A VPS is not automatically powerful enough just because it runs OBS: verify the plan’s encoder access and sustained outbound capacity for your chosen resolution and frame rate.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction during the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Windows VPS with OBS installed and enough compute capacity to encode your chosen scene and video settings.
- Sustained outbound bandwidth that can carry the selected video bitrate, plus enough data allowance for the stream’s duration.
- Access to YouTube Studio and the live event’s server URL and stream key.
YouTube and OBS do not certify a particular VPS provider or plan for this workload. OBS’s official requirements page warns that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU demand depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Check the actual plan rather than assuming a universal vCPU, RAM or GPU minimum.
Set up the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live. Create a new stream or select a scheduled event in Live Control Room.
- Copy the ingest details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported; RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS and go to Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if available, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. If OBS offers a server selection, use the URL YouTube provides for the event.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Configure and start the encoder. Set the output and video options described below, then click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Go live from YouTube. Once the preview and stream health look right, click Go live in Live Control Room for a scheduled stream, following YouTube’s event flow. Confirm the public watch page is accessible.
Choose OBS settings for YouTube and the VPS
Video codec, bitrate and frame rate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its recommended video bitrates vary by codec, resolution and frame rate:

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not proof that a VPS can sustain the load. Set the codec OBS can encode reliably on the plan. A hardware encoder may reduce CPU demands, but only if the VPS provider exposes compatible hardware to the Windows guest and OBS can use it.

Keyframes, audio and color
- Rate control: CBR, as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Stereo audio: AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps; YouTube lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo.
- SDR color: Rec. 709.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations for the current settings and codec-specific tables before the event, since ingest guidance can change.
Match the stream to VPS capacity
Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice and scene complexity all affect encoding load. Start with the quality the VPS can handle continuously, not the highest setting OBS will let you select. Check the provider’s plan for CPU capacity, access to a needed hardware encoder, sustained outbound throughput, traffic caps and remote controls. These are plan-specific checks; there is no general VPS specification that guarantees smooth streaming.

Test the connection and stream before the event
- Run an upload speed test from the VPS, and choose a bitrate the connection can sustain rather than relying on a brief peak.
- Test representative content, including motion and audio similar to the real program. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems and interruptions.
- Start streaming to the YouTube event and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making it public.
- Confirm the watch page and sound from a viewer’s perspective, then monitor stream health during the event.
YouTube’s event-production tips suggest setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before an event. Those are preparation recommendations, not technical requirements. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Use video, music and other material you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast can be interrupted or restricted if YouTube detects content that violates its policies or copyright rules. Check the channel’s eligibility before the event and use YouTube’s Live Control Room to watch for warnings or restrictions. For a recurring program, make sure the rights cover repeated public streaming, not only an initial upload.

Troubleshooting common VPS-to-YouTube problems
