You can broadcast gaming footage continuously by sending OBS output to a YouTube live stream, but OBS depends on the computer, game footage source, and internet connection staying operational. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours—not a complete recording of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. If your goal is a saved VOD, plan shorter broadcasts; if your goal is an always-live channel, monitor the live feed and its source.
What you need before streaming gaming VODs on YouTube 24/7 with OBS
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Start activation ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- OBS Studio installed and connected to YouTube, either through account linking or a stream URL and key.
- A playable gaming-video source and the audio you intend to include. For PC gameplay, OBS can capture the game directly. For console gameplay, a capture device may be needed to bring HDMI video into the streaming computer; that is not necessary for every setup.
- A computer and network connection capable of remaining available for the duration of a local OBS broadcast. A 24/7 workflow does not make a consumer PC or home connection inherently uninterrupted.
- Permission to use the particular footage and audio. YouTube’s rules still apply, and there is no blanket assurance that every game, cutscene, or soundtrack can be retransmitted continuously.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, verify the channel and complete any live-stream activation steps. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the start time. Check YouTube’s current eligibility requirements.
- Create a live stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a new stream or, if you want a scheduled watch page, use the scheduling controls under Manage → Schedule stream. Set the title, visibility, category, and other applicable details there. YouTube’s encoder guide describes creating new broadcasts or reusing settings: YouTube Help: stream with an encoder.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and link your account, or copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. A stream key is a credential: do not show it in screenshots, videos, or public chat. OBS documents account linking and stream setup in its streaming guide.
- Build the gameplay scene. Add a game capture source for PC gameplay and arrange any overlays or other sources you actually need. Add and check the intended audio sources. If you are bringing console HDMI into the PC, connect the capture device and confirm its video and audio appear in OBS before going live.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check that the picture and sound appear in YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, follow Studio’s prompts and press Go Live if the broadcast is not set to start automatically. OBS notes that scheduled-stream behavior depends on settings such as Auto-start; unscheduled streams can behave differently. See the OBS setup guidance and YouTube encoder instructions.
- Monitor the whole chain. Keep an eye on OBS’s connection status, YouTube’s preview, source playback, and audio. A successful initial preview is not evidence that a long local session will remain connected indefinitely.
Decide whether you need a continuous live feed or saved VODs
A channel that stays live and a complete archived video are different outcomes. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise that a longer continuous stream will become one complete, reliable VOD. If archive completeness matters, divide programming into broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, plan the handoffs, and check that each archive is available afterward. This is a cautious planning approach based on YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee about every broadcast.
Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 live-feed pattern in which one ongoing stream can feed a continuous broadcast, with a separate broadcast used for a subset of the same content if needed. That is an API-level model; it does not mean ordinary OBS users have a special 24/7 switch or that a local computer will stay online indefinitely. YouTube’s API also exposes controls for recording, DVR, automatic start, and automatic stop. These are API-level controls, not settings every OBS user must change. YouTube notes that DVR and archive settings affect when playback is available after a broadcast; recording from the start without DVR may delay archive playback. See YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference. Viewer rewind is finite and varies by configuration and device, so do not treat DVR as a permanent substitute for an archive.

Rights and YouTube policy still apply
YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it may remove or restrict streams. A game being available to play or record does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast its footage or soundtrack 24/7. Check the publisher’s terms and the rights for any music, cutscenes, or other material in the specific video. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and policy guidance is at YouTube Help.
Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
