later.

- Check upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test from the network the encoder will use. Compare the result with the selected live bitrate and confirm the connection remains steady; a momentary peak does not establish sustained capacity.
- Run a representative test stream. Include gameplay with motion similar to the actual channel content, and listen to the audio. Look for visible blocking, dropped or choppy motion, and audio problems.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. Resolve warnings or ingest problems before treating the configuration as ready for continuous operation.
- Monitor both picture and sound. YouTube advises continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Check the stream after launch and periodically during operation, not only during setup.
- Check any local archive file. If recording locally, confirm that the file exists and continues to grow while the stream runs.
Plan the VOD separately: a 24-hour stream may not archive
Bitrate determines the video sent to YouTube; it does not remove the platform’s archive-duration risk. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” See YouTube Help: Archive live streams. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube VOD, regardless of its bitrate or resolution.
Keep a local recording when the replay matters
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup and checking that the file remains intact and grows during recording. If you need a complete replay, make a local recording part of the workflow and decide how you will retain or publish that footage. Drive capacity depends on the recording settings and duration; YouTube does not specify a drive type, capacity, or model. An external SSD or hard drive is one possible place to store a local recording, but it is not a YouTube requirement.

Separate live continuity from replay completeness
A 24/7 live channel and a complete 24-hour replay are different goals. Configure the live ingest for stable viewing, then choose a VOD workflow that does not depend on YouTube capturing a stream longer than 12 hours. A local archive provides a separate copy; it does not change YouTube’s stated capture warning.

Bitrate and encoder settings do not grant rights to broadcast game footage, soundtrack music, or other material in a recording. Before using a video as continuous live content, check that you have permission to use all included material and review the terms that apply to your channel and content. A technically healthy stream can still face copyright or platform-policy issues; use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight resource.
