To loop a prerecorded meditation video into a YouTube Live stream, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 before the input file, pace that file with -re, and send the encoded output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Then test the preview, audio, stream health and loop join before leaving it unattended.
What the FFmpeg loop does—and what it does not
-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It belongs before the matching -i. For a file being sent as live output, -re reads it at its native frame rate instead of letting FFmpeg consume it as quickly as possible; FFmpeg documents this as useful when output packet timing matters. These options loop and pace a file, but do not ensure an uninterrupted broadcast: the FFmpeg process, computer or server, network, YouTube ingest and account setup can all affect continuity. FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Use -re for the file input in this workflow. FFmpeg cautions against applying low read-rate settings to a true live capture input, where they can cause packet loss.
Prepare the video and YouTube stream
Check the source file
- Play the complete meditation video and confirm the picture, intended audio and duration. Check the beginning and end especially carefully: looping restarts from the beginning, so a hard cut, silence or mismatched ambience can be noticeable.
- Choose the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source and your upload capacity. Avoid choosing a higher target just because it is available; it can increase encoding work and required bandwidth without improving a lower-resolution source.
- If the file has no audio, decide whether silence fits the intended stream. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a rule requiring audible audio for this content.
Create or schedule the live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream as appropriate.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a secret: it authorizes the encoder to send the feed. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot or public repository. YouTube’s setup guidance explains encoder connection details at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room when your FFmpeg build and endpoint support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection. Do not substitute a guessed server address or reuse a key without confirming it is the intended stream.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so select the matching row in YouTube’s current live encoder settings rather than treating one number as universal.

For H.264, YouTube’s current Help table, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends 6 Mbps for 720p30, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations for those specific settings, not guarantees of picture quality or a stable connection.
With a GOP-size setting, set -g to approximately twice the frame rate for a two-second interval: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps. If the source/output frame rate is different, adjust accordingly. Confirm the actual frame rate and behavior of your chosen encoder; a GOP size is not a universal substitute for checking the resulting stream.

Example FFmpeg command for a 30 fps H.264 stream
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i meditation.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a universal prescription. The 6 Mbps video setting corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 720p30 recommendation (YouTube Help, accessed 2026-10-03); it is not the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. For that mode use the appropriate YouTube table value and update the encoder settings. The sample assumes a 30 fps output and uses -g 60 for an approximately two-second GOP. Replace the endpoint placeholder with the exact server URL and key from Live Control Room.
The command re-encodes video with libx264 and audio with AAC, then muxes the feed as FLV for RTMP-style ingest. Your FFmpeg build must include the selected encoder and support the protocol. If your file, frame rate, output resolution or YouTube configuration differs, adapt the settings and test rather than copying the line unchanged. Start, test and monitor the broadcast
- Before starting, check that the stream key is correct and private, the output settings match the chosen YouTube configuration, and the machine can remain on with a stable internet connection.
- Run the command and open the Live Control Room preview. Check that both video and audio arrive and that YouTube reports a healthy stream. Open the watch page to confirm what viewers will see.
- Test with content whose visual movement and audio resemble the actual meditation stream. A static image may not reveal the same encoding or network issues as a more active scene.
- Watch at least one loop boundary. Repetition does not itself create a seamless transition. A secondary FFmpeg technical guide notes that stream-copy looping assumes a source beginning on a keyframe and that audio/video length mismatch can contribute to pauses. Inspect the actual file and preview; re-encoding is not guaranteed to fix every seam.
- Only leave the stream running after the test succeeds. If using a backup encoder, YouTube recommends testing failover as part of stream preparation.
Budget for the full outgoing stream bitrate and other household or office traffic. YouTube’s networking tips recommend 20% upload headroom beyond the primary plus backup bitrate. That figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee against network interruptions. See YouTube streaming tips.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg and YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg sends the file too quickly or output timing is wrong | The file is not being paced, or -re is attached to the wrong input. |
Put -re before the file’s -i. Use it for the file input, not a true live capture input. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Wrong server URL or key, unsupported protocol, unavailable encoder, or insufficient upload bandwidth. | Copy the exact URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, check FFmpeg protocol support and encoder output, then verify available upload capacity. |
| RTMPS SSL or connection timeout error | Protocol/server mismatch or endpoint connection issue. | Check that both the selected protocol and server use the RTMPS values shown by YouTube. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance notes port 443 as a possible URL setting when needed: streaming tips. |
| Stream disconnects or reports poor health | Upload bandwidth is too low or fluctuating, other traffic is competing, or the host/network is interrupted. | Check upload speed during realistic network use, reduce the selected output demands if needed, and leave headroom. A loop option cannot repair a dropped connection. |
| Visible pause, click or abrupt change at the repeat point | The file’s start/end content, keyframe structure or audio/video lengths do not join cleanly. | Inspect the source at the seam and preview another full cycle. The loop repeats the source; it does not make the transition seamless. |
| FFmpeg exits unexpectedly | The process or host stopped, an output limit or error was reached, or the connection failed. | Read FFmpeg’s final error output, check the host and connection, then restart only after confirming the correct stream and key. Infinite input looping does not keep a stopped process alive. |
Copyright, reused content and monetization
Using FFmpeg does not grant rights to the meditation footage, music, nature sounds, artwork or other material in the stream. Use content you created or are licensed to use, and check that the license covers the intended live broadcast and any monetization. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. The official guidance cited here does not establish that looping meditation footage is automatically compliant, monetizable or prohibited. Creators in the YouTube Partner Program may monetize live streams, but eligibility and content suitability depend on current program rules. Review YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream guidance and current policy terms before broadcasting.

Also distinguish a technically valid stream from an eligible channel or video: a successful encoder connection does not guarantee monetization. Reused or repetitive material can raise separate review questions, so do not assume that a long-running loop qualifies simply because it is live.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long will YouTube archive the stream?
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast longer than that will be archived in full; preserve a local copy if you need a dependable recording. See YouTube’s encoder setup page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I close the terminal after starting FFmpeg?
No. The FFmpeg process must keep running on its host to keep sending the feed; closing the terminal may end the process unless you deliberately run it in a persistent session or service.
Can I use the same command for a different video frame rate?
Adjust the GOP setting and bitrate to match the output frame rate and resolution, then test the resulting stream against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
