For replaying prerecorded gaming VODs as a continuous YouTube livestream, a managed rerun service is usually simpler; OBS on a VPS is the better fit when you need control over scenes, plugins, inputs, or server configuration and are prepared to run and recover it yourself. Neither option is automatically cheaper or more reliable. Compare the actual service limits and current VPS quote, including storage, outbound bandwidth, encoding capacity, and the time you will spend maintaining the stream.
What each option does
A gaming VOD rerun service
A managed rerun service plays uploaded recordings in a chosen order and sends the resulting feed to YouTube. Depending on the product, you may manage a playlist in a browser, pause or skip playback, and have access to a hosted OBS desktop. Features differ: check whether the service is a video playout tool or a full OBS environment, and verify its supported inputs, scenes, output limits, storage, and destinations.
OBS running on a VPS
A VPS is a rented server; OBS is the streaming software you configure on it. You set up the media and scenes, configure encoding and YouTube output, and arrange for OBS and the server to remain operational. This gives you more direct control, but you—not the VPS provider by default—must handle OBS configuration, monitoring, disconnect recovery, and media management.
Managed service or VPS: the practical differences

Cloud-OBS is one example, not a specification for the entire category. Its vendor page describes a hosted OBS playlist service for YouTube, Twitch, or Kick; this article’s comparison concerns YouTube. The page says onboarding is handled with the customer and that the first release uses uploaded files rather than RTMP input. It also says the channel owner remains responsible for content and rights, and that continuous streaming does not guarantee audience or visibility. Features, offer terms, and availability can change; confirm them with the provider before subscribing.

Choose based on control, capacity, and workload
Choose managed playback when
- Your main task is looping uploaded VODs rather than building a custom live production.
- You prefer browser-based playlist controls and provider-led onboarding to managing a server.
- The provider’s supported resolution, frame rate, storage, inputs, and destinations suit your channel.
Choose OBS on a VPS when
- You need custom scenes, plugins, input sources, or greater control of OBS and the server environment.
- You can verify that the VPS has enough encoding capacity and network allowance for the stream you intend to send.
- You are willing to configure startup, monitoring, media storage, and a recovery process, and to troubleshoot interruptions.
Do not assume the VPS route is cheaper because a server rental looks inexpensive, or that a hosted service is more reliable because it is managed. There is no like-for-like VPS price or independent uptime comparison established here. Compare current terms and the work each option leaves to you.
Set YouTube output to a suitable technical baseline
YouTube supports encoder-based gameplay streams, including overlays and external audio or camera hardware. Its current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, calls for constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. For one published example, YouTube’s current settings page gives 1080p60 H.264 a minimum bitrate of 6 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 17 Mbps. These figures are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular service or VPS can deliver that output reliably.

- Choose a resolution and frame rate that the service or VPS can sustain. Cloud-OBS lists 1080p30; do not infer 60 fps or higher output from that specification.
- For a VPS, check the actual server’s encoding method and resources rather than assuming it can encode 1080p60. Compare its outbound capacity with YouTube’s bitrate guidance.
- Use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval as the baseline, staying within YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
- Test upload bitrate and stream stability before relying on a continuous broadcast. YouTube advises choosing quality that remains reliable on the available connection.
Keep YouTube rules and content rights in view
A successful RTMPS connection or continuous loop only shows that a feed reached YouTube; it does not establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Its live-stream documentation also states limits of ten active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. Check current YouTube rules for your channel and content, including copyright and reused-content considerations, before looping recordings. A VOD containing music, gameplay, or other material you do not have rights to use can create problems even when the stream is technically configured correctly.
