To rotate multiple gaming VODs on YouTube Live, use an encoder or playback tool to play the videos in sequence and send one continuous feed to YouTube. YouTube receives that live feed; selecting a YouTube playlist by itself does not turn its videos into a live broadcast. The exact playlist, looping, and transition controls depend on the tool you use.
How the rotation works
Your encoder or playback setup handles the VOD order, playback, looping, and transitions. YouTube Live receives the resulting continuous video-and-audio feed through the stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents encoder streaming, but its help pages do not describe a built-in multi-VOD rotation control; treat playlist setup as specific to your chosen playback tool. This is different from adding videos to a YouTube playlist: a playlist alone does not send prerecorded files into a live event. A video used as a live source is still subject to applicable rights and YouTube policies, so do not rebroadcast another creator’s VOD unless you have the necessary permission.
Before you start
- Confirm that your channel is eligible for live streaming and that live streaming is enabled. YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guide covers verification, restrictions, and age requirements.
- Choose an encoder or playback tool that can play your files in the intended order and continue into the next file. Verify that it supports whatever looping and transitions you need; these controls vary by tool.
- Prepare VOD files you have the right to use, and check that their audio levels, aspect ratio, and resolution are suitable for a continuous broadcast.
- Make sure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% more upload capacity than the bitrate you plan to stream at; see its streaming tips.
Set up and run the VOD rotation
- Build the playlist in your playback tool. Add the gaming VODs in the order you want viewers to see them. Configure the tool to move from one file to the next, and set a loop if you want the sequence to repeat. Test transitions and audio between files. There is no single YouTube setting for this step; follow the encoder or playback tool’s instructions.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream, or schedule one if you want an upcoming watch page and reminders. YouTube describes these options in its encoder setup guide.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Rehearse before going public. Start the encoder feed and inspect the preview. Confirm that the first VOD is correct, the order and transitions work, and both picture and sound are present. A private or unlisted test is useful when you want to check the setup without a public event.
- Start the event and monitor it. Once the preview is correct, start the public stream when ready. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video throughout the broadcast; YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring rather than assuming a healthy start means the whole stream will remain healthy. - End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the encoder feed when the rotation is finished. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; this is not a guarantee for longer streams. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Bandwidth, quality, and reliability
Plan bandwidth around the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, not just the video bitrate if your tool reports audio separately. Keep the recommended 20% upload headroom available during the stream. If other devices or applications share the connection, their traffic can reduce that margin.

Use the encoder settings appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube publishes supported encoder settings and bitrate guidance in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Check the applicable settings for your format in that guide rather than assuming one bitrate fits every resolution or frame rate.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream starts with the wrong video or order. Check the playback queue and its start position before reconnecting to the event. Run the sequence once in a test to confirm file order.
- A gap or abrupt change occurs between VODs. Inspect how your playback tool advances between files and whether the files have mismatched audio or video formats. Transition behavior is tool-specific; adjust or standardize the files and rehearse again.
- YouTube shows no preview or the encoder will not connect. Confirm that you copied the stream URL and key for the intended event and entered them in the correct encoder fields. Check that live streaming is enabled on the channel and that the encoder is sending a feed.
- The picture or sound is missing or unhealthy. Check the encoder preview and audio source, then verify the stream settings against YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Continue monitoring after the issue is corrected.
- The broadcast buffers or loses stability. Check actual upload capacity and competing network use. Keep the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends above your total stream bitrate.
- The stream key may have been exposed. Replace or reset the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before the next broadcast.
Standalone hardware option
YouTube’s encoder guide names the AJA HELO Plus and says its optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialist hardware route, not a requirement for a basic VOD rotation.
