Keep the original VOD and direct viewers to it for the original chat. On YouTube, check that Live Chat Replay remains enabled on the archive and avoid editing the livestream in YouTube’s video editor.
First, distinguish the archive from a rerun
A chat replay belongs to an archived stream: it shows messages alongside the original broadcast timeline. A Twitch rerun is a new channel broadcast of prerecorded content. Twitch describes reruns as “non-live content that you can play on your channel,” and its official instructions explain how to label and stream one; they do not document a control that imports the original VOD’s timestamped chat into that new broadcast. That transfer is not guaranteed by the documented workflow.
So if viewers need the original conversation synchronized to the gameplay, preserve the original archive and link viewers to it. During a new rerun, viewers can use that broadcast’s live chat, but that is distinct from replaying the original chat.
Keep the original Twitch VOD and chat replay
Enable VOD storage before the broadcast
- Before streaming, open Twitch Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream (Stream Settings) and enable Store Past Broadcasts. Twitch says this is not enabled by default. If the original broadcast is not saved, you cannot rely on its archive or associated chat replay being available.
- After the stream, locate the VOD in Video Producer and confirm it is available. Twitch’s published retention periods are 60 days for Partners and users with Prime or Turbo, 14 days for Affiliates, and 7 days for other broadcasters. Download or export any important VOD before the applicable period expires; keeping a local video copy does not itself restore chat replay.
Start and label the rerun accurately
- Use an encoder of your choice to capture and stream the VOD back to your channel, following Twitch’s rerun workflow.
- In the rerun setup, select the Rerun checkbox. Start the title with [Rerun] and include that it is a rerun in the go-live notification, so viewers know they are watching prerecorded content.
- Direct viewers who want the original timestamped chat to the original VOD. Do not promise that the new rerun will show that chat unless your separate production method has been verified to do so.
Check chat replay on a YouTube gaming archive
- Open the archived livestream in YouTube Studio and check the video’s Customization options for Live Chat Replay. YouTube says replay is available on stream archives and enabled by default, but the option can be unchecked for an individual archive.
- If preserving the chat matters, do not edit the livestream in YouTube’s video editor. YouTube states that live streams edited there will not have chat replay.
- Send viewers to the YouTube watch page when chat is important. YouTube live chat is not available in embedded players, so an embed is not a substitute for the watch page.
Do not confuse Twitch Stream Rewind with chat replay
Stream Rewind lets eligible viewers pause and seek backward during a live Twitch stream. When a viewer is behind, chat continues live rather than replaying messages from the time being watched. Twitch says only Affiliates and Partners can enable Stream Rewind; their Store Past Broadcasts and Always Publish VODs settings must be on. Viewer access is limited to qualifying channel subscribers or Turbo users. This live-stream feature does not provide the original chat on a later rerun.

Where chat replay can disappear from view
- The Twitch VOD was not saved: enable Store Past Broadcasts before the original stream and check the VOD in Video Producer afterward.
- The Twitch VOD expired: Twitch’s retention window depends on broadcaster status or subscription; export important VODs before it ends.
- The new Twitch rerun has no original chat: the official rerun workflow does not document importing it. Link the original VOD for its chat replay instead.
- YouTube archive has no replay: check that Live Chat Replay is enabled for that archived video and whether it was edited in YouTube’s video editor.
- A YouTube embed has no chat: use the watch page; live chat is unavailable in embedded players.
- A Twitch embed has no chat replay: Twitch’s embed documentation says chat replay is unsupported in its embedded player. Direct viewers to the original VOD on Twitch.
