You can relay an Indian online radio station to YouTube with FFmpeg by feeding it a station-authorized audio stream, pairing that audio with an authorized still image, encoding a video stream, and sending it to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. First, get permission: a URL that plays publicly is not proof that you may retransmit the station’s programs on YouTube.
Before you start: confirm permission and account readiness
Get rights for the broadcast you plan to make
Ask the station and relevant rights holders for written permission to retransmit the programming on YouTube. Confirm that the permission covers the recordings and compositions, the territories where viewers may watch, the planned duration, and archiving or monetization if you intend to use those features. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the person providing the stream to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music licensing rights, and address territory-specific requirements and archived content. Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions.
A station’s location in India, a publicly playable player, or a successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that a particular retransmission is authorized under Indian law or elsewhere. Requirements depend on the station, repertoire, permissions, channel, and distribution territories; confirm them with the relevant parties before going live. This is a practical permissions check, not legal advice.
Make sure YouTube Live is available on your channel
You need a channel with live streaming enabled and an encoder-ready stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enablement until the planned broadcast time. Check the current YouTube live-streaming tips and eligibility guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find and test the station’s actual audio endpoint
FFmpeg needs a media endpoint it can read, not necessarily the web page where listeners press Play. A station’s player may use a direct HTTP(S) audio stream, an HLS playlist, redirects, or an authenticated feed. Ask the station for its approved stream URL and access method; do not bypass authentication or reuse a listener URL contrary to the station’s terms.
Before building the relay, test that your installed FFmpeg can open the endpoint and identify an audio stream. The command below assumes input 0 is a demuxable audio feed and input 1 is a still image. It is a template, not a tested command for every station or FFmpeg build. Check the installed build and its help for protocol options and encoders; the FFmpeg protocol documentation describes HTTP reconnect options.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides for that stream. Use those exact values; do not guess or hard-code a generic ingest endpoint.
- Keep the key private as you would a password. Store it in a protected configuration or environment rather than publishing it, committing it to a repository, or sharing terminal screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to create an encoder stream and obtain its connection details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Build the audio-plus-image FFmpeg relay
Choose an image you are allowed to use, such as station-approved artwork. The still image supplies the video track; audio-only input by itself does not satisfy this image-based video pattern. Replace every placeholder below with your real endpoint, file, and the server URL/key supplied by YouTube.

The input-specific reconnect flags appear before the station input so they apply to that input. The output combines the image as video with the station feed’s first audio stream, encodes H.264 video with AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to the YouTube-provided RTMPS address. If your FFmpeg build does not include libx264, select a compatible video encoder available in that build. The example’s video frame rate is 30 fps; confirm the complete output is accepted in YouTube’s preview.
Set compatible output and network conditions
- Ingest protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. Use the protocol and server URL shown in Live Control Room.
- Video: YouTube lists H.264 among supported encoder choices. The command uses
libx264where available and a still-image video track. - Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its stereo recommendations include 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; the template uses AAC at those audio settings. Treat them as published recommendations, not a guarantee for every endpoint or stream.
- Bandwidth: YouTube recommends available upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. Check the actual outbound stream rate and your host’s sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak.
Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and streaming tips. Test with the actual input and output settings in Live Control Room.

Test, go live, and monitor the relay
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream, if appropriate for your channel and rights. Check that Live Control Room receives signal and shows a preview.
- Listen to the preview and live player. Confirm the station audio is present, at a usable level, and synchronized with the image; verify the visual asset displays as intended.
- Confirm the stream title, visibility, and any archive settings reflect the permissions you obtained.
- When the test is sound, start the intended broadcast and keep checking the encoder, YouTube preview, audio/video quality, and host network while it runs. YouTube advises testing, preview checks, and continuous monitoring.
Reconnect behavior and common failures
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol supports reconnect controls such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof for endless streams, reconnect_streamed, network-error and HTTP-error retries, and retry delay or count limits. The template enables several of these with a maximum delay setting, but retry behavior depends on the installed FFmpeg version and the station endpoint. Reconnects can help restore a feed; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Some providers reject repeated connections or require headers or authentication, so use the station’s approved access method and verify option support locally.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the station URL | The URL may be a web page rather than a media endpoint, or the feed may redirect, require access, or use a format the build cannot read. | Obtain the approved direct endpoint and access instructions from the station. Test that FFmpeg can demux its audio before adding the image and YouTube output. |
| YouTube receives no signal | The server URL or key may be incorrect, or output may not be reaching the expected ingest. | Copy the current server URL and key from the stream’s Live Control Room details, check the command’s final output URL, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | The station feed may not expose an audio stream as input 0, or the selected mapping may not match its streams. | Inspect the input’s detected streams and map the actual audio stream. The template assumes input 0 has audio stream 0. |
| Preview fails or output is rejected | An encoder or format option may not be supported by the local build, or settings may not be compatible with the stream setup. | Check FFmpeg’s available encoders and protocol options, use a compatible H.264 encoder, and validate the output in YouTube preview against current encoder guidance. |
| The relay stops after a feed interruption | The endpoint may not permit retries, or recovery may exceed configured behavior. | Check FFmpeg logs, station endpoint requirements, network stability, and retry options supported by the installed build. Have an operator ready to investigate or restart; reconnect flags are not an uptime guarantee. |
| Playback buffers or drops | Available sustained upload bandwidth may be too close to the total stream bitrate or unstable. | Measure the host connection during operation and maintain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom above stream bitrate. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a machine at home to keep an FFmpeg process running, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos, not a relay for a live radio endpoint.
