Yes, sometimes. A public gaming livestream archive can earn Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue if your channel is in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), you have accepted YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module, and the video and channel meet applicable rights and monetization policies. A public archive may also contribute eligible watch hours toward YPP entry, but that does not itself enable monetization or guarantee payment.
What has to be true for a gaming VOD to earn revenue?
For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue, the channel must be in YPP and have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. The archive must be public, and the video remains subject to YouTube’s standard advertiser-suitability review. Enabling monetization is not a promise that ads will appear or that a specific amount will be earned. YouTube’s Watch Page monetization guidance explains the module and eligibility.
YouTube states that creators who accept the module receive 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public Watch Page videos. That is the stated revenue-share term, not a forecast of a particular creator’s take-home earnings; YouTube’s partner terms do not guarantee whether or how much a creator will be paid. Livestream features are separate from replay ads
YouTube lists live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships among potential live-stream revenue options for eligible creators. For fan-funding features, creators need the Commerce Product Module and must enable each feature. These are not automatic consequences of leaving a VOD public. YouTube describes live-stream ad controls, including pre-roll and display ads and automatic or manual mid-rolls, in its live-stream ad guidance. Ads are not guaranteed to serve. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls in that guidance, but that is not a promise of higher earnings on an individual replay.

Can the archived stream help you qualify for YPP?
Potentially. YouTube counts eligible watch hours from long-form videos set to public toward YPP thresholds. Livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD are excluded from qualified watch hours. This concerns eligibility accounting: accumulating qualifying hours does not put a channel in YPP by itself, approve a video for ads, or guarantee revenue. Do game rights and originality affect monetization?
Check the publisher’s commercial-use terms
Whether gameplay can be monetized depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the game publisher. YouTube warns that simply showing gameplay or software for an extended period may not be accepted. Its guidance says: “Video game content may be monetized if the associated step-by-step commentary is strictly tied to the live action being shown and provides instructional or educational value.” Review the specific game’s license and confirm that you have rights to all visual and audio elements before turning on ads. YouTube’s gaming-content monetization guidance explains the general standard; it cannot establish the terms for every game.

Repeated reruns are not covered by a blanket rule
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats. They require original, authentic value and can make repetitive or mass-produced content ineligible. YouTube’s policy page records a July 15, 2025 clarification renaming “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content”; YouTube says that clarification did not change its reused-content policy. The guidance does not promise that every creator’s self-rerun format or frequency will pass review, nor does it categorically prohibit all reruns. How to assess your rerun before relying on revenue
- Confirm the archive is a public VOD. Unlisted, deleted, or non-archived livestreams do not count as qualified public long-form watch hours under YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Check your channel’s YPP and module status. Watch Page ad and Premium revenue require YPP enrollment and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Fan-funding features have separate requirements.
- Review the game’s license and every audio or visual element. Do not assume that owning or playing a game grants commercial-use rights to the resulting stream.
- Assess the content itself. A long stretch of gameplay without commentary or instructional value may not meet YouTube’s gaming-content guidance; channel-level originality and repetition policies also apply.
- Treat ad delivery and revenue as uncertain. Monetization can be enabled without an ad being served, and no fixed payout follows from a public replay.
What YouTube’s published ad statistic does—and does not—show
YouTube reported that creators who selected live automatic mid-roll ads saw over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not. This platform-reported comparison covered 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a guarantee, and it does not establish that the same uplift applies to a particular channel, game, or VOD rerun. Keep a prerecorded gaming stream running
If the goal is to replay uploaded gaming videos as a continuous YouTube live stream, you can do it yourself with a computer and streaming software, or use a cloud service. Whichever method you choose, a live relay does not remove the need to meet YouTube’s rights and monetization rules. A stream may be live while its archived VOD and channel remain ineligible for monetization.
