24/7 streaming

Can a YouTube Channel Run Two 24/7 Pre-Recorded Live Streams at Once?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at the same time. Two simultaneous pre-recorded streams fit within those limits if your channel is eligible, has available capacity, and your encoder or cloud service can send two separate feeds.

What YouTube’s limits mean for two simultaneous streams

YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance states: “There is a limit of 10 active streams allowed per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These limits are applied at the same time.” These are concurrent-stream limits, not a promise that any particular encoder can produce two continuous broadcasts.

  • Your channel can have no more than 10 active streams at once.
  • A single stream key can be used for no more than 3 active streams at once.
  • Two streams are within both limits, provided other active broadcasts have not already used the channel’s capacity and neither feed would exceed its key’s limit.

For two distinct programs, create or configure two separate YouTube live events and send a feed to each. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains that an encoder is configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Its simulstreaming guidance describes configuring an encoder for a live event and repeating the process for additional streams, within YouTube’s limits. It does not specify settings for every encoder or guarantee that a particular setup will sustain two 24/7 feeds.

Check eligibility before setting up either stream

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to start a live stream. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Confirm that the channel meets the current requirements in YouTube Studio before building a continuous setup.

Choose how to send both feeds

Local encoder and computer

You can use encoder software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube documents both categories, but whether one device or application can send two independent continuous feeds depends on its capabilities. Verify support for multiple simultaneous outputs, separate event configurations, and sustained operation before relying on a specific model or application.

A local setup also depends on the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection staying available. For two feeds, check that the encoder can manage both at once and that your home or studio connection has enough outbound capacity for their combined bitrates.

Cloud encoder or service

A cloud encoder keeps the sending workload off your local computer, but you still need to verify that the service supports two concurrent YouTube events and can run each continuously. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; that mention alone does not establish its current support for two concurrent feeds. Check the provider’s current specifications before choosing it.

Calculate the upload bandwidth for both streams together

YouTube’s streaming tips say total streaming bitrate should fit within available outbound bandwidth and recommend 20% headroom. For two streams, add their bitrates together; do not assess each feed as if it were the only upload.

For example, if the two encoder outputs are configured at 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps, their combined streaming bitrate is 10 Mbps. Applying YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom means the available, stable upload capacity should be at least 12.5 Mbps for those feeds, before allowing for other uploads or network use. Treat this as a planning calculation, not a guarantee: actual network capacity can fluctuate.

  • Use the configured output bitrate for each feed, then add the values.
  • Include any backup or redundant feed in the total if it also sends data over the same connection.
  • Leave room for other devices and uploads rather than planning right at the connection’s advertised maximum.
  • If you cannot sustain the aggregate bitrate, reduce the outputs or use a connection with more reliable outbound capacity.

Set up and verify two live events

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. Verify the channel, check for live-stream restrictions, and confirm that the channel’s active-stream capacity is available.
  2. Create two YouTube live events. Give each prerecorded program its own event and confirm which event corresponds to each feed.
  3. Configure the encoder or service twice. For each feed, enter the appropriate YouTube server URL and stream key in the relevant encoder configuration. Keep the event-to-key mapping clear so one program is not accidentally sent to the other event.
  4. Check concurrency and bandwidth. Ensure no stream key is already being used by more than its allowed number of active feeds, and confirm the combined bitrate fits the available upload with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  5. Start and inspect each feed. Confirm that both events receive the intended video and show a healthy incoming feed in YouTube Studio before leaving them unattended.
  6. Monitor the setup. Watch for encoder, connection, or event errors. Two streams multiply the number of feed paths that can fail, so make sure you can identify which feed needs attention.

Plan for archives and DVR separately from 24/7 uptime

A live broadcast staying active for a full day does not mean YouTube will save a complete 24-hour archive. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube’s DVR guidance also warns that rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

If you need a complete recording, retain the source video or make a separate recording plan rather than relying on a 24-hour live stream archive. Decide whether viewers need DVR rewind, since long-running streams may not provide it as expected.

Common problems and fixes

  • The second event will not start: Check the channel’s 10-stream limit and the relevant key’s 3-stream limit, counting any other active broadcasts.
  • The wrong video appears on an event: Recheck the event-to-stream-key mapping in both encoder configurations and confirm each prerecorded source is assigned to the intended feed.
  • Both feeds buffer or disconnect: Compare their combined output bitrate with stable outbound capacity, include other network traffic, and preserve the recommended headroom. Lower output bitrates if the connection cannot sustain the total.
  • One encoder cannot send both feeds: The platform limits do not confer multi-output capability on your software or hardware. Use a configuration or service that explicitly supports two simultaneous YouTube events, or run separate encoders.
  • The 24-hour archive is incomplete or DVR rewind is missing: This is consistent with YouTube’s caveats for streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a separate recording if a complete archive matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is an option for keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For two concurrent streams, check that your channel has room under YouTube’s limits and use a separate StreamNeo slot and event configuration for each feed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one stream key send two different videos to two events?

Only if your encoder or service supports configuring separate feeds appropriately; YouTube’s stream-key limit does not establish that capability.

Does YouTube guarantee that two 24/7 broadcasts will stay live?

No. The concurrency limits describe how many streams may be active, not the reliability of a particular encoder, network, or cloud service.
